4. On My Own

I woke up, back in my dorm. I felt dizzy and disorientated as you do when you have been in a deep sleep. I could hear Izzy’s quiet sobs above me. Kelsey, Sophie, Josh and Owen were all sat on the sofa whispering.

“Tia, you’re awake,” Owen said quietly.

“What happened?” I asked as I sat up in my bed, rubbing my head

“Well, we think you’ve found your power.” Josh said.

Owen sat next to me and put an arm around my shoulders.

“What power?” I asked, “I was just hearing things!”

“You have possibly the most important power out of all of us right now and you’re refusing to help?” Sophie stared at me with bloodshot eyes, as if she had just stopped crying a few moments ago.

“Tia,” Owen stared straight at me with those big, brown eyes, “You can speak to the dead.”

“No,” I shook my head, “No, that’s crazy!”

“Think, Tia,” Josh knelt down so that he was my height, “What did he say?”

“He…” What had he said? I couldn’t differentiate between dreams and reality, “He said that he didn’t kill himself.”

“Is that all he said?” Sophie asked, kneeling next to Josh.

I nodded. I didn’t feel like I could speak. Was that knocking on the window a warning?

“So that must mean…” Sophie trailed off.

“One of us is a murderer.” Kelsey said in a small voice.

“How do all your powers work?” I asked after a moment of silence.

“Well, we all have limits,” Sophie began, “I can only make someone do something if they’re willing or it’s something they would do.”

“So it’s more persuasion then?” I asked.

She nodded.

“I can only see someone’s thoughts if they let me, like they don’t resist.” Kelsey murmured.

“I can levitate up to two stories, but that’s all.” Josh said, looking down.

“Izzy can transform into any creature but not ones that fly or live underwater,” Owen explained, “Ben could talk to any animal that makes a noise, so not things like bugs and fish, and I can resist any powers that people try to use on me, but I can’t let them go ahead with their powers either.”

“What about Mr White?” I asked him.

“Well, he can turn invisible but it’s not like he can walk through walls or anything like that.” He said.

After making sure that I was ready to resist, should Sophie or Kelsey try to get in my head, I thought of what motives any of them could possibly have or anything strange they had done recently.

What was Izzy doing in the boy’s dorm in the first place? Were the boys there when he died? How come Sophie was crying more now than when she saw the body? Did Kelsey know something that she wasn’t telling us? Was that why she had been so quiet until now? Had, god forbid, a teacher killed him?

I needed to find out the answers. A deadly betrayal had taken place here, I knew it.

I closed my eyes and steadied my breathing. How was I going to contact Ben?

My head felt heavy again, but this time I was prepared for it. The room looked as if it were a reflection in troubled waters.

“It’s one of them…”

“It’s not safe…”

“They’re planning another kill…”

That was when I realised, I was on my own.

There were a lot of things I needed to know. But I’d have to be sneaky. If the killer knew I had a lot of evidence on them, I’d need to be prepared for any form of attack.

I really was…on my own.
