22. Trust Your Gut

Where’d the music go? I thought as silence filled my dreams.

“Look at these. She was either really inspired or just really bored.” Zayn.

“Delilah, she remembers our Mew stage.” Jane. Uh oh.

“Who could forget that.” I heard her sigh. That was a really weird stage we went through. I could probably still quote everything in my sleep, but I wasn’t going to do it now. I was way too interested in their conversations.

“She really is turning into Harry.” Louis said from somewhere.

“Why do you keep saying that?” Liam asked.

“Obvious reasons. She tells us to shut up like Harry, the outfit she bought after the whole Taylor thing. She even cuddles her pillow.” He pointed out.

“Shut up, Louis. She’s her own person.” Niall said.

“We should probably wake her. She’s free to go, seeing as the paperwork is finished.” Liam suggested. I felt a pair of soft lips against my forehead, nose, cheeks and finally my lips.

“I know you’re awake, Mel.” he whispered into my ear.

“I figured.” I sighed, stretching like a cat that just woke up from thousands of years of sleeping.

“She even stretches like a Mew. Just don’t let your cat ears pop out.” Jane said revering to the show.

“I won’t.” I yawned. I still wasn’t fully awake yet.

“That thing looks even worse than it did yesterday.” Delilah said pointing to the hickey.

“Everything gets worse before it gets better.” I said standing up.

“Wow, look who got smart over night.” Jane smirked.

“Its true.” I said grabbing my clothes and heading into the bathroom. I quickly pulled on some black leggings and a neon pink jumper. I brushed my hair and tied it into a high ponytail.

“Lets go home.” I said when I came out to find my bag packed and on my bed. Harry came over to me and took my hand as we walked out of the door to the truck. I felt his hands on my waist, but I stopped him.

“I can get on by myself.” I said getting on to prove a point. I sat in my usual spot and was joined by Harry and Louis.

“Mel, we’re going to that old barn outside of town tonight. Jason just texted me. He said there’s some party going on there and everyone’s invited. You up for it?” Delilah asked.

“You and Jason still text?” I asked cocking an eyebrow at her.

“We’re still friends, Mel. You didn’t answer my question.” She said looking at the floor.

“Yeah, I’m game.” I sighed.

“Okay, it starts around 7.” She said climbing in the drivers seat.

“Knowing this town, everyone is going to be there. Including Taylor and probably Nick too.” I sighed again. I’ve been doing that a lot lately.

“I told you they’re not worth it.” Harry said taking my hand in his.

“I know, but I can’t help it.” I said looking into those eyes.

“We’ll go, have a great time and come back without you having any drama with them.” Harry assured me, but I had a feeling there was bound to be drama with them anyway. I nodded and closed my eyes, letting the wind sooth my ears.

We stopped a few minutes later and my cousins and I ran to our rooms. Okay, maybe I hobbled. My ankle wasn’t that bad anymore, but I still couldn’t run. I had no idea what I was going to wear.

“Decided yet?” I heard Delilah ask sitting on my bed.

“No. I’m stuck.” I said rummaging through my clothes. “You?”

“Yeah. Jane and I already have our clothes ready.” She said. “JANE! GET IN HERE!”

“Where’s the fire?!” she asked running in my room.

“Mel can’t decide on what to wear.” She said grinning. Uh oh. That’s not a good thing.

“Oh, we can help with that.” She said pulling a few bags from behind my door.

“How did I not notice those?” I asked looking at the bags.

“Maybe because I’m a sneaky mastermind.” She stated.

“Give her the dress first.” Delilah said from my bed.

“Yeah, yeah.” She pulled out a short black dress and threw in to me.

“Shut the door.” I sighed as I started to pull off my clothes.

“Turn the lights off, I wanna be with you!” they broke out singing.

“What are you doing?” I asked slipping into the dress.

“You just quoted one of their songs without even knowing it.” They laughed.

“Ugh.” I rolled my eyes. “Could you zip me up?” I asked walking over to a laughing Delilah.

“There you go.” She said still giggling.

“Holy VMA’s this is short.” I said looking into the mirror. It came to just above mid-thigh and it was extremely tight fitting.

“Duh. You have to look good for your new boyfriend.” Jane stated.

