22. Chapter 21

Reiss’ POV

One week I have been in and out of consciousness. People have come and gone but I am locked in the basement away from everything. Mum says its best I stay here until things have died down like they usually do. She says I’ve been bad and this is my punishment for ringing Louis. I told her I just wanted to speak to him and see if he’s okay, she didn’t believe me. I’m trying to hold on for as long as I can, just so I can see Louis when he comes and gets me. I know he’s coming, I know he won’t give up until he’s found me. Blood seeped from my leg throughout the majority of this morning, if it is even the morning. I’ve lost track of the time and day and maybe that isn’t a bad thing. It’s been especially noisy today, mum wants us to move again once she knows no one’s watching us.

After several attempts of pushing myself up from the floor I managed to sit up leaning against the wall. I don’t think I have enough energy to stand. Mum came into the basement searching for something, not sure why as this room has nothing to it, except a broken boy of course – that being me. She lifted me up from the floor and placed me over her shoulder as she searched the pockets in my jeans. She growled pulling out the piece of paper she was looking for and threw me back down.

“You need to call him again and tell him that you don’t want to be found, that you are happy here with me have you got that?” she spoke to me as if I were a baby.

I shook my head “I want to see him mum”

She screamed in frustration “you are never to see that boy again, he ruined our family can’t you see that? Once he got what he wanted he left I can’t let him take you too."

“I love him” I cried and sprang free from her grip. She stood frozen as she absorbed the word ‘love’.

“You love him what about me?” she asked as if it was obvious that I loved her.

“I love you too” I said unconvincingly as she sunk to the floor and pressed her hands against her head. How does she expect me to love her after everything she’s taken from me?

The clothes she wore had become dishevelled as time passed and I realised how old and ragged she looked. She certainly hasn’t aged well, perhaps all the stress she’s put on herself. She looked right through me as she spoke “we’re leaving here” she said quietly. Although the way she said it, it sounded more like a question, as if I would have a choice. She stood up and grabbed my arm causing me to topple over from the pain.

“Mum stop” I shivered, the pain is getting too much. “You’re killing me” I managed to say as I fell to the floor my arms wrapped around my stomach.

Three hard knocks banged loudly on the front door and mum frowned. She locked the door to the basement and descended down the stairs. I had gotten used to the various sounds now, probably from spending too much time up here. I felt dazed as I struggled to stay awake to hear who was there, was it another policeman like before, had they come back to rescue me? I choked when I heard his voice, Louis.

The energy I didn’t know I had pushed me to the door of the basement so I could hear more clearly. I wonder why mum answered the door?

“You are not welcome here” she said spitefully.

I heard a cry of distress followed by a loud bang “where is he?” Louis cried. My heart raced and I closed my eyes listening to his voice. He came and found me, he loves me I knew he would find me.

“He ran away” I heard her lie “after he rang you, he well he left and I haven’t seen him since.”

“You’re lying” Louis shouted “you’re lying I know it” he roared.

“Why would I lie? I’ve lost everything because of you, my daughter and my son even my husband.”

“You deserve no one" he hissed.

And then I heard another voice I didn't recognise "listen to me you bat no one has to get hurt just give us Reiss" he said, who is this and how does he know me?

She cackled "aw Louis didn't want to come alone..."

I couldn't hear the rest of the conversation my mind had gone blank. My eyes shot open when I heard the door close.

What that’s it he’s gone? NO! After all of that he just left, he believed her why would he believe her now? She’s a liar and she would do anything to find me if I had escaped she’s lying. I cried out as loud as possible and nothing happened. This would take all of my energy I know it but I have to try I can’t sit here and do nothing. I stood up and banged the walls to the basement “LOUIS” I screamed “LOUIS I’M HERE LOUIS HELP ME.” My voice began to break “Louis” I cried and my knee’s gave away causing me to thump back down onto the floor. “Louis” I said again but there was no point he was gone.
