6. Sorry Won't Cut It

I was at the London Eye taking a few pictures. I sat under a tree and looked over the water in front of me. I was so lost in thought, that I didn’t notice someone sitting down next to me. I turned and saw a boy who looked around my age. He had dirty blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. It fit him perfectly, but he didn’t awaken the butterflies like he expected to.

“Hi.” He said.

“Hey.” I said barely above a whisper.

“Are you alright? You look kind of down.” He said looking at my eyes.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m Melody.” I said extending my hand with the bracelet on it for him to shake.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Jake.” He said shaking my hand. “Beautiful bracelet.”

“Thank you.” I said placing my hands in my lap.

“I haven’t seen you around before, are you new around here?” he asked.

“Actually I moved here like two days ago.”

“Cool. What school are you going to?” he asked.

“I graduated already.” I answered not looking up.

“What? How old are you?” he asked shocked.

“15. Skipped a few grades.” After I said that we started talking about a bunch of random stuff. I snapped a few shots of him. He was really handsome, but I’m not looking for heartbreak. We exchanged numbers and I offered to help him with school work if he needed it. I started my walk back to my flat, but I found a Starbucks and of course I had to stop. I went inside and ordered an iced coffee. The way they wrote my name was really cute. There was a music note after my name. I started walking again and took a few pictures of the sunset. I got to my front door and searched for my keys. I found them almost 10 minutes later. I really need to sort this bag out sometime. I went straight to the couch that had my pillow, blanket and laptop on it. It wasn’t even 7 yet, but at least I’m home. About 20 minutes later, there was a knock at my door.

“Come in! It’s open!” I yelled from the couch.

“Hey, what are you doing?” Lou asked as she plopped down next to me.

“Just looking at the photos I took today.” I said as I was passing the photos of Jake.

“Wait, stop at that one. Who’s that?” she asked pointing to Jake.

“Jake. I was at the Eye, sitting under a tree and he just came up to me. We started talking, took a few photos, exchanged numbers and then I left.” I stated.

“He’s cute.” She pointed out.

“Yeah, but I don’t want any heartbreaking right now.”

“You know, Harry is really sorry. What happened between you two?” she asked out of the blue.

“Lou, what I’m about to tell you, you can never repeat to any one ever.” I said completely serious. She nodded and I carried on, “I have a sixth sense.”

“As in you see dead people?” she asked her eyes wide.

“Not exactly. I can’t see them, but I can feel their presence. Yesterday, when we were supposed to be getting my supplies, I was in the kitchen eating, when all of a sudden the room got cold. The bowl exploded,” I said showing her the cuts on my arm. “I tried to get out of the kitchen, but it pinned me to the wall and almost suffocated me. I’m guessing the boys found me. Harry stayed behind with me seeing as I was out cold. I woke up with him next to me. I started bawling, because I remembered things about my parents and he held me for a while. He promised he wouldn’t leave me and that he wouldn’t hurt me, but when we came downstairs he just left without even telling me, breaking his promise.” I sighed as I put the laptop on the coffee table still open. The screensaver popped up and it was the photos from that first day.

“I don’t know what to say, Melody. Harry never breaks his promises.” She said, looking from me to the screen when the mysterious photos popped up. “Do you know who took those?” she asked.

“No, I actually wanted to ask you about them.” I stated.

“Guess.” She smiled at me.

“Harry…” I sighed, “but why would he take photos of me?”

“Can’t you see it? He likes you and not in the little sister kind of way I know you think he does.” She sighed, sounding frustrated.

“But, I’m still a child if you ask me. He doesn’t even know how old I am. He was asleep when I told the other guys and I’m not really up for talking to him at the moment.” I said laying down on the couch with a heavy sigh.

“I know, but you are so much more grown up than any other 15 year old I’ve ever met. Hey, what do you have planned for your birthday?” she asked out of the blue.

“Uhm, I don’t know. I don’t really know any one other than you and the boys and I’m not really up for a massive sweet 16 party.” I said.

“You know, a sweet 16 usually represented a girl who turned 16 and has never been kissed, before that show was created.” She stated laying down on the opposite couch.

“I know and that’s why I used that term.” I said looking away from her.

“You’re telling me you’ve never been kissed by a boy?!” she almost screamed.

“Yes, I have never  been kissed.” I felt the blush on my cheeks.

“Well, we’ll have to do something about that, now won’t we.” She said laying back down.

“Do you want to watch a movie or something?” I asked.

“Movie night!” she yelled and picked up her phone.

“Lou, what are you doing?” I looked at her sceptically.

“Inviting the boys over.” She shrugged.

“Oh, whoop-dee-doo…” I said sarcastically. “I’ll get started on the snacks then.” I walked to the kitchen.

