16. Rude Awakenings And Spooked Horses

“MELODY!” I heard Jane and Delilah scream.

“What time is it?” I asked as I sat up and rubbed my eyes.

“10 am.” Jane said.

“Happy birthday!” They sang.

“Oh, thanks.” I said giving them a hug.

“Here you go.” Delilah said giving me a piece of paper with a seal on it.

“What’s this?” I asked as I opened it.

“It’s a certificate of adoption. You now own Gypsy.” Jane said.

“Wow! Thanks, guys!” I said giving them another hug. “Are the boys up yet?”

“No, I think they’re jetlagged. Why?” Delilah asked.

“I’m going for a ride.” I said getting up and dressed within five minutes.

“Yeah, sure.” They said sitting on the bed watching me get into my riding clothes. I quickly braided my hair and ran downstairs towards the barn, grabbing a carrot on my way out.

“Hey, there girl.” I said as I walked up to the horse. I fed her the carrot and gave her a quick brushing before saddling her up. Everything was set to go. I led her outside into the morning sun. I was greeted by the farmhand, Jason. He was probably around 20 and always really friendly.

“Need a boost?” he asked as I came outside.

“Oh, hi Jason. Yes, please.” I said as he held his hands out for me to step up on. I vaulted onto the horse with ease.

“How have you been, Melody?” he asked handing me the reins.

“Good. You?” I asked getting ready to go.

“I’ve been okay. I’ll see you around, okay?” he said going back to work.

“Yeah, sure. See you later.” I said as I began trotting around the practise field just to get comfortable again. She eased into a steady canter and we started the jumping course. I felt so free. Gypsy was a champion show jumper and I was her rider, before I moved. We were a match made in heaven is what my dad used to say. I decided to take her out of the practise field and into the land. We were running through the tall grass at full speed. I didn’t bother opening gates, we just jumped over them. This was the best birthday gift ever. I came across the creek that ran through the little clearing on the edge of our land and reined her in. I dismounted and let her graze for a good hour. It was so calming here. The sound of flowing water and the birds in the trees made it soothing. I used to come here just to think or when ever I was depressed or sad. After a while, I got back onto her back and just ran back to the house. Jumping every obstacle in our way. I came to the last gate and saw the boys on the porch with the girls. I was still a while away, but I could see Harry had seen me and wanted to open the gate, but Jane stopped him. He was giving her a confused look and she just pointed to me. The gate came and we jumped, landing perfectly and I slowed to a stop in front of the porch.

“Good afternoon, guys.” I said still sitting on Gypsy. They all stared at me with their jaws dropped to the floor except for my cousins. “What are you staring at?” I asked dismounting and almost falling on my bum like usual.

“You, the gate, what?” Harry rambled not making any sense again.

“That didn’t make any sense.” I laughed.

“What he means is how did you just do that?” Louis said as Harry was still staring.

“She’s been doing that since she was 8.” Delilah answered for me.

“Did you see the trophies in the display case?” Jane asked. They all nodded and she pointed to me. They stared at me again.

“Who wants to go for a swim?” I asked ignoring their stares.

“Us!” the girls screamed.

“You do know its winter, right?” Liam asked.

“Not normal winter.” I said mounting Gypsy again.

“Where are you going?” Harry asked.

“Going to unsaddle her.” I said walking her over to the opposite fence, easing her into a canter and jumping over the gate again. We trotted over to the barn and I did what I had to do.

“Good girl.” I said as I brushed her thoroughly.

“I could say the same about you.” Harry said from next to me. “That was amazing.”

“Thanks.” I said barely above a whisper.

“Happy birthday.” He whispered into my ear as he placed his hands on my waist. I turned and looked right into his eyes. I kissed him. Something I know took him by surprise, because he seemed to freeze for a second. I had no idea what I was doing, but it felt amazing. He swiped his tongue over my bottom lip asking for entrance. I hesitated, I didn’t know what to do. He didn’t seem to mind, because he kept going even though I didn’t let him in. He pulled me closer to him and deepened the kiss even more than it already was. My arms were around his neck, playing with his curls. His fingers grazed my hips, tracing random patterns on my bare skin causing goosebumps to form. He pulled away and rested his forehead to mine. We were breathing hard and the butterflies in my stomach was going crazy. He was smiling at me, his eyes were clear and shining. “We should get going.” He whispered.

