Dressing Up or Dressing Down? (One Direction/Lou Teasdale)

Melody is just an ordinary girl, or so she hopes. Her dream is to become a stylist, but after a traumatic experience it was locked in her inner closet. What will happen when she moves to London to be mentored by the famous Lou Teasdale, her idol? What will become of her when she meets the five lads everyone wants to meet? No one knows, except Fate.

2. Making My Way Downtown

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

“Ugh.” I moaned as I reached for the alarm clock I didn’t even bother to pack. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m leaving for London in an hour for 4 years. I practically jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. My iPod was lying there on the table, seeing as the docking station was packed. No time for music today, save the battery. I jumped in the shower realising I was still fully clothed. Luckily, I hadn’t turned the water on yet. I laughed at myself and took a shower. I hopped out of the shower getting dressed in a hurry. Washing my hair takes forever seeing as it’s so long. 15 minutes left. I pulled on some bright red skinny jeans and a red and white striped t-shirt with my white Supras. Accessories were all packet except for the necklace that never leaves my neck. It was a small pink heart-shaped diamond and a music note charm hanging from the delicate silver chain. It was a birthday gift from my parents.

I quickly braided my hair in a loose braid. I heard the doorbell ring and looked at my watch. 6:00 am. I grabbed my suitcase and shoulder bag, running back for my iPod in the bathroom and down the stairs. My grandparents were there with the driver, who I was surprised to be a woman looking as if she was in her late 20’s, I smiled at all of them and gave the two most important people in my life a hug and kiss. The driver took some boxes and I helped her to put it in the car. I turned and walked back to them.

“Thank you so much for all you have done for me. I’m going to miss you so much.” I said and felt a tear roll down my cheek.

“It’s our pleasure, Honey. Now before you go, we know your birthday is coming up soon and we won’t be there to celebrate it with you, but we want you to have this.” Grandma said holding up a black velvet box.

“You’ve already given me so much, how can I except anything more?” I said in disbelief as she passed me the box. I took it. Shaking as I opened it to find a bracelet with my name on it and small pink diamonds in between every letter of my name. “Its beautiful, thank you.” I said hugging them again.

“Just like you. Now go, you’re going to be late.” Grandfather whispered and gave me a light pat on the back. I turned and began walking to the car door that was already open and waiting for me. I got in and waved one last goodbye at them. They both had tears in their eyes, but smiles on their lips. The woman closed the door and then we were on the road to London.

“You might want to make yourself comfortable miss. It’s a 4 hour drive.” She told me very politely. My guess is that she has told that to so many people its second nature by now.

“Thank you. I never got your name.” I said equally as polite.

“Oh, my name’s Lacy and I’m your driver from now on when we get to London.” She said with a smile, but she seemed kind of off.

“Cool, but you don’t have to worry. I rarely go anywhere seeing as I’m not old enough to drink or go to clubs or any of that stuff.” I said giving her a genuine smile. She just nodded and looked a little bit relieved. I decided to set up my new phone and rummaged through my bag until I came out victorious. I had my headphones on and looked at the battery of my iPod. Full battery, yes! That’s a few hours that’s going to pass by quickly. Part of Me by Katy Perry came on and I turned the volume up. I was finished with my phone about 5 minutes later and didn’t feel like playing with it anymore, so it went back in my bag. I looked out the window, just staring at nothing in particular. Sleep was creeping up on me. The A Team by Ed Sheeran came on and I decided to rest my eyes for just 10 minutes.

I woke up from the car coming to a stop. The sun was up and I had to wait for my eyes to adjust. We were at a filling station.

“I see you’re awake, miss. We’re almost there. 30 minutes and then we’ll be at your new home.” She said sounding relieved.

“Please, call me Melody.” I insisted.

“Okay, Melody it is then.” She said laughing a little.

Well, what do I do for 30 minutes? I rummaged through my bag and pulled out my small sketchpad and a pencil that I brought with me everywhere I go. Pretend its OK by Little Mix came on which I happen to really like. I started drawing a cats’ face. I was so into the picture that I didn’t realise we stopped almost 5 minutes ago.

“Melody, we’re here.” Lacy said getting out of the car and opening my door for me.

