23. More Apologies

“Guys, keep it quiet.” I heard Jane whisper from the front door.

“What is that music?” Liam asked.

“She must've been a little homesick. She almost never listens to that.” Delilah whispered.

“She fell asleep on the couch.” Zayn whispered. My eyes were wide open. How could they think I was asleep?

“Not asleep anymore.” Louis said standing in front of me. I got up and walked up the stairs, ignoring each and everyone of them. I probably looked like shit, because of the crying, but I climbed into my bed and fell asleep again. I really should thank the doctor for these pills.

                                    ************************************

“She doesn't want to talk to you, Harry.” I heard Jane from outside my door. I glanced at my phone. 10 am. Wow, I love those pills.

“Just, please let me apologize. I was drunk and that girl has some muscle on her. I didn’t know what I was doing until it happened.” He pleaded.

“That’s no excuse, Harry.” Jane sighed. “Just let her cool off for a while.”

“And how long would that be for?” he asked with a sigh.

“I’m not sure.” She said opening my door, revealing a depressed looking Harry. She stepped inside and closed the door just as quickly.

“I’m guessing you heard that.” She said sitting down on my bed.

“Yeah, I did.”

“I’m sorry, Mel.” she said.

“Why? You didn’t do anything.” I stated.

“Because you don’t have to go through this.”

“Its not your fault Taylor is a slut.” I sighed.

“I know.” She giggled. “Do you want to go down to Dave’s Karaoke place tonight?”

“They’re still in business?” I asked surprised.

“Yeah, tonight’s the weekly session.” She said excited.

“I’m up, what time do we leave?” I asked sitting up stretching.

“Uhm, we’ll leave at 5 so we can get a decent table.” She shrugged.

“Yeah, okay. I’m going for a ride to clear my thoughts.”

“Cool. I’ll be here, waiting.” She said climbing in my bed and curling into the warm cover. I pulled my riding clothes on and opened the door to find Harry just coming from his own.

“Melody,” he started, but I ignored him and walked down the stairs to the kitchen. I grabbed a carrot and walked out the front door. I walked down to the barn quickly and found Jason leading Gypsy to her stable.

“Morning Jason. I’ll take her from here.” I said smiling at him.

“Morning, Mel. Here you go.” He said handing me her lead.

“Thanks.” I said feeding her the carrot.

“I heard about your fall the other day. Are you okay to ride again?” he asked helping me saddle her up.

“Oh yeah, the bruises are still there, but my ankle is good enough to use again. Been trying to take it easy, you know?” I said.

“I heard about Nick last night too.” He sighed.

“Prick.” I muttered under my breath.

“You got that right.” He chuckled. “You left a nasty bruise on that cheek of his.”

“I’m glad.” I said smiling. I was just getting ready to mount when Harry showed up.

“Hi, I’m Jason.” He greeted.

“I’m Harry. Nice to meet you.” Harry said shaking hands with Jason. I pulled myself onto Gypsy and started clicking to her. She started walking and Jason stood aside.

“See you later, Jason. Thanks for the help.” I said looking at him.

“No problem, Mel. See you later.” he said as I started trotting around the practise field. I didn’t want to do anything except ride and practise a few skills.

When I came closer to the fence I saw Harry watching me. He was leaning casually against the fence, just following me around with his eyes. Our eyes met for only a second and I saw him tense up. Gypsy came to a triple gate jump and I wasn’t ready for it at all. We made it over the first two gates, but I failed at the third. I was laying on my side on the soft sand.

“Fucking hell.” I sighed as I got up and dusted myself off. Gypsy was standing next to me, sniffing my arm almost in a way to make sure that I was okay.

“I’m fine girl. Just a little case of the hot-seat.” I said brushing her nose. It was like touching velvet.

“Lets give it another try.” I said mounting her again. I started the course again and when we came to the triple gate, I focused extra hard. We made it over all three and I patted her neck with a huge smile on my face. I glanced at Harry again and he wasn’t leaning on the fence anymore. He was standing up straight, gripping at the railing.