“Yeah.” He took my hand in his and we started walking in comfortable silence. My heart was still racing from the kiss. We walked through the front door to find the boys on the couches in the living room.

“I told you so!” Louis shouted after spotting our entwined hands.

“MEL! GIRL EMERGENCY! UPSTAIRS NOW!” I heard Jane yell from her room. The boys started laughing as I pulled my hand from Harry and ran up the stairs.

“What happened? Are you on your period or something?” I asked out of breath. “Why are your walls covered with the faces sitting downstairs?” Her walls were covered from top to bottom with the boys.

“Eeew! Gross. No, and I’m a fan. We just needed something to get you up here.” Jane laughed looking disgusted about the period thing and was blushing about her walls.

“So… what’s going on between you and Harry?” Delilah asked wiggling her eyebrows.

“Mind out of the gutters, please. To be honest, I don’t know. I mean, we’ve kissed and cuddled, but I’m completely confused. He’s my first, if you know what I mean. We haven’t been on a date and he hasn’t asked me to be his girlfriend or anything like that.” I sighed as I fell down onto her bed. “Why are guys so difficult to understand?”

“I have no idea.” Delilah sighed laying down next to me.

“What happened to you and Jason?” I asked.

“We were just too different, I guess. I don’t know.” She answered.

“Jane? Anybody in your love life?” I asked looking at her.

“No.” she said falling on top of us.

“Ugh. Get off!” Delilah shrieked.

“We should change. We’re going swimming.” I said getting up and walking to my room.

“Oh yeah.” They said. I was busy digging through my clothes I kept here, but I couldn’t find my one piece anywhere.

“JANE! WHAT DID YOU DO WITH MY ONE PIECE?” I yelled from my room, finding a pink bikini as well as a black one.

“PUT THE PINK ONE ON. YOU’LL THANK ME LATER!” she yelled back laughing. Oh crap. I hate bikinis. I had no choice. I slipped into the damn pink one and pulled some denim shorts on. I didn’t bother putting a shirt on, seeing as it was going to get ruined anyway. I released my hair from its braid letting it flow around me. I walked out into the hall and found the girls in almost the same as me. Jane had a yellow bikini on and Delilah a cherry red one.

“Wow, this’ll show off our family curves in a good way.” Jane said striking a pose. I snapped a quick photo of her and her sister and walked downstairs.

“You guys ready to go?” Delilah said in front of me.

“Yeah.” They said not looking away from their phones.

“I’ll take Gypsy. You can take the truck.” I said walking out in front of them.

“Yeah, we’ll meet you there.” Jane said as I walked to the barn. I decided on going bareback. I didn’t want the hassle of saddling her up again. I mounted her and just as I came out of the barn I saw the truck take off. “Come on girl. We can catch them.” I said as I let her take off, jumping over the gate that went to the creek and catching up to them with ease.

“Hi, guys!” I shouted as I had her running at the same speed as the truck.

“What the hell?” I heard Louis shout.

“That must hurt!” Niall shouted.

“You go Mel!” Jane yelled.

“Meet you at the creek!” Delilah shouted and we took off, jumping over the last gate. I could hear the cheers from behind me, but I kept going. I was ducking under branches and jumping over obstacles again as I raced to the clearing from this morning. Gypsy slowed down at the sight of it and came to a stop a few feet away from the creek.

“Good girl.” I praised her and fed her the carrot I stuffed in my pocket before heading out. I heard the truck coming, but continued to feed her.

“Hey, where’s my carrot?” Louis asked pouting.

“I don’t think Gypsy would mind sharing hers.” I said holding up the half-eaten carrot.

“Now that I think about it, I didn’t want one any way.” He said looking at the carrot.

“Suit yourself.” I said giving her the last piece.

“That was amazing!” Niall said coming over with a few blankets and towels.

“You could say that again!” Zayn said carrying a basket and a cooler.

“It wasn’t that impressive.” I said patting Gypsy’s neck as she nuzzled her head into my hand.

“What are you talking about? That was brilliant.” Liam said joining us.

“Thanks, I guess. Where’s Harry?” I asked looking around.

“Under here. Help!” I heard a muffled cry coming from under the blankets, towels and everything else.