“How’d you know?” I asked shocked.

“We heard Liam telling the boys when we came back from town the other night.” Jane shrugged.

“Oh.”

“Yeah, now put these on.” Delilah said pointing to a bag.

“I swear, if that is a pair of heels, I’m going to kill you both.” I said stalking over to the bags.

“You love us, really.” Jane said rolling her eyes.

“HOLY SHIT!” I said pulling out a pair of black leather boots. They had laces coming up the back and came up to my knees. Lucky for them, they didn’t have heels. “You do know these are Plum freaking boots?!” I shouted looking at the shoes in shock.

“We know.” They said smiling.

“Now put them on already.” Jane whined. I quickly slipped them on and I was in love.

“I told you it looked great.” Delilah said looking at Jane.

“No you said the boots looked great. I was the one who chose the dress.” She said.

“You two get dressed and then we’ll do hair and make up.” I said ushering them out of the room. It was only 4 pm. What were we going to do for three hours? Oh they probably have something in mind.

I walked back to the mirror and examined the image in front of me. I could see the belly ring through the material. That wont do. I pulled the dress up and quickly took it of. That looked much better. I went over to the desk and took the earrings out of the box I kept them in. Everything was in place. It looked good. I was a bit uncomfortable with the length, but I had no choice.

“We’re ready!” the girls screamed as they ran into the room. They were dressed in the same type of dresses I was in. Jane had a sparkly purple one and Delilah had a silver one.

“Shhhh. Who’s first?” I asked sitting down on the bed with a travel sized make up kit in front of me.

“Me!” Delilah exclaimed. We went for a smokey-eyed look. I mean, we weren’t sluts or anything like that. We kept it plain and simple.

Almost an hour later, they were busy with my hair.

“So, where did you get the earrings?” Delilah asked.

“Harry gave them to me on the third night I was there. I was a little mad at him, because he left me alone after a sixth sense experience after he said he wouldn’t. I was ignoring him.” I said a little ashamed.

“The sixth sense thing is back?” Jane asked.

“Yeah. I don’t know why though.” I said.

“Has it gone to the extreme yet?” Delilah asked.

“Not really. Almost suffocated me, but that’s it so far.”

“Done!” Jane said turning me to the mirror.

“How did you do this?” I asked looking at my hair. It was in intricate little braids. I looked like someone out of the medieval ages or one of the Lord of the Rings movies.

“Milly showed me how.” Jane shrugged.

“I watched the Lord of the Rings Appendixes.” Delilah said.

“This is awesome!” I said going back to the seat.

Everybody was ready two hours later with some or other medieval hairstyle.

“We should get going. The party already started a few minutes ago.” Jane said opening the door.

“Yeah. Do you think Nick’s going to be there?” I asked looking at my boots.

“Oh not this again!” Jane sighed.

“He might be, but forget about that prick.” Delilah said walking down the stairs.

“Who are you talking about?” Harry said from the living room.

“No one!” We shouted in unison .

“Cousin thing.” Niall repeated the words we’ve heard so many times and then they burst out laughing.

“You guys ready to go?” Jane asked.

“Yeah.” They chorused.

“You sit up front.” Liam said to me.

“I’m fine in the back.” I protested.

“Not in that dress and it looks like that hair took a while to do.” He said walking next to me.

“Fine.” I huffed.

“You look beautiful, by the way.” He smiled at me.

“Thanks Liam.” I said as we came to the truck. I hopped in with Jane and Delilah and the boys in the back. Harry was giving me a puppy dog look, but I didn’t glance at him long enough to crack.

“You just got the puppy dog face.” Jane said nudging me in the side.

“I know.” I nodded

“He’s going to pull the cupcake face soon.” She laughed.

“The what?” I asked confused looking in the rear view mirror.

“Wait for it…” she said and sure enough he did pull it. He brought his hands under his chin and cocked his head to the side.

“There it is!” she laughed.

I looked away trying to contain the giggles, but failed.

“Lets turn the radio on.” Delilah suggested.

“Yeah. Pre-party tunes!” Jane yelled and turned it on. We were dancing and singing along to E.T. by Katy Perry. I was doing some weird hand gestures that I learned when I was still taking lessons and Jane was going wild.

