14. Something's missing

It was late at night, way past 11:00pm when Mark went to check up on Helena. He made sure no one  - especially not Percy Jackson - knew he was going there. He constantly felt nervous whenever he would make his way to the infirmary. There was only one person who knew about Mark's late-night visits to Helena, Will Solace. Will knew not to mess with an Ares child - considering his unfortunate encounters with Clarisse La Rue, and so he made sure he was always on call so that Will was the only one around camp who knew.

But one night, Mark arrived to find Will asleep in his chair. Mark laughed lightly and simply walked past him. He nearly sat down. Nearly. He noticed that a certain black haired, sea green eyed girl was missing. He woke Will with an angry grunt before he went to tell Percy - he wouldn't be happy had Mark not told him after the incident with Helena. Mark knocked at least four times before the son of Poseidon answered the door.

"Gods Mark. It's 11:10pm. What the Hades?" Percy interrupted Mark. He snapped out of his lazy daze when he saw the alert on Mark's face. "What's going on?" Percy asked abruptly. "Helena's not in the infirmary. Is she here?" Percy's eyes grew wide. "PERCY IS SHE HERE?" Mark half shouted. Percy looked at him before getting close enough in his face to shout "Does it look like SHE'S HERE?" Percy put on a shirt and the two young men went to find Helena. Mark was secretly glad he Percy hadn't asked as to why Mark was at the infirmary.

Helena couldn't sleep. She got up and decided she needed to walk, to clear her head. She walked straight past Will and to Thalia's tree. She realised that the light from the tree had gone, leaving a dull - looking pine in its wake. Helena spent a good half an hour trying to walk - without wincing - up the hill to the tree. She made it to the tree - barely - and someone caught before she broke her neck.

"Gods Helena!" Mark and Percy shouted in unison as Mark caught Helena. "You scared us. Come on, we need to get you back to the infirmary." Percy stated. Helena struggled Mark's grip. He thought it may have had something to do with her burnt back. Percy thought that too before she broke from Mark's hands and said "No. Not yet. Look at the tree. The light's gone. I wanted to know why. Ugh." She started walking but winced every now and again so Percy tried helping. She refused, muttering things about being fine and not needing anyone's help.

Helena reached the tree by herself, but with the two guys closely behind her just in case. She realised why the tree wasn't in it's lively form quickly. It was missing something very important.

It was missing the fleece.