“Guys! Why did you burry him alive?” I asked getting it off him.

“He’s the youngest. Its only fair.” Louis pointed out. “And he had ants in his pants again.” He said as the rest of the boys started laughing. The girls gave me questioning looks which I returned with a you-don’t-want-to-know look.

“Shut up and thanks for saving me.” he said looking to me. His eyes widened in shock as he saw what I was wearing. I blushed and turned away looking at the creek. Every one was laying out the blankets and setting up. I walked to the edge of the water and dipped my foot in it. It was freezing, but I wasn’t going to tell them that. I enjoy swimming in the winter and I know my cousins did too. We formed a club called The Polar Bear Club. I was still standing there when I was pushed into the water. I surfaced and saw two boys grinning at me. I should have known Harry and Louis would do something like this.

“Girls! Code blue!” I yelled floating on my back as I saw them creep up on the two boys who were staring at me. The next thing I knew there were two splashes and then they surfaced. I laughed as Harry’s hair covered his entire face while Louis was looking shocked.

“How did we just get beat at our own game?” he asked looking to Harry who was struggling to get his hair out of his face.

“Maybe because we didn’t know what code blue was.” He stated still struggling.

“Need some help?” I asked as I swam over to him.

“Kind of.” He said and stopped struggling. I laughed, dunking him and pulling him forward.

“There you go.” I said still laughing as I swam back to my spot I was in earlier. Soon we were joined by everyone else except Zayn who couldn’t swim.

“Come on, Zayn. You’ll be able to stand. Its not deep.” I said walking over to prove a point.

“No, I’m fine here. Go have fun. I’ll keep Gypsy company.” He said as she came over to him nuzzling his cheek.

“She likes you.” I said giggling.

“I like her too.” He said laughing. Before I could swim back to my cousins I was pulled under the surface. When I resurfaced, there was no one near me. I looked around. Every one was busy doing their own thing except for Harry. He was no where in sight. I felt something graze my leg and I was pulled down again. I was in the deeper part of the creek. I opened my eyes and was met with two emeralds. He was grinning at me. I stared at him not knowing what to do. Next thing I knew we were kissing. Underwater. It felt weird, a good weird, but still weird. Wait, I just confused myself. I pulled away and swam off. I resurfaced near Delilah and Liam, scaring the living daylight out of them.

“Help me!” I screamed as I was pulled under again.

“Melody!” they shrieked. I wiggled free of his grip and swam back to Liam and Delilah. I was instantly picked up and held above water. I looked down and saw Liam and Niall holding me up.

“Thanks.” I said breathless.

“Your not safe yet.” They whispered. Just then Harry surfaced.

“Give her back. We were having fun.” He whined.

“Harry, no. She could get hurt.” Louis said serious for once.

“Since when are you so serious, Lou?” he asked.

“I don’t know. I have a bad feeling about this. All of us do.” He said sternly.

“Fine.” He sighed and swam off.

“You can put me down now.” I said.

“Oh, yeah. Sorry.” They said placing me down. I swam to the edge and got out immediately. I was done for today. I quickly wrapped my towel around me and sat under the tree. I watched as everyone had fun, having splash wars and chasing each other.

“You okay?” Zayn asked sitting down next to me.

“Yeah, I’m great.” I said full of joy.

“Yeah. Happy birthday by the way.” He said chuckling.

“Thanks.” I said leaning against the tree.

“Lets eat. I’m starving.” Niall said grabbing a towel.

“I second that. I haven’t eaten all day.” I said getting up and walking to the basket. I grabbed a sandwich and sat back down under the tree. Harry came and sat next to me.

“I’m sorry.” He said looking at his hands.

“For what?” I asked unsure.

“For dragging you around earlier.” He said still not looking at me.

“I was actually having fun.” I stated. He looked up at me with relief written across his face. The sun was busy setting as we all sat in silence, eating our sandwiches.

“Wow.” I heard him sigh at the sight of the purples and oranges colouring the sky.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” I said.

“Just like you.” He said looking at me. It reminded me of my grandfather the day I left. I looked out over the water again.

“We should get going. It’ll be dark soon.” Delilah said and started to fold the blankets as Jane did the towels. We were finished and had everything on the truck 5 minutes later.