“We’re not even at the party yet and you’re already acting drunk.” Delilah laughed.

“How much longer?” I screamed over the music.

“Five minutes.” She yelled back. We were laughing at Jane’s ridiculous dancing when we pulled up to the barn.

“Come on, Jane. You can continue your drunk dancing inside.” I laughed almost falling out of the truck, because I was laughing so hard.

“Steady there.” I heard someone say as I was stumbling out of the truck. I looked up and stared into those familiar green eyes I knew so well.

“Thanks.”

“No problem.” Harry chuckled and gave me a quick kiss. “You look stunning, Mel.”

“Come on, lovebirds! We’ve got a party to go to!” Jane yelled from the door.

“Coming, mother!” I yelled back. I felt him entwine our fingers and then we walked off into the party.

The place was packed with people. Some were dancing, some were making out in corners and some were just getting wasted. Nothing new there. Delilah and Jane were already dancing and the boys were standing with me. They looked a bit unsure of what to do.

“What are you doing standing around for? Go on. Have fun!” I yelled over the music. Jane came over and dragged Niall to the dance floor. Delilah did the same except with Liam. Louis was off to somewhere I couldn’t see and Harry went to get a drink. Zayn was dragged off by some random girl. I was left all alone. I didn’t mind though. I was never really the social type, Taylor was right about that. I was a wallflower and I wasn’t ashamed of it.

I was enjoying the music when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned and found Nick standing behind me.

“Would you like to dance with me?” he asked over the music. I couldn’t, I was with Harry. But he was off to get a drink.

“Yeah, sure.” I said as he took my hand and lead me to the dance floor. We actually danced, not that stupid grinding people did to get their sexual tension relieved. I never understood that. A slow song came on and I was about to walk away when he grabbed my hand.

“One slow dance? Please?” he asked.

“I-I can’t.” I stuttered.

“Its just a dance, Mel.” he pleaded.

“Okay, but just this once.” I said putting my arms around his neck. We started our dance. The song was halfway through, when I felt his hands slip to my bum.

“Nick, what do you think you’re doing?” I asked removing my hands from his neck.

“What do you mean?” he asked smirking.

“You know exactly what I mean.” I said trying to push him away, but his grip was too strong.

“Come on, Mel. I know you have feelings for me.” he whispered in my ear.

“No, I had. Past tense. I’m with Harry now.” I said still fighting his grip. The next thing I knew he crashed his lips to mine in a rough, alcohol driven kiss. I struggled, but to no prevail. It was useless. I didn’t give in though. It didn’t feel right. It wasn’t right in the first place. He finally let me go and I was shocked. I heard the satisfying sound my hand made when it made contact with his cheek. I walked away from the party and to the truck, lying down on top of the back. I didn’t want to ruin everybody’s fun by asking to go home, I’ll just lay here and wait for them to finish.

“Melody! Are you out here?” Jane asked coming over to the truck.

“Yes.” I groaned sitting up.

“I saw what happened with Nick. The nerve of that guy.” She was mad. I knew it, because she started ranting in Afrikaans again.

“Did any one else see?” I asked meaning Harry in particular.

“No, just me.” she said.

“Good.” I said as I was going to lay back down, but she caught my hand.

“I’m not leaving you here. Come on, lets go dance and forget about that little prick.” She said pulling me off the truck and walking me back to the party.

“Good thing you’re not crying.” She stated.

“If I was, I wouldn’t be too worried about the make up. Its water proof. I don’t use anything else.” I said.

“Good to know. Now I can go cry on Niall’s shirt without ruining it!” she squealed. We laughed as she dragged me to the dance floor. I Love It by Icona Pop was blasting through the speakers. Kind of fitting my mood perfectly. We were singing and dancing around when Delilah joined us. We were screaming the lyrics to each other, laughing all the way. Completely forgetting what happened with Nick and I haven’t seen Taylor yet, so all was well in Melody Land.

“Lets grab a drink!” Delilah yelled.

“You know I’m not old enough!” I yelled back over the music.

“They don’t ask your ID, Mel. It’s a party!” she gestured.

“Fine!” I gave in. We walked to the bar and got a shot of tequila for some godforsaken reason.