“Wow…” I said trailing off. This wasn’t a small flat, this looked like a damn mansion. “Is this were I’m going to stay?”

“Yes, Lous’ house is just down that little path there. She’ll be here at around noonish to welcome you and help you get settled in.” she said picking some boxes out of the trunk. I nodded and grabbed some bags and almost ran to the front door. It was some kind of dark wood and it seemed huge. I opened it and walked inside. I was met by a grand piano, cherry red in colour, and a spiralling staircase that lead to a balcony that overlooks the foyer. This place is amazing! I ran up the stairs and came to a hallway with four doors. I opened the first door to my right and it was a bathroom, a huge one might I add. The next door to my left was a room that looked like a little study. I could set up my ‘office’ here. The door next to the bathroom was, what I’m guessing is the master bedroom. I walked in and flopped on the king sized canopy bed. I felt like I was on top of a cloud or something equally as soft. The room wasn’t huge, but it wasn’t small either. Just the perfect size for me. One more door and then I can unpack. I walked in and found an empty room. I can make this my studio! I thought. Set up my camera and all the other stuff in here. I could have shoots in here. I walked back downstairs and saw that Lacy already got all my stuff out of the car and was gone. Eh, that can wait for a while. I’m starving and just to prove my theory my stomach let out a growl. Where’s that kitchen? I walked through the archway that lead to the living room. Three huge couches were in front of the biggest television I have ever seen. I hurried over to it and switched to some music channel. The surround sound came from every corner of the room, completely shocking me. I stood there with my jaw dropped to the floor. How could I live in this place and not pay a single dime? I thought as I stood there. I turned the volume up as some song came on. I’ve never heard it before and I can’t say if I like it or not.

“You’re insecure,

Don’t know what for,

You’re turning heads when you walk through the door,

Don’t need make up to cover up”

Eh, I’m still hungry. I thought as I left the song to play and walked to the kitchen.

“Holy crap!” I practically screamed. This kitchen was extremely big. Lucky for me, I’m a decent cook. I feel like lasagne. I got all the ingredients out and started cooking enough food for Africa. I’ll just put the leftovers in the freezer for whenever. Diamonds by Rihanna came on as I was chopping the onions, my eyes watering all the way.

“Shine bright like a diamond,” I sang in that stupid nasally voice and started frying everything in the pan. I was still singing and mocking the voice coming in from the living room.

“Mmm, something smells good.” I heard an Irish accent from the living room along with a few others. I heard the music change to some other song that I didn’t know. I was pondering to go out there or not, but that was decided for me.

“Melody! Are you here?” I heard a girl yell from the living room. I walked through the door to be greeted by six people standing in the living room. I only recognised one and that was Lou.

“Hi.” I said and gave them all a small wave as my shyness overcame me.

“Hi!” the boys chorused.

“Hey, Melody. It’s great to finally meet you. I’m Lou, but I think you already knew that.” She said pulling me into a hug as my eyes grew wider and getting a chuckle from the five boys, now sitting on the couches.

“Hey! Turn that off! That’s not the reason I brought you here!” she yelled at them over the music coming from the television.

“Who are they?” I whispered into her ear. She turned around slowly, her mouth making an ‘o’ shape.

“You don’t know them? Or recognise them from somewhere?” she asked in disbelief.

“No, I lived in South Africa until a few years ago. We were really behind on everything back there.” I replied honestly.

“Oh, well, in that case. Boys! Line up!” she sounded like an army general. I actually found it quite funny.

“Sir, yes, sir!” they all shouted, jumping over the couch and lining up like real army people.

“Name!” she demanded, pointing first to the one with a black quiff with a piece of blond in the front.

“Zayn Malik, sir!” he said looking at me and then at Lou.

“Don’t you dare look at her. She’s off limits. Next!” she said pointing to one who had bleached blond hair and blue eyes.

“Niall Horan, sir!” he exclaimed with an Irish accent, looking a bit scared. So he was the one who smelled the food.

“Next!” she pointed at a boy who looked like he should own a boat.

“Louis Carrot Tomlinson, sir!” Wait, carrot? Weirdo!

“Next!” he had a buzz cut and brown eyes. He actually looked like he came out of the army.

“Liam Payne, sir!” he said.