“I’ll meet you back at the house.” I said as I mounted Gypsy.

“See you soon!” they called as the truck sped off. I clicked to her and she started in a slow canter. I didn’t push her. She was tired and so was I. We were already over the first gate when she stopped in her tracks.

“What is it, girl?” I asked in a whisper. She started nervously switching from foot to foot and the next thing I knew I was in the air and then laying on the cold hard ground. Everything hurt. One thing about Shire horses, they are abnormally tall. I took a hard hit and I knew it. Yes, I’ve fallen off horses a lot of times, but I think this time was a lot worse than the others. I tried to stand up, but the pain shooting up my leg sent me to the ground again.

“Ouch!” I yelled out in pain. I had a few other cuts and bruises, but my ankle was the worst. I pulled out my phone and called Jane.

“Hey. Where are you?” she asked sounding worried.

“Uhm, Gypsy got spooked and threw me off. I think I might have broken my ankle. She’ll probably be back at the house in about 5 minutes.” I said sitting up.

“I’m coming to get you.” She said.

“Please don’t tell the boys. Just you and Delilah should come. I’m not far from the first gate.” I said. I didn’t want the boys to find out about this.

“Okay we’ll be there soon.” She said hanging up. I stared at the darkening sky. What could have spooked the poor horse so badly? She never throws people. I was staring at the first star that appeared when I saw the headlights of the truck coming closer to me.

“Are you okay, Melody?” I heard Jane say as she came over to help me up.

“No, my ankle is killing me.” I said as we hobbled over to the truck.

“You look like crap.” Delilah said as she opened the door for us.

“Thank you.” I said sarcastically. “What did you tell the boys?”

“Oh they’re glued to the tv.” Jane said.

“Good.” I sighed relieved. Every bump in the road made me more aware of the rest of my body. Everything hurt. We stopped at the house and they helped me up the front stairs. “Can we go up the back stairs?” I asked realising there was no way of getting up the stairs without the boys seeing me.

“Yeah. Why do even have a back staircase again?” Delilah asked.

“For situations like this.” I pointed out.

“Oh yeah.” She said. We hobbled up the stairs with me wincing every so often. They supported me until we got to my room. I lied down on the bed and just stared at the ceiling.

“Do you need anything?” Jane asked.

“An ice pack and some pain killers would be nice.” I said.

“Sure. I’ll be right back.” She said as they disappeared through the door. I was left alone and I didn’t like it. My phone beeped signalling a new message.

From: Harry

Where are you?

To: Harry

In my room. Why?

No answer. This only meant one thing. He was coming upstairs. I didn’t want him to see me like this. I really did look like crap. I had cuts and bruises all over my body and stomach, seeing as I was in my bikini. I wanted to turn my back to the door, but the process hurt way too much. I turned the bedside lamp off and was left in darkness. The door creaked open.

“Mel, I got your pills and the ice pack.” I heard Jane say from the door.

“Thanks, come in, but leave the light off.” I said as I heard her come in. I switched the lamp back on and immediately downed the pain killers. She wrapped the ice pack around my ankle with a towel and secured it with a green shoelace. Her lucky shoelace as she called it.

“It doesn’t seem to be broken, just a very bad sprain.” She said standing up.

“Thanks, Jane. I owe you one.” I said.

“You owe me nothing. You brought One Direction to my  house! I couldn’t thank you enough for that.” She gushed.

“Then I guess we’re even.” I smiled at her. She nodded and disappeared again as I shut the light off. Leaving me in darkness with my thoughts. The curtains were still open and just like I predicted, it was a full moon. Maybe that’s why Gypsy freaked out. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs and towards my room. Great. The door opened and I saw the mop of curly hair.

“Why is it so dark in here?” he asked stepping inside and shutting the door.

“Because I’m a creature of the night.” I said in my best Dracula voice.

“Whatever you say Dracula.” He chuckled. He sat down next to me and even that made me wince. “Melody, are you okay?” he asked.

“Y-yes.” I said stuttering.

“No, you’re not. I could see you wincing and you’re a terrible lair.” He said reaching over and turning the light back on. I shut my eyes tight as the light flicked on. “What happened?” he asked sounding breathless. I opened my eyes and found him staring at my wounds.