“Come on, girl. Let’s get to the dressage area.” I said walking her to the opposite side and eased her back into a canter. We jumped the fence next to where Harry was standing and trotted to the dressage area.

“Need some music?” I heard Jason call from the booth.

“How’d you know?” I asked smiling at him.

“Saw you fall and then jump the gate again. Figured you’d come here.” he shrugged as a song started playing.

“Thanks.” I called back.

We still had that connection, Gypsy and me. I was really enjoying myself, until a snake decided to slither into the space in front of us. She stood up on her hind legs, but I was prepared for it this time. I quickly wrapped my arms around her neck and hung on for dear life. She went back down on all fours, but I didn’t let go. She started to run and when she finally stopped, we were back at the stables.

“Shhhh, its alright, girl. Just a little snake.” I cooed rubbing her neck. I dismounted and started calming her down. It didn’t take too long, I was rubbing her nose and brushing her neck and she was calm again. She started to nuzzle my cheek and I laughed. She always knew when I was upset. I unsaddled her and lead her to the place where we saw the snake again. Her ears twitched and she was nervous.

“Its gone, girl.” I whispered when she nudged me in the ribs.

“Melody are you okay?!” I heard Harry call. I turned around and saw him running towards me. I nodded. I still wasn’t going to speak to him, no matter how concerned he was. I felt Gypsy nudge me again and I turned back to her. I brushed her nose one more time and lead her back to the stable.

“Good girl.” I said taking the lead off and picking up the heavy saddle that I left on the ground. I walked into the tack room, hanging the brush and the lead on their places and storing the saddle on the stand. I knew he was following me, that much was obvious.

I sighed as I sat down to wash the dirty things laying around. I put my hand into the ice cold soapy water and found the sponge I was searching for. I got to work.

After about 5 minutes he sat down on a stool in front of me. He didn’t say anything, he just watched me work. I lied everything out to dry before I sat down on a hay stack, just staring at my filthy riding boots.

“Mel, I’m so sorry.” He whispered. Why couldn’t he just shut up?

“I’ve heard that before.” I sighed.

I got up and slowly walked to the house. I walked into the living room, where everyone was sitting except my cousins. I plopped onto the floor and just sat there staring at the carpet.

“Hi, Melody.” Liam was the first to speak.

“Hi.” I said in a soft voice.

“Do you know how long you’ve been out there for?” Louis asked sounding like a worried mother.

“No, mother.” I said rolling my eyes at him.

“Almost four hours.” He said looking at the clock on the wall.

“What?! How’d that happen?” I asked looking at the clock. He was right. It was 2 pm.

“Uhm, Mel? What’s that climbing onto your leg?” Niall asked pointing down.

“JANE! HELP!” I screamed as I saw a massive curly hair tarantula climbing higher up my leg.

“WHERE’S THE FIRE?” she yelled coming into the living room. It looked like she just woke up.

“Oh, Rosie! That’s where you went!” she exclaimed picking up the damn spider like it was a hamster.

“That’s Rosie?!” I squeaked.

“Yeah.” She said putting the spider back in its place.

“You never told me you had a tarantula, Jane!” I yelled getting off the floor as quick as possible.

“That’s because I know you are afraid of them.” She stated.

“Any other pets I should know about?” I asked pulling my legs under me as I sat down on the couch. She looked deep in thought.

“Not that I can think of now.” She stated.

“Good. What’s for lunch?” I asked.

“Delilah ordered pizza.” She said sitting next to me.

“They deliver here now?” I asked shocked. They never did that before.

“No, but the delivery boy has a crush on Delilah.” She smirked. “Free delivery.”

“That’s convenient.” I said.

“Have you seen Harry by any chance? He disappeared about the same time you went out riding.” Louis asked.

“Yeah, I have. He was stalking me. I fell off the horse again and she took off with me when we saw a snake. Last I saw him he was in the tack room.” I shrugged.

“Did you speak to him?” Liam asked.

