5. Nowhere Is Safe

The next day was snooping day. I would find out as many motives as possible. I had to be careful though; one wrong move and I would be dead. If the killer really was planning to kill again then time was running out, but when? When would it be too late to save anyone? Could I even manage it? Yes, I would have to. Nowhere is safe.

I decided to leave speak to Izzy for last, she was still distraught. My plan was to ask about other people and not give away any information that I had already, that way no one would know if I had any information against them.

“Who do you think it might have been?” I asked, once I was sure the two of us were alone.

“I really don’t know,” Owen shook his head, “he seemed to get along nicely with everyone.”

“Did anyone seem annoyed at him that day?”

“Well, he and Josh had had an argument,” he sighed, “but it was all friendly.”

“What were they arguing about?”

“Oh, I don’t know, all I could hear was them shouting that morning when I left for breakfast.”

“Had he upset anyone?” I needed more than this argument to go on.

“Not that I could think of,” Owen shook his head.

“Why was Izzy so upset? Do you think she was acting?”

“You probably didn’t know this, but the two of them were together.” He told me, “They were, like, the perfect couple. They never argued or anything.”

“Did he have any ex-girlfriends?” Suddenly it clicked. If they were the perfect couple Owen said they were, that would make an ex-girlfriend jealous for sure. Jealous enough to murder?

“Well, yeah, Sophie,” He said, “But it was ages ago and she seemed fine with it.”

So I had evidence against two of my friends already.

“Thanks for helping out,” I said as I walked off to find one of the others.

The next person to cross my path was Kelsey.

“Hey, Kelsey, I was wondering if you could help me out. It’s just, I need more information on the others and I trust you.” That was a lie.

“Sure, anything.” She said. She really was taking this hard, she was really pale and she looked like she hadn’t slept.

“Any idea’s why someone would want to kill him?” I asked quietly.

She shook her head and closed her eyes, “He was such a good guy.”

“Did he tell you if anything was bothering him?”

“No but I know he had an argument that morning with someone, I keep trying to remember who it was but I just can’t.”

“Do you know what the argument was about?” There it was again. The argument must have been important.

“I think it was about something one of them was doing.” She furrowed her brow, trying to think, “One of them had been doing something for a while and the other one didn’t like it.”

“Can you think of anyone else’s motives?”

“Well, he wasn’t doing particularly well in school, but I’m sure that Mr White wouldn’t kill him for it.”

That was something against Mr White. Would a teacher really kill a student because he wasn’t doing well in school? I doubted it, but it was always an option. I needed to speak to him.

I knocked on the door to Mr White’s office.

“What’s wrong?” He asked.

“I’ve been thinking about who killed Ben.” I said, looking down at my hands.

“Killed?” He looked at me sternly, “Ben clearly stabbed himself.”

“No,” I said, “He told me that he didn’t.”

“How could he tell you if he’s dead?” Mr White was beginning to scare me. He was staring at me.

At that I left. I couldn’t exactly stay. He seemed pretty sure that Ben had committed suicide, what if he was the one who did it? He could easily have turned invisible and made him stab himself.

Were teachers killing students? Was there any hope if he killed one of us? If he was the killer, would he kill me now that I knew his secret?

I had to survive…for Ben’s sake…