“Last!” she pointed to the last one. He had curly hair and eyes that shone like emeralds. Wow! was all I could think.

“Harry Styles, sir!” he said looking over at me and giving me a wink. Uh oh. What was the general going to do now?

“What did I just say, maggot?” she yelled. His eyes grew wide as he realised what he did. “Drop and give me 20!” she said. He immediately dropped to the floor and took out his wallet taking out a 20 and handing it to her. That was it. They couldn’t contain their laughter any more. They were practically on the floor clutching their stomachs, everybody except me and Lou who were standing there just staring at them.

“I think something’s burning.” The one named Niall said as he sniffed the air.

“Oh shit!” I shouted and ran to the kitchen. I got to the stove just in time. Nothing was burning it was just ready to come out of the oven. “Thank god!” I exhaled placing the dish on a cooling tray. Lou came in and was followed by five boys looking at me confused.

“What’s everyone staring at?” I asked as I turned around to clean the mess I made.

“The food. It looks delicious.” Niall said staring at the lasagne.

“Well, do you want some?” I asked and received puppy dog faces from everyone including Lou. “I’ll take that as a yes then.” I hurriedly passed some plates around and everyone dug in. I didn’t eat as much as I normally do, which was weird. Oh, well. I could lose a few pounds. There were moans and groans coming from all around the table.

“This is amazing!”

“You could give Harry a run for his money!”

“Oi! I’m not that bad of a cook!” Harry yelled at who ever said that.

“I didn’t know you can cook Melody! I thought I would have to make food for us every night.” Lou said surprised.

“Oh. I helped my grandparents all the time so it really isn’t a big deal for me.” I said remembering the times we cooked and made fun of everything as a smile crept onto my face.

“I have never eaten lasagne with carrots in it! Where did you learn to make it?” Louis asked. He really did like his carrots.

“Uhm, like I said earlier, I lived in South Africa with my parents and the people there have a lot of different recipes. So when I moved here to live with my grandparents I never really let go of them.” I said as I felt a tear roll down my face upon talking about my parents. I quickly wiped it away hoping that nobody noticed, but Lou did. She didn’t say anything, but gave me a knowing look.

“Lads, I know where we’re going for food from now on.” Niall said as everyone sat back in their chairs.

“No, we can’t take advantage of her like that.” Liam said sounding like a father.

“So, now to actually do what we came here for.” Lou said clapping her hands and standing up from her chair. All the boys groaned.

“Uhm, sorry for asking, but what exactly is that?” I asked collecting the plates and walking to the sink in the kitchen.

“To help you unpack, silly.” Lou said helping me put the plates in the dishwasher.

“Oh, that’s not necessary. I can do it.” I said, but she insisted.

“Melody, where do you want this?” Niall asked holding up the frame with my parents and I in it.

“Uhm, you can put that next to my bed Niall.” I said. I finished putting my clothes away, successfully keeping the boys from seeing anything embarrassing. I was currently setting up my Macbook in the study when Liam came in with my books.

“Hey, Melody.” He said smiling at me.

“Hey, Liam.” I said not looking away from the laptop in front of me.

“One piece of advice, do not let that thing fall on your toes.” He said pointing to the laptop.

“Why?” I said looking at him like he said the sky was falling.

“Happened to me. Broke my toe.” He said shrugging. “Hey, how old are you? You look way too young to have these text books.” He said pointing to my last year English and calculus textbooks.

“Oh, I’m turning 16 in a little less week.” I said like there’s nothing weird about it.

“What?!” he almost yelled. “How?” he said holding up the books at a loss for words.

“It’s no big deal. I got bumped up a few grades, because I stuck my nose in my books after my parents died instead of going all crazy and cut myself or try to commit suicide. I actually graduated last year at the top of my class.” I rambled until I realised I said too much. He was just so easy to open up to. He was staring at me. “Liam, don’t look at me like that.”

“Sorry, I just can’t imagine having to do that all on your own, you know.” He said after blinking a few times and returning to packing the books into the shelves.

“Just please don’t tell the others. Lou knows and you know now and I’d like to keep it that way until I’m ready to tell them.” I said as I finished with my laptop shutting it and standing up to help Liam with the books.

“I won’t tell a soul.” He promised.

