Fan Rants

Even if we're totally in love with something we will always find flaws. Here are some rants I, and others, feel about things we adore.

11. The hobbit: The Elvenking

Lots of people are imagining the elvenking as two things:

1. Drunk

OK, yes he likes wine but in the books it says "It must be potent wine to make a wood-elf drowsy", therefore indicating wine doesn't affect  them much. It was also clear that the only reason Galiona and the cheif of the Mirkwood guard only fell asleep because the wine they were drinking was very strong and meant for smaller amounts not the large flagons they drunk it in.

2. Selfish (or whatever you like) for not helping when Erebor was attacked

Being an elf (and that means wise unless you are a son of Feanor even though they were kind of loyal) he- unlike pretty much everyone lese- realised that if he tried to reclaim Erebor he would probably lose about 3/4 of his army. Wood elf numbers were already diminshed when only 1/3 came back from the last alliance. And if they weren't able to kill the dragon, Smaug would have most likely have made raids on Mirkwood and killed half of what remained of his people. I personally respect him for putting the lives of his people first and also recoginsing what was probably a lost cause

Also, Thrandruil is a sindarin elf not a silvian elf so he probably lived in Doriath before his father Oropher founded the Woodland realm from small tribes of elves of the teleri who stayed in middle earth. He most likely saw dwarves killing Thingol, king of that realm so they could steal a silmaril (belonging to the elves and valar), so that would lead to distrust or even hatred of dwarves explaining why he didn't give help.