“Gypsy got spooked and threw me off.” I said in a small voice. He kissed me. It wasn’t rushed. It was soft and sweet and filled with sadness almost. He trailed down my neck, stopping at my sweet spot, sucking and nibbling the sensitive area. He blew over it and it sent a shiver down my spine. He continued placing butterfly kisses down my body. Kissing each of the bruises almost in a way to heal them. The butterflies in my stomach was going bonkers again. He trailed back up and met my lips again for a brief moment.

“What did you do?” I whispered touching the sensitive area.

“You’re mine now.” He whispered, kissing me again.

“What?” I asked, not believing what I just heard.

“I’m asking you, in a way, to be my girlfriend, Melody.” He whispered against my ear.

I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t say anything to be honest. He frowned and pulled away from my neck. I just stared at him, unsure of what to do.

“Mel, say something.” He whispered.

“I don’t know what to say, Harry.” I spoke the words on my mind.

“Well, will you do me the honours of being my girlfriend?” he asked this time.

“Of course I will.” I whispered. He leaned back down and I felt him smile into my neck as he kissed the spot again. He was laying on top of me and it hurt. I know he didn’t mean to, but my muscles were tensing up.

“Uhm, Harry. As nice as this is, its kind of hurting me.” I said not trying to sound rude or anything. He immediately sat up again.

“What can I do to help?” he asked softly.

“I don’t know. My muscles are tensing, I can feel it.” I said as a cramp made its way to my leg.

“I know what could help for that.” He said disappearing into the bathroom. I heard the water start to run and then he was back. “Can you walk?” he asked from beside me.

“I can barely move.” I said softly.

“I’ll carry you. Don’t worry.” He said as he picked me up bridal style.

“Ow…” I groaned involuntarily.

“Sorry.” He said being careful.

“Its not your fault.” I said. We walked into the bathroom as I saw the bathtub filling with water. Steam was rising from it. He sat me down on the counter and closed the faucet. “I’m going to need help getting in there.” I said pointing to the tub. His eyes flicked over my ankle and back to my eyes.

“Uhm, yeah. Should I call your cousins to help you?” he asked looking nervous.

“I don’t want to bother them any further. Can you help? I mean, only if your comfortable doing it.” I said quietly.

“Its okay, I’ll help you.” He said looking relieved. Weird boy.

“We should probably get this of then.” I said gesturing to the ice pack. He moved in front of me and started to delicately untie the shoelace. He placed the melting ice in the sink and moved back to me. I stood holding onto the counter for support as he took my denim shorts off slowly. I was left in the little pink bikini. He looked at me and I stared at him. What now? I could just get in the tub with my bikini. But it was cutting into my muscles.

“Hand me a towel.” I said as an idea popped into my head. He gave me one and I kept it covering my front.

“Untie it.” I said turning back around. He did and I let the top fall to the floor. I wrapped the towel tight around me as I started to remove the bottom. I could only get it to my thighs without falling. He took over from there. I was left with goosebumps everywhere.

“What now?” he asked.

“Lift me in. I’ll keep the towel around me.” I said looking at him with sad eyes. I didn’t want to do this, but I had no choice.

“Okay.” He said picking me up again and placing me in the hot water. I felt my muscles start to relax .

“Thanks, Harry.” I sighed as I closed my eyes soaking in the heat.

“No problem. I should probably leave you now.” He said just standing there.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to.” I said opening my eyes again. He nodded and sat next to the tub on the floor. He took my wet hand in his and rubbed his thumb over a small bruise.

“Don’t scare me like that again, okay?” he said looking me in the eyes. I nodded.

“What a way to spend your 16th birthday.” I said staring at the ceiling.

“It could have been worse.” He whispered.

“Yeah, I know. At least I have you guys.” I said squeezing his hand.

“HARRY! WHERE DID YOU GO?” I heard Louis shout from downstairs.

“Sounds like you are missed down there.” I said laughing slightly.

“I’ll be right back.” He said getting up and walking out the door. I heard a few laughs coming from the living room, but I closed my eyes and tried to relax.