“Thanks.” We were finished pretty quickly seeing as I didn’t have a lot of reading material except for a few collections I had, like the House of Night series and The Sword of Truth series. I know, I’m kind of geeky, but at least I read! Unlike some other 16 year olds who go out with fake IDs and get plastered to the point of passing out.

We walked back to my room and I could hear muffled yells coming from inside.

“Did you hear that?” Liam asked concerned.

“I definitely did, yeah.” I said and opened the door. There were pillows and teddy bears flying everywhere. Harry and Niall where huddled behind the closet doors and Zayn and Louis where jumping on my bed yelling something about ruling the kingdom, all while Harry and Niall where throwing teddy bears at them along with some of my clothes.

“Pick a side and join the war!” Louis yelled. I looked to Liam who was already running to Harry and Niall. I stood there looking at the mess that was my room a few minutes ago. They were looking at me, waiting. I just turned around and walked out the door in search of Lou. I’ll let them have their fun, but seriously, these boys were almost 5 years older than me and I’m the mature one. I found Lou in the room that was soon to be my studio.

“Hey, Lou.” I said as I sat down on the chair with a sigh.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” she said looking up from the camera.

“Nothing, I guess. The boys decided to have a war in my room. Pillows, teddy bears and even clothes are flying in there.” I said as I spotted the green present box.

“They’re doing what?!” she almost screamed. I stood up and went over to the box.

“You heard right.” I said, taking out the kit my grandparents got me. Liiiiightbulb! “But leave them, I just got a perfect idea for payback.” I said as a smirk grew on my lips.

“What are you thinking?” she asked looking from me to the kit and then back to me, a smile growing on her face as realisation hit her. “No way? Really?”

“Oh yes!” I said stretching it out as I picked up some zombie stuff. My specialty. “Are you ready for the best prank ever?” I asked her. She nodded excitedly. The mirrors weren’t on the walls yet so they wouldn’t be able to see anything. I closed the blinds and turned of the lights. It was pitch black in here. Five chairs were standing around so we lined them up and got some rope to tie them to the chairs.

“Ready?” she asked as she waited by the door. I nodded and took in a position to look like I’ve fainted.

“Ready.” I whispered.

“Boys! Hurry! There’s something wrong with Melody!” she screamed sounding like she was on the brink of tears. I heard footsteps coming from my room and it sounded like a stampede. I heard gasps and then more footsteps coming towards me. Right on cue I heard the door slam shut and I heard the lock. They weren’t near me yet so I jumped up and grabbed the first body I could find.

“Oi! Get off Louis! This isn’t funny!” I heard and then I realised I was on top of Harry. He thought I was Louis! I did my best evil laugh I could manage and then tied him to a chair. They couldn’t see me, but I could see them. Lou already got Liam and was on top of Zayn.

“My hair!” he yelled. Lou just laughed. I was about to pounce Louis, but Niall came into view first. He was easy. Done and dusted. One left. I found Lou and we cornered him. I did my evil laugh that freaked him out even more and Lou tackled him to the ground. I grabbed his feet and she grabbed his arms. We carried him to the last chair and tied him up.

“Who’s there?” Harry asked from his chair.

“Oh, just a little payback.” I said as Lou flicked the light on again. They looked completely surprised.

“How did you two do this?” Niall asked. I laughed at him.

“Did I forget to mention that I lived on a farm back in South Africa? We had to do all the work ourselves. I was carrying 50 kilograms on my own by age 13.” I said flexing my arms. They all just stared at me like I was made out of gold. “So Lou. Do you want to help or is this were I prove myself to you?” I asked looking at the boys who were now looking at Lou and then at me and then at the huge make up kit behind me.

“Prove yourself, girl!” Lou laughed at my question.

“Where do I start?” I asked out loud as I walked in front of them. “Maybe with the two who were throwing my undergarments around.” I said stopping in front of Harry. His eyes grew wider as I pulled the kit closer.

“Oh, no! Please, no!” he pleaded.

“Sorry, Harry, but payback’s a bitch.” I said sweetly. “Mmmmm, Lou? Zombie or fairy princess?” I asked rubbing my chin.

“Both!” she laughed.

I started and was in the zone. He just sat there with his eyes closed. I was finished like 10 minutes later. Lou left and said I had to text her as soon as I’m finished.