“On three. One… two… three!” we took our shots and boy, was it vile. It burned its way down my throat and even though there’s usually a whole ritual to follow, we only got shots.

“Ew! That’s just vile!” Jane said voicing my thoughts.

“You’ll get used to it.” Delilah replied.

“You know you’re the designated driver, right?” I pointed out.

“Yeah, but my limit is a lot higher than other peoples’.” She said pointing around to the drunk bodies around the place.

“Yeah, I remember.” I nodded. She signalled to the guy behind the bar and he gave us three beers. I took the cold bottle and went back to the place I was standing at earlier. I was watching and laughing at all the drunk people when I felt something cool run down my back.

“What the hell?!” I shrieked trying to get an ice cube out of the top of my dress.

“I see someone finally discovered beer.” I heard her say to the two girls that never seem to leave her side.

“Taylor…” I hissed getting the ice out.

“That’s my name don’t wear it out.” she said smugly.

“You wish.” I said flicking the ice at her.

“Where’s that little boyfriend of yours?” she asked stepping over the ice that landed next to her on the floor.

“Around.” I said simply.

“You shouldn’t let him go around here alone. He might get stolen.” She said turning on her heel and walking away.

“Yeah right!” I screamed after her. She was getting under my skin and she knew it. I spotted Niall and Jane standing in a corner talking like everything was fine. Well, it was for them.

“Have you seen Harry?” I asked as I stepped over to them.

“Nope.” Jane said popping the ‘p’.

“Last I saw, he was with Louis at the bar.” Niall said.

“Okay, thanks guys.” I said turning away and walking over to Delilah and Liam, who were standing against a wall, also talking.

“Hey, Mel.” Delilah greeted.

“Hi. Have you seen Harry?” I asked.

“No, sorry.” She answered.

“Liam, have you?” I asked. He fixed his eyes past my head and then to Delilah. “What’s wrong?”

“Uhm, Mel. I don’t know how to put this.” Delilah said unsure.

“Just spit it out.” I said getting impatient.

“Uhm, you might want to turn around.” She said pointing to the space Liam stared at earlier.

“What? Why…” I started but couldn’t finish. “I-I…” what I was seeing was completely terrifying me. There Harry was, standing against the opposite wall making out with Taylor! Of all people!

“Mel, I’m sorry.” Liam said from behind me.

“I need some air.” I said storming out of the door and started walking down the dirt road back to the farm. I couldn’t stay here anymore. This family was going to be the end of me.

I felt the tears start to roll down my cheeks and I let them fall to the ground. I don’t know how long I was walking for, but my feet were a little numb from the new shoes. I slipped them off and carried them the rest of the way. The dirt between my toes was almost comforting. The tears were still streaming, but the funny thing is I didn’t once start to sob or shake. It was only tears. Good thing the make up was waterproof. I saw the house not too far away. The lights were left on inside. I ran the rest of the way and hurried inside.

I stripped out of the dress as soon as I got in my room and chucked it to the corner followed by the shoes and the earrings. I didn’t bother to put them back in the box. I stood in front of the mirror, wondering if I wanted to put the belly ring back or not. I decided not, instead I took the ruined one that was still laying here and put that one in. My phone beeped from my bed.

From: Jane

Where’d you go?

To: Jane

I walked home. Don’t worry I’m safe and sound at home.

I won’t wait up, just don’t wake me when you get here..

From: Jane

Holy VMA’s! You walked home?! That’s so far from here.

Don’t worry we’ll be home soon. I’ll make sure no one wakes you.

Sleep tight now.

To: Jane

Thanks, I really do owe you one.

With that said I climbed into my bed, but I couldn’t sleep. That horrid scene kept replaying in my mind. How could he do something like this to me? Maybe she kissed him, you ever think of that?, that little voice inside my head stated. I know that could be a possibility, but I mean he didn’t do anything to push her away. But you did kiss Nick.

“Shut up inner voice!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. I actually pushed Nick away. That’s when I remembered something important, I haven’t taken my pills yet. They were bound to get me to sleep. I got up and walked to the kitchen, where my pills were. I quickly swallowed the two pills and went to the tv. I might have been upset, but I could really use something to cheer me up. I switched to an Afrikaans music channel and closed my eyes, pulling a blanket up to my chin. I was asleep within minutes.
