5. Chapter 5

After I finished my boring homework, I went into the kitchen and helped my sister and mother make our meager dinner. At least I was able to hunt for our food. When everything was ready we all sat down at our small wooden table. The wood chairs creaked under our weight as we sat down. The lantern above our heads burned bright but somehow dim

"Where's dad?" Katy asked during our meal.

"He's working late." My mother replied

See, my dad works at a factory that makes weapons for the military. He works really hard but he still doesn't make very much money. That's why I work as well. I work for Ms. Monroe. She's one of the richer people in town. Today was one of the rare times I get the weekday off besides weekends. She had to go on some important business trip to the capitol city for the day. I'm pretty much her servant. That and a waitress for her bed and breakfast restaurant. It may not be my dream job but at least it gives us some money. We don't really need money for food but we need it to pay taxes. Another law the government forces us to obey. Soldiers come by every Thursday demanding money that only goes to making more factories.

We ate the rest of our meal in silence that gripped the room like ice.

"I'll put the plates away" I offered, standing up from my chair and taking the empty plates from that table

I brought them into the kitchen and washed them down with the wet rag. I piled the plates beside the sink and dried my hands with a towel. I walked back into the dining room. My mom and my sister were still sitting at the table.

"Goodnight" I said to my mom and kissed her on the cheek.

"Goodnight" she replied to me, seeming rather down

I wrapped my arms around my sister and gave her a big kiss on the cheek. She let out a small yelp as I scooped her up and started to carry her down the hallway. She laughed all the way into my parent's bedroom (which was also her room). I ran into the room and threw her on the bed. She giggled and got under the covers.

"Goodnight, bug" I smiled and kissed her on the forehead

My mom walked in and smiled at us. She walked over and crawled into her own bed.

"Goodnight" I said again

"Goodnight" My mother and Katy replied in almost perfect unison.

I blew out the flame from the lantern, walked out of the bedroom, and shut the door carefully and quietly.

I walked into my room and shut the door. I got dressed in a simple t-shirt and shorts. I flicked the light off and crawled into bed. I tossed and turned trying to fall asleep but found that I couldn't. Wolf became very annoyed with me moving a lot and decided to just sleep next to the bed rather than on it. I lay, staring at my ceiling for who knows how long. I heard the front door open at what I could guess was about 11. I could hear quiet footsteps go down the hallway and into my parent's and Katy's bedroom. I guessed that it was my dad because I heard no other noise after that. I had no idea why but my ears were always sensitive to footsteps. I continued to stare at my ceiling until finally sleep overtook me.

************************************************************

Like every night, I had the same dream. And just like every morning, I woke with my family's screams still echoing in my head. I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. I slammed my fist on the alarm clock that was still beeping. I threw the covers off and stood up. Wolf lifted her head to look at me. I walked over to my chest. Beside it were three buckets. Wolf ran over and grabbed one of the buckets. I scratched behind her ears and grabbed the other two. I put on my boots and a jacket over my nightgown. I quietly opened my bedroom door and tiptoed through the house. The air outside smelled sweet and crickets were chirping loudly. The sky was pale from the slow-rising sun. With Wolf beside me, I walked out to the forest. I reached inside my bucket and pulled out three water spigots. I stuck the spigots into three different trees, putting buckets under them as I did so. I could hear the sound of the water running into the buckets. I yanked the spigots out when the buckets were almost full. Wolf picked one bucket up and I picked up the other two. I walked back to my house. I was careful not to splash water as I tiptoed down the hall and into the bathroom. It was a simple room. The walls were made of sanded wood planks. I dumped two of the buckets  in a filter that connected to a large metal tub. I turned on the faucet that was on one end of the tub. Wolf placed her bucket on the floor and walked back to my room. I closed the door as she walked out. I put a hand in the tub of water. It was warm. I stripped down and threw my clothes to the side. The air was cold against my bare skin. I sighed as I slid down into the warm water. I reached over the side to grab a bar of soap and a rag. I washed myself until my fingers turned wrinkly. I stood up and stepped out of the tub. I shivered as the drops running down my body chilled. I grabbed the towel off the rack. I dried myself as best as I could and wrapped the towel around me. I opened the door and walked over to my room. I pulled open my closet door and pulled out a black t-shirt and dark jeans. I pulled off my towel and put the outfit on. I walked back into the bathroom and stood in front of the sink. I looked into the mirror above the counter for many moments. I pulled the mirror and opened the medicine cabinet. I pulled out my hair brush, toothbrush and toothpaste. I set the tooth brush and toothpaste on the counter and combed through my tangled hair. I could feel the knots disappear and I set the brush on the counter. I then proceeded to brush my teeth. I picked up my clothes and walked back to my room, passing my sister as she walked into the bathroom. I threw the clothes into a pile in the corner of the room. I turned around and walked back into the kitchen. I took the small pan that was lying in the sink and put  it on the stove. I opened up the small fridge in the corner and felt a small wave of cool air flow out. I grabbed a plastic container filled with small eggs, and a jug half-way filled with milk. I put the jug of milk on the counter and turned the stove on. I took three eggs out of the container and put them by the jug. I walked back over to the fridge and put the container back. I cracked the eggs above the pan and listened to the sizzle as they hit the hot surface. The smell flooded my senses until that was all i could smell. Letting them cook, i walked to a cabinet and took down three glass cups. I took the jug of milk and poured and equal amount into the cups. I turned around as my sister walked in. She had her favorite yellow dress on and her hair was wet  and combed through.

"Smells good," She said sniffing the air

I smiled and handed her a glass of milk. She sipped it happily. I grabbed a towel out of one of the drawers and did my best to dry her hair. I draped the towel over her shoulders.

"Don't want to soak your dress before school" I smiled

She smiled back and continued to drink her milk. I walked back over to the stove and turned it off. Katy had already gotten three plates out of the cabinets. I took the spatula and put one egg on each plate.I grabbed two of the plates and Katy grabbed the other one. We set the plates on the table and my mom walked in. She walked into the kitchen and grabbed the two glasses of milk. She handed one to me and we all sat down to eat. As I sat, I looked at the open cabinet in the kitchen. I counted the number of clean stacked plates. I counted twelve. I thought we only had seven. Did my mother bye extra plates? And if so, Why?