“I’ll be right back.” I said as I turned to the door.

“Wait! Where are you going?” Liam asked.

“You’ll see when I get back. Jeez patience is the key ingredient.” I sighed as I walked to my wrecked room. I rummaged through the last box that had my docking station and grabbed my shoulder bag. I went back in to the studio to find the guys in a hushed conversation. I think Harry fell asleep while I was working on him, because there were light snores coming from him.

“What are we talking about guys?” I asked as I plugged my iPod in.

“Nothing!” they said a little too quickly, but I ignored it.

“Shuffle!” I yelled as Payphone by Maroon 5 came on. They stared at me blankly as I walked back to continue my work on Niall. I was doing the alien from the Katy Perry video of E.T. He wouldn’t stop staring at me, until I noticed I was humming along with the tune. I was finished by the time I realised this. I blushed and turned around to the kit and getting some other things for the three that was left. Go-Go dancers. Definitely. I was finished 30 minutes later. Harry was still fast asleep.

“Finished…” I sighed as I slumped in my chair next to the desk.

“Can you let us go now?” Niall asked.

“No can do, sorry.” I said taking out my phone and texted Lou. It wasn’t even 5 minutes when she stormed in the room and instantly broke down laughing.

“Is he asleep?” she asked between fits of laughter. I nodded smiling at her. I grabbed the camera and walked around to each boy taking a picture for my portfolio.

“Lou can you untie us now?” Louis whined like a little kid.

“Yeah, so you can go see your faces!” she said still giggling. We untied everyone except Harry. We had different plans for him seeing as he fell asleep.

“Lou.” I whispered at her. “You in for another prank?” I asked and pointed to Harry. She had a wicked grin plastered on her face.

“Oh yeah, but lets get the others in on this one.” I nodded and we headed downstairs.

The boys were in front of the television examining my work.

“You know, a mirror would work much better.” I said making them jump.

“You really do have talent, Melody.” Lou said completely serious.

“Thanks. Now how about we pull that prank now?” I asked and instantly got everyone’s attention.

“What prank?” Louis asked.

“Harry fell asleep while I was working on him. Never fall asleep when I’m busy with you. I told him payback’s a bitch and he’s going to meet her for a second time today.” I stated as I saw all of their eyes turn dark.

“I got the perfect idea.” Louis said. “You know how Harry is always going after the older woman? Yeah, I volunteer for Melody to make me look like a 70-year-old lady. We can strip him down to his boxers, put him in your bed and I’ll dress up like an old lady and you know,” he said wiggling his eyebrows. Everyone seemed to understand except me. He noticed, “ew gross not like that, I’ll just lay there.” He said and I sighed in relief. They all laughed at me.

“I got the perfect outfit for that and I happen to have a wig that could work.” I said receiving weird looks from everyone including Lou. “I have something like a costume chest, if you know what I mean.”

“Oh, yeah! I saw that earlier when…” Niall stopped as soon as he realised what he was about to say.

“Okay! Lets go, but I am not helping getting him undressed.” I stated.

“Aww, she’s blushing!” Zayn said pointing to my glowing cheeks.

“Come on Melody! Haven’t you ever seen a guy in boxers before?” Louis asked me as I felt my cheeks burning like a wildfire.

“Guys, I’m only 15, why would I have seen someone in their boxers before?” I asked looking at the floor.

“I’m turning 16 in a week.” I said not looking up.

“But how are you finished with high school already?” Niall asked.

“I skipped a few grades.” I simply said.

“Wow!” they all said.

“Now, back to the prank!” Lou said running back up the stairs. Harry was still fast asleep when I finished Louis’ granny make up. I gave him the wig and outfit and left him to change. Liam, Niall and Zayn were all busy trying to untie Harry, but my knots seemed to out smart them.

“Here, let me help.” I said pulling the end of the rope and all the knots came loose.

“Where did you learn that?” Zayn asked.

“On the farm. Tying horses is tricky so I figured this was easiest.” I shrugged. No big deal. They carried Harry to my bed and started stripping him down slowly. Louis came in and was struggling with his wig. I turned around quickly not wanting to see what was underneath Harrys’ clothes and helped Louis with the wig. He looked me in the eyes while I was struggling a bit.