“Wait, I’ll help you.” She said putting her phone down and turning the TV on. “Some music to help the time go by.”

The music blasted through the house as we made  popcorn. I made my special fudge that took only 5 minutes and I must say it was delicious.

“How did you make fudge in 5 minutes?” Lou asked surprised.

“Eh, I don’t know. Special touch, I guess? Want to make chocolate clusters in 5 minutes?” I asked.

“Oh my god, yes!” I laughed at her and started mixing everything. Isn’t She Lovely came on and I started singing along. The song was still playing when I heard the volume go down. I looked at Lou and she looked at me.

“What the hell?” I asked her, but she just shrugged. “Lets get the treats to the living room.” I said and picked up the fudge and clusters. We got to the living room to find that no one was there. We shared a look again and placed everything on the coffee table.

“Where’s my laptop? It was just there?” I asked moving over to the side of the room with my back to the wall.

“And my phone is gone too.” Lou said. The lights flickered and went down. The room got cold again.

“Lou… remember what I told you about earlier?” I asked as fear overcame me.

“”Yeah…” she said trailing off.

“The room is cold and the diamonds are glowing. They’ve never done that before.” I said on the verge of breaking down.

“I don’t know what to do Melody. I’m scared.” She said just above a whisper. I didn’t notice I had my back pressed against the curtains until someone grabbed me from behind. I screamed and was thrown on the couch and the person landed on top of me. The lights flicked on and I saw Lou on the opposite couch with a very pleased looking Louis on top of her. I looked around to find the one person I didn’t want to see on top of me.

“I told you, you wouldn’t see our payback coming.” He smiled down at me. I was freaking out. That scared the living shit out of me. The tears were welling up in my eyes. I looked at Lou who was staring at me wide eyed, probably remembering what I told her about the kitchen incident. That was it. I shoved Harry to the floor and ran to my room. The tears were falling freely and I didn’t wipe them away.

“You idiots!” I heard Lou yelling at them, but I fell onto my bed, curled into a ball and just let all my fears come out in the form of tears. There was a knock on my door, but I just turned around facing the balcony windows again. The moon was almost full and was the only thing that provided light in my room at the moment. I heard the door open and seconds later I felt the bed sink. I didn’t know who came in and to be honest I didn’t want to know. I just wanted to be alone right now.

“Melody?” it was Lou.

“Mmmm?” I murmured, not looking at her.

“Are you alright?” she asked sounding concerned.

“A little rattled, but fine.” I answered truthfully. I couldn’t lie to her.

“Will you come down and watch some movies with us?” she asked.

“No horrors tonight, please, but I’ll be down in a sec.” I answered.

“Okay. Meet you downstairs.” She got up and left me there again. I wasn’t going to go down there this very instant, but the fudge was calling to me. Comfort food, I guess. I got up and took the end of my braid, which came to just above my waist, in my hands and playing with it while I walked down to the couch with my blanket on it. Everyone was already sitting down and the only place left was with Harry. Great. I sighed and received a sympathetic look from Lou. I sat down as far as possible from him and curled under my blanket. We were watching Love Actually. I’ve seen this so many times, I swear I could quote it in my sleep. It’s not my favourite, but the amount of times my grandparents watched it is sickening. I grabbed a piece of fudge and nibbled on it like a rabbit would a carrot. The movie wasn’t even halfway through yet when I felt my eyes begin to droop. I was comfortable in the position I was in. My back was to Harry, my legs pulled up next to me and my head resting on the back of the couch. I decided to let my hair out of its braid, making it wavy instead of the tight princess curls it usually had.

“You have extremely long hair, Melody. I bet it takes forever to style.” Ugh, why couldn’t he just shut up?

“That’s why I don’t style it.” I answered the boy who I still had my back to.

“IT SPEAKS!” Louis shouted from his place next to Zayn.

“Shut up Louis!” he yelled at him.

“Oh, whatever…” he mumbled.

After that it went quiet again and I couldn’t help it. I felt myself drift of into a restless sleep.

“Mum, turn up the radio!” I shouted from the backseat. “It’s that song from the other day!”

“Okay, darling.” She said turning it up. I was singing and dancing in my seat. We were on our way to the play and I was so excited.

“John! Watch out!” I heard my mum scream over the music. But it was too late. The truck hit us from the side and took my mum and dad away, leaving me in the back part of the car.

“Mum! Dad! NO! Help! Somebody! Help!” I was screaming bloody murder.

I woke up with a shock. I fell off the damn couch again.

“Melody?! Are you okay?” I looked up to see everyone staring at me wide eyed. Harry was kneeling next to me. I didn’t look at him. I was still kind of mad.

