21. Chapter 20

Louis’ POV

It’s been a week since Rae left me and the phone call from Reiss. I haven’t left the house besides a few trips to the police station – who aren’t my favourite people right now. They give us all this crap how they are here to help and they’ll do whatever to make things better. What have they done to protect Reiss?

They said they would contact me with more information with the whereabouts of the number. The technology they have created these days is incredible – to think they can find out the whereabouts of one phone call. But they are taking too long. Reiss could be somewhere else by now.

I don’t like to think about my relationship with Rae right now. The only thing that’s keeping me sane is Reiss. I suppose I just have to accept she had her reasons and she will come back to me – whenever that may be.

Harry knocked for the fifteenth time today, guessing he didn’t get the message I wanted to be left alone.

“Come on Lou I know you’re in there” he whined.

“Go away” I tried to shout but it came out as a faint whisper.

“Louis” he shouted.

I ignored him and turned up the volume to my stereo, Viva la vida burst through the speakers. His knocks muffled in with the music, almost unnoticeable now. The flat has become miserable and desolate, the smell of lavender perfume soaked into Rae’s pillow – my pillow now. I kept it close to me at all times, wherever I went so did the pillow.

I scraped off dried pasta from the wall – the result of Rae leaving – and chucked it into the almost full bin. Another thing I have abandoned, along with the rest of the housework. I haven’t showered in days, my life seems to have no point anymore. But of course without me Reiss would never be found, I’m his only hope. I almost didn’t hear the phone ring above the music, but my ears are prone to hear the sound.

The music came to a halt as I listened intently to the other end.

“Are you there?” the woman asked.

“Yes” I coughed clearing my throat “yes” I repeated.

“We need to talk, can you come down to the station?” she got straight to the point, which I liked.

“I’ll be right there” I said and hung up the phone. There was no time for readjusting my appearance or even trying to get rid of the vile smell on my unwashed clothes.

Forgetting to close the door or grab my keys, I tumbled into Harry tripping over his foot. He stood there sternly with his arms crossed over his chest. His eyes closed for half a second before his eyes glared into me.

“I have been knocking and knocking and knocking for days, tell me what was so important to get you out of this flat?” he said spitefully.

“Not now” I half shouted trying to budge past him. He of course stopped me pushing me back against the wall.

“I’m not putting up with this shit Lou, we have been best friends for years and you shut me out. What is going on?”

If my nails weren’t digging into my hands I would have lost it or snapped. But my main focus was the pain in my hand that worsened the more Harry spoke.

“Do you not care at all?” he spat.

The pain wasn’t strong enough, my emotions were getting the better of me. “Do you want to know what was so fucking important that I had to go, that I need to hurry?” I screamed.

He was used to this side of me, of course he was “what?” he growled.

“My girlfriend, or should I say ex I don’t know has a brother Reiss I told you about him. He has been missing for months and I have an inch of hope that I could find him. If you want to keep me here having this deep and meaningful shit of a conversation please continue” my voice remained cold.

Harry left me and came back with my keys in his hand and shut the door “let’s go.”

I didn’t have time to argue – or the effort – we moved in a fast pace towards my car. He thought it was best he drove given my state, surprised he hasn’t mentioned the smell.

“When did you last shower?” he crinkled his nose. Well almost didn’t mention…

“I’ve had other things on my mind” I shrugged putting on my seatbelt. Harry is equally as shit as I am at driving.

“Wait back there did you say ex?”

I nodded, words were too painful. He stared at me stunned for a moment before setting off. Throughout the rest of the journey he did not mention Rae, or anything wrong with how I looked – or smelt.

I didn’t realise I had drifted off until I awoke to Harry parking the car “we’re here” he said to me, if that wasn’t obvious.

We entered the police station side by side, my confidence had dishevelled this past week I needed him. He led me towards the desk where we were asked who we were and why we were here. Once I said my name she nodded and left us before coming back with the woman I had seen at the beginning of this week. She smiled warmly at me but her eyes showed something else, sadness, fear even. She brought us to a room in the back which was as blank as the expression on my face.

“And who is this?” she looked at Harry.

“This is Harry, Harry this is Susan”

Harry smiled at her and sat down next to me resting his chin on his hands. Susan looked at me and drummed her fingers on the table trying to find the words.

“So it’s bad news then?” I broke the silence.

She sighed “it could be worse” she tried to comfort me.

“How?” I laughed “tell me how could it be worse?”

“The phone line was cut but that was before we traced the address. If anyone was living there they would be long gone by now.”

“How do you know that it was them?”

She pulled out a bear, the bear Rae had given Reiss. It was mine when I was a child, Rae fell in love with it when she first came to mine. She slept with it without my permission, I of course didn’t mind. She left it with Reiss at the hospital the night we left him.

“We found this” she said as quietly as possible. You’d think she’d be used to telling people bad news.

“They could go back there” I tried to think of something positive.

She shook her head “her mum knows what she’s doing, she wouldn’t come back.”

“What’s the address?” I snapped.

“I can’t give you that bit of information” she told me.

“Fuck off I’m the one who led you to it, if he’s out there I will find him tell me” I shouted.

“I’m sorry” she said standing up “if there’s anything else?”

“Yeah go to hell” I whispered shoving the seat backwards.

Harry who had remained silence swore at her and followed me out.

“What are we going to do?” he asked me.

“You heard her, there’s nothing we can do” I wiped away any tears that had escaped.

“You really have changed” he smiled.

“Excuse me?”

“When did the old Louis ever take no for an answer?” he raised his brow.

I felt myself laugh as I shook my head, he has a point.

“Keep her distracted” I told him as I noticed Susan approaching the reception desk. I slipped in the back where we just were and scanned the room. My eyes dropped as I noticed her brown briefcase. There was nothing much inside, an apple, phone, pen, pencil and a file. I opened the file and looked for recent addresses or recent notes. She had scribbled down an address on one of the pages. I ripped it out and stuffed it in my pocket before leaving the room. I didn’t have time to put anything back as I heard her voice getting louder and louder. I knocked into her as I ran past her shoving her against the wall.

“Sorry” I mumbled grabbing Harry’s arm and pushing him out the police station.

“You got it?” he asked enthusiastically.

“Would the old Louis ever fail?”

He laughed knowing the answer and got into the car this time allowing me to drive.

“Well what are we waiting for?” he asked.

I smiled and started the engine "nothing" I said loud enough so he could hear, nothing at all.