“Barely.” I answered. And as if on cue, the front door opened and Harry came inside. He looked like he was crying. He looked up at me and just stared into my eyes. He looked sad. It was like seeing a puppy begging for food.

“Can I speak to you please?” he asked barely above a whisper. I nodded and got to my feet. I walked up the stairs and into my room, shutting the door as soon as he came inside.

“What do you want to talk about?” I sighed as I sat on the bed staring at the ceiling.

“I want to apologize about last night.” He said sitting down next to me.

“Why?” I asked.

“I know you saw me and Taylor.” He answered.

“Oh. That.” I could feel the tears build up in my eyes again.

“Mel, she pushed me up against that wall. She was drunk as a skunk. I promise you, it was all her.” He rushed.

“It seemed a whole lot different from my point of view.” I said remembering the scene clearly.

“Come on, Mel. I would never do that to you.” He said placing a hand on my thigh.

“While we’re on this subject, I have something to tell you too.” I said remembering Nick. A stray tear made its way from my eye.

“Don’t cry, love. I can’t stand to see you hurt.” He said taking my head in both of his hands and wiping away my tears with the pads of his thumbs.

“Last night, when you were with Louis, Nick asked me to dance with him.” I started.

“What happened?” he asked serious.

“He kissed me and I slapped him.” I whispered.

“He did what?” he asked uncertain.

“He, uhm, kissed me.” I struggled.

“And what did you do?” he asked.

“I slapped him and then stormed off.” I replied.

“So, we both made a mistake. I was a little tipsy too, I guess.” He said pulling me closer to him.

“Harry, you were plastered. Never mind tipsy.” I stated.

“And you’re telling me you were sober?” he asked.

“All I had was a tequila shot and a beer.” I said remembering that awful taste.

“You had tequila?!” he asked pulling back to stare at me.

“Yeeees.” I said stretching it out.

“Damn, I missed it.” He said.

“Missed what?” I asked confused.

“Your first shot.” He said pulling me back into place.

“Harry?” I asked after a few minutes of silence.

“Mmmm?” he murmured into my hair.

“Did you feel anything?” I asked hoping he would say no.

“What are you talking about?” he asked confused.

“The kiss with Taylor. Did you feel anything?” I asked again.

“No, Mel. I only have feelings for you. I promise.” He said. I let out a breath I didn’t even know I was holding and lied down on my bed.

“That’s the wrong one.” He said.

“What’s the wrong one?” I asked.

“You’re wearing the old belly ring again.” He said placing a hand on my stomach.

“Yeah, I know. I was kind of mad earlier, you know?” I said laying back down.

“Do you want me to put the other one back for you?” he asked.

“You can if you want to.” I shrugged.

“So does that mean I’m forgiven?” he asked hopefully.

“Yes, Harry. You’re forgiven.” I sighed looking at the ceiling.

“Where’s the other one?” he asked.

“Over there.” I said pointing to the mirror where I took it out. He stood up and walked over to the mirror and coming back after stopping for just a second. I felt the bed sink again and then soft feathery touches around my bellybutton.

“You won’t hurt me, Harry. Its been there for almost two years now.” I said when I felt him fumble with the old one. It didn’t take long before I felt the new one slide into place.

“There. Exactly where it should be.” He said and kissed my stomach. His curls brushed my skin and it sent a wave of goosebumps over my body.

“Th-thanks.” I stuttered as nerves got the better of me.

“No problem.” He smiled resting his head on my stomach.

“MEL! HARRY! PIZZA’S HERE!” Jane yelled from downstairs.

“Good. I haven’t eaten yet.” I said sitting up. Harry didn’t. His head was in my lap and he was still smiling at me.

“Kiss me first.” He said.

“Fine. If that’s what it’ll take to get you off.” I sighed and bent down to kiss him. It was a quick little peck, but it seemed to be enough for now. He stood up, pulling me with him and entwined our hands as we walked down the stairs.