“Wh-what happened?” I asked completely confused.

“You were screaming and tossing on the couch and then you fell off.” Harry answered. So they heard it then. There was bound to be questions about this later.

“I’m going to bed. Feel free to stay and watch without the screaming child in the background.” I said yawning. They all chuckled except for Harry who was still kneeling on the floor, looking at me with sadness in his eyes. I started walking up the stairs when I saw something very unusual on the top step. It was a small black box with a note on top of it. I quickly picked it up and went to my room. I opened the box to find a pair of earrings, but not just any earrings. They were pink diamond hearts. They matched my necklace perfectly.

“What is this fuckery?” I said out loud. I opened the note and gasped.

I’m sorry. Please, talk to me. I know what I did was wrong, but I really am sorry.

I miss talking to you even though I’ve only known you for 2 days. I hope you like them. I immediately thought of you when I saw them and apparently they’ve got some spiritual qualities.

Harry xxx

I closed the note. Great, I’m actually starting to feel guilty. Who wouldn’t after getting these. I put the box on my dresser along with the note and pulled on some pyjamas. I went outside onto the balcony and just stared at the moon. Absorbing the calming effect it had. I was leaning on the railing when I heard the back door slamming. I looked down and saw a mop of curls disappearing through the trees. He looked mad. What happened? My door creaked open and I saw Louis coming through to the balcony.

“Hey. What happened to him?” I asked pointing to Harrys’ retreating figure.

“He’s upset, because you wont talk or even look at him.” He sighed leaning against the door frame.

“Should I go after him?” I asked concerned. I mean now the guilt is starting to crush me.

“Why? You didn’t do anything wrong. He was an arse. Lou told us what happened with you two.’ He said looking a bit confused. “But, why did you freak out so bad earlier with the prank?”

“She didn’t tell you everything.” I stated. “You have a right to know. Come on follow me.” I went into the study and grabbed my journal that I kept all my sixth sense experiences in. It was thick and heavy seeing as I couldn’t tell anyone about it without going to the nuthouse. We continued downstairs and I found everyone except Harry sitting on the couches staring at me.

“Guys, I have to tell you something.” I said standing in front of the TV getting ready to tell my story. I put the journal on the table and opened it to the first page. “I have a sixth sense and the entities aren’t happy about it. Yes, I can feel the presence of dead people. No, I can’t see them. That’s what happened in the kitchen. One pinned me to the wall trying to suffocate me. That’s why I freaked out earlier. I never told any one not even my parents knew about it. I told Lou before you guys came. It all started when I was about 10. On my eleventh birthday my parents gave me this,” I said pulling the necklace out from under my shirt. “I think in a way they protect me, because they stopped surfacing until yesterday when I wasn’t wearing it or the bracelet. Pink diamond is known for its spiritual qualities. I guess, without them even knowing it, they gave me something that protected me from all this…” I said trailing off.

“Not to sound nosy or anything, but why did you scream when you were asleep?” Louis asked.

“Uhm, about that. I told you I lived with my grandparents, but I never told you why. My parents died when I was 13. We were on our way to a play I was supposed to do the make up for and dance at the after party. A reckless truck driver took them away from me and just like that I was alone. That’s when I stuck my nose in my books instead of being all depressed and injure myself or try to commit suicide. The only scar I have that has been mistaken for a suicide attempt countless of times, is one I got chasing a rabbit around its cage and ended up falling with my arm on the metal bits that were sticking out.” I said as I lifted my arm showing them the vertical scar that would never fade away.

“Don’t cry, Melody.” I didn’t even notice the tears until Zayn pointed it out. He stood up and gave me a hug followed by everyone else ending in a massive group hug.

“Thanks for understanding.” I said when we sat down on the couches. I started flipping through my journal, looking for something useful.

“What is that?” Niall asked.

“Uhm, my journal I started when the entities started arriving.” I said without looking up from the pages.

“Found it!” I exclaimed.

“Found what exactly?” Liam asked cocking his head to the side.

“A recipe. I had an encounter like this one before. So I did some research. Poltergeists can only be banished in one way. White Sage and sweet grass should be burned in the area where the first encounter took place.” I read the first line. “I’ll go out and get that tomorrow. I know the perfect place to find it.”

“We should get Harry. He doesn’t know any of this.” Lou piped up.

“Yeah, not even my age.” I said barely above a whisper.

“I’ll call him.” Louis said disappearing into the foyer.

“Melody, I’m sorry about all of this. I promise things will get better.” Lou said.

“He’s already back at home.” Louis said coming back through the arch. “Come on guys. We better get going. Its late.” He was right. It was 2 am. They all said their goodbyes and left, including Lou. I went straight to bed not wanting to think about anything.