“You can sneak a peak, if you know what I mean.” He whispered to me as a froze for a second.

“Its done.” They whispered.

I turned around to find Harry cuddling my pillow. Aaw, he’s a cuddler. Soon the pillow was replaced by Louis in his granny outfit. We sneaked out the door and I found my air horn on the table next to the door. I knew it would come in handy. I smiled as I picked it up and received encouraging nods from everyone. I pushed the button and it screeched through the room. Harry sat up straight and we hid behind the door, peeking through a crack. Niall had his phone out and was recording everything. He sat there looking around the empty room for a while and then turned to Louis in disguise. His face went from bored to shocked in a matter of seconds. He let a scream erupt and tripped over the duvet cover face planting on the floor. We all tumbled into the room, laughing and rolling on the floor. Louis sat up in the bed going into hysterics and pulling of the wig.

“What’s going on here?” Harry yelled in a state of panic.

“You should’ve seen your face, mate!” Niall said through his laughs.

“What? You mean this is a prank?” he said still kind of panicking.

“You don’t recognise me, Hazzabear?” Louis asked, clutching his chest in mock hurt.

“What the fuck is wrong with you people?” he said flipping out. He stormed out of the room while pulling on his clothes.

“Harry, wait!” I said. Starting to leave the room, but Liam stopped me.

“Let him cool down. It’s not your fault. Come on guys, we should get going. Thanks for the meal, Melody.” He said as everyone said goodbye and filed out of the house and into their cars. Harry was already gone. Lou was still standing there, with a sad expression on her face.

“I’m sorry. He’s not usually like this.” She pointed at the driveway. “Would you like to come over to mine? I have to bake Lux some cookies.”

“Thanks, but I think I’m just going to crash. I mean its already 4 o clock, but thank you for helping me out today.” I said giving her a smile, but I wasn’t happy.

“Okay, but you can come by any time even if it’s just to talk about something.” She said giving me another knowing look.

“Thanks Lou.” I said and we went our separate ways.

I went upstairs to fetch my phone, laptop and camera. I went into the studio and saw I left some things open that were not supposed to be open. That’s very unlike me. I closed them and grabbed my shoulder bag and camera. I headed into the study and grabbed my laptop.

I flopped onto one of the black couches and turned the television on. Flipping through the channels. Nothing. Like usual. That’s why I don’t watch TV too often. I stopped at a rerun of the 2012 Brit Awards. It seemed like it just started. Eh, not interested. I thought, but didn’t change the channel. I switched to my laptop. I connected my camera and started placing the pictures into a folder. I came across a few I don’t remember taking. It was mostly Lou making funny faces at the lens. She is really funny. There were a few others of the boys and then I came across myself. Who ever took these really has a photographic eye. They were really good. I saved them in a separate folder.

“So Harry…” I zoned out after I heard his name. I turned my full attention to the show. There they were. All five boys that were in my house this morning, sitting there in suits looking all professional. As the host droned on about some random stuff, I just kept looking at the curly haired boy. He cleaned up good I have to admit. From that moment on, I was glued to the screen. They never actually told me what they did. I knew they were famous, but I didn’t know they were in a band together. They performed and I recognised the song from this morning. I was pulled out of my trance by my phone going off next to me. I grabbed it and stared at the screen for a minute.

1 new message: I’m sorry…

I quickly unlocked the phone and read the message. It was from Harry.

I’m sorry for the way I acted today.

I shouldn’t have stormed out like that.

Harry. xxx

Ooookaaaay… why is he apologising to me? I saved his number and quickly texted him back.

To: Harry

It’s alright. I shouldn’t have pulled that second prank.

You had every reason to be mad. How’d you get my number?

2012 Brit awards rerun. Bored out of my mind. I should get to bed now.

Long day tomorrow. Goodnight Harry.

From: Harry

I was so bored that night! I understand completely how you feel.

Sleep tight, sweetheart. Dream of me now ;)

Cheeky little boy. I swear I’m more mature than all five of them put together. I switched the TV off and trudged upstairs. I didn’t even bother changing my clothes I was so tired. I climbed into my cloud and sleep came easily seeing that I was up since 5 this morning. My life was finally getting better.