“All is right in the world again.” I heard Louis whisper followed by an ‘ouch’. Zayn must’ve punched him.

“Wow, that’s a lot of pizza.” I said looking over at the ten boxes on the table.

“Duh, we’re a lot of people.” Delilah said.

“Lets eat.” Niall said rubbing his hands together.

A hour later, everyone was finished eating. I was stuffed to be honest.

“Thanks, Delilah.” I said standing up and heading for my room.

“Remember where going to Dave’s in a hour!” Jane yelled after me.

“I know!” I called back.

As soon as I got to my room I grabbed a pair of skinny jeans and a tie-dyed tank top. It was so colourful, the people on Pluto would be able to see me. I took a quick shower and got dressed. I was busy taming my hair when Harry walked in. Luckily, I was dressed.

“You ever heard of knocking?” I asked still struggling with my hair.

“No.” he said coming over to me. He placed his hands on my waist and leaned his head into the crook of my neck. He started sucking and nibbling on my pulse point again and I had to stop him.

“What’s wrong?” he asked confused.

“The last time you gave me a hickey, I went to the hospital. Everyone picked on me, even the damn doctor.” I said looking up at him.

“So?” he asked.

“SO, we’re going to a public place in less than 30 minutes and I’m not having people stare at my neck the whole time.” I said turning back to the mirror still struggling with my hair.

“Do you need some help with that?” he asked kissing my neck softly.

“Yeah.” I sighed giving up.

“Sit.” He motioned to the counter.

“What? You’re going to help me?” I asked in disbelief.

“Yeah. I’ve done it before.” He said lifting me onto the counter.

“Okay, but if this turns out looking bad, I’m blaming you.” I said as he positioned himself between my legs.

“It wont.” He said stealing a kiss.

“Fine.” I huffed and  he started working. Not even ten minutes later he was finished.

“Done.” He stated and let me of the counter.

“You surprise me more and more everyday.” I said as I looked at my hair. I had no idea that it would turn out like this. It had two little braids on the one side and flowed into a high ponytail with curls everywhere.

“Told you so.” He said crossing his arms over his chest. “What’s my reward?”

“Want do you want?” I asked picking up a few things before I realised the bad in what I had just said.

“I want to be able to give you a love bite whenever I please.” He smirked.

“I just explained it to you.” I sighed. “You can give me the damn thing when we get back.”

“But what’s the use then?” he asked pulling me closer to him and started kissing the same spot again.

“Mel! You ready to go?” Jane asked from the door.

“Yeah!” saved by Jane. Who would have thought? I wiggled out of Harry’s grip and ran to my room. I heard him groan and when I turned around he was stalking towards me. His eyes dark and a wicked smile on his lips.

“You little tease.” He said with each long stride he took towards me. I quickly grabbed my shoes in the corner and dodged his lunge towards me. I ran down the stairs and into the living room.

“Louis! Help!” I said as I hid behind Louis. I saw Harry coming down the stairs acting completely normal.

“What’s going on down here?” he asked looking at me.

“What the…?” I trailed off.

“Mel, are you feeling okay?” Louis asked looking at me concerned.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m fine.” I said confused and pulled on my shoes.

“Okay… lets get going.” Jane said grabbing her bag.

“Are you planning on singing this time?” Delilah asked.

“No!” I said shocked.

“But you’re really good.” She insisted.

“We’ll see. I don’t know yet.” I said giving up. Everyone was waiting for us. I climbed up on the back and sat far away from Harry, receiving a few worried glances from the rest of the boys. I didn’t know what he was playing at, but I can always play my own game.

The truck came to a stop in front of the building I remember spending so much time at. The neon sign was still the same. Everything was exactly the same.

“This place hasn’t changed a bit.” I said as I climbed off.

“I know, right?” Jane said.

“Hey, girls!” Someone called as we walked inside.

“Hey, Dave!” they called back. We got a good table and were just about settled into our seats when a new person went on the stage, already drunk as a skunk.

“This is going to be a funny night.” I said as the man started croaking out some lyrics.