I was still in the tub 15 minutes later and the water was starting to get really cold. I mean, it was fine 5 minutes ago, but now its freezing. Harry still wasn’t back. I sat up and felt the ache in my back. I ignored it along with all the other protests my body was throwing at me. I stood up and got out of the bath almost falling over. I replaced the wet towel with a dry one and hobbled over to my room. I threw on some sweats and a cashmere jumper. I didn’t want to go downstairs so I went to my bed. I wasn’t tired, but I wasn’t up to face everyone. At least I could move a bit more. I turned the light off again and turned to face the window, staring at the stars and the moon again. I don’t know how long I was just laying there before there was a knock on my door. I didn’t bother answering. It was either Harry who finally remembered me or one of my cousins.

“Melody, you awake?” I heard Liam from outside the door.

“Yeah, come in.” I said still looking at the stars.

“Wow, its dark in here.” he said.

“You’ll get used to it.” I sighed.

“What’s wrong? It’s your birthday and you’re up here all alone in the dark.” He said.

“I wasn’t alone. Harry helped me to get in the tub, then Louis called him and he said he’d be right back, but that was a while ago. I had to struggle out of the tub and get dressed in the biggest amount of pain ever. Oh and he asked me to be his girlfriend.” I sighed as I turned to face him. “Ouch…” I groaned.

“I swear I’m going to kill him. What happened to you?” he asked looking mad.

“Gypsy got spooked and threw me off. I sprained my ankle very badly and I have a ton of bruises and cuts.” I said.

“Come on. I’ll help you get downstairs.” He said standing up and pulling me with him. He wrapped his arm around my waist to steady me and we started our slow descent down the stairs.

“Melody, what happened to you?” Niall asked concerned.

“Fell off the horse.” I said as Liam set me down on the open couch. “Sprained my ankle, got a few cuts and bruises.” I said lifting up my sweater enough for them to see.

“That looks like it hurts.” Zayn said.

“Yeah, it does.” I said. “Where’s Harry, Louis and my cousins?” I asked looking around.

“They went into town for something.” Niall said sitting back and pulling his phone out. So did Liam and Zayn. I pulled out my phone and decided do go on this twitter thing. I quickly followed the boys and tweeted my first ever tweet.

@Melody_Lexus:

Fell of a Shire horse not long ago. Sprained my ankleL

and got left in the tub by some one… what a way to spend your birthday.

I had a lot of followers and I didn’t even tweet anything. That probably had to do with the boys following me. I scrolled through some tweets and spotted one from Niall.

@NiallOfficial:

Just saw the aftermath of falling off a horse. Not pretty.

Hope you recover soon, Mel.x

Aaw, that’s sweet. I spotted one from Harry too.

@Harry_Styles:

Sorry.x

Sorry wasn’t going to fix this. He left me in the damn tub. I locked my phone and let it fall to the floor with a loud thud. The three boys looked at me and then at my phone on the floor.

“Someone saw something they didn’t like.” Zayn said.

“Mmmhmmm. A simple sorry won’t do.” I said more to myself than to them.

“Just don’t ignore him again.” Liam said knowing what I was talking about.

“I won’t, I promise.” I said shutting my eyes as I let sleep take over.

                                                ****************************

“What were you thinking?” I heard what sounded like Liam.

“We went to get here some medication.” I heard Louis say.

“He left her in the tub, without telling her after he asked her to be his girlfriend. Did he tell you that?” Liam asked.

“You did what?” Louis asked to Harry who hadn’t said anything.

“She could’ve hurt herself even more.” Niall spoke up.

“I know, I just, I-I… ugh.” Harry stumbled over his words.

“You just what Harry?” Zayn asked.

“I don’t know.” He sighed.

“I give up!” Louis shouted. “She’s the perfect girl, Harry, and your screwing it up.”

“I know.” He said softly. I wasn’t going to lay here and have them talk about me like this.

“Stop fighting.” I groaned trying to get up, but the pain in my muscles prevented that. “Ouch…” I muttered under my breath.

“Melody, are you okay?” Harry asked rushing over to me.

“No, as a matter of fact I’m not.” I said laying back down.

“What can I do?” he asked.

“Help me upstairs for one.” I said probably a bit harsh, but I was tired and sore. I just wanted to sleep. He picked me up and carried me to my room. He ever so gently placed me on the soft bed.

“I’m sorry I left you. Again.” He sighed.

“Sorry won’t cut it this time.” I sighed as I fell back asleep.
