John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." An interesting thought to bring up at this moment is the opposite of that. What if no one ever chose to believe in the actions of Jesus, and what exactly is eternal life? Hell is often referred to as eternal punishment in the Bible, and for those who are righteous, will have eternal life. Would you not need to be alive to be punished, and so by extension, would not hell be a type of eternal life? James 2:14-19 helps with this thought. In those verses it says that faith and actions are to go in the same hand. It also mentions that the demons believe that there is one God, and yet they do have a type of eternal life, one which isn’t very favorable though. So then we come to Ephesians 2:8 which says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” From this we can say that we are saved from eternal punishment if and only if we believe in Jesus’ acts with faith that we will be saved.

Now for the other question: “What if no one ever chose to believe in the actions of Jesus?” So, would an atheist even experience eternal punishment? At first glance, it would appear that they would not experience hell or heaven. However, when that they chose not to give recognition to any beliefs (as they reject all of them) they have also, in the same token, believed in it to some extent. Would they have needed to reject a belief if it was impossible to believe in? Essentially, in their recognition of a belief, they have deemed it worthy of being possible to believe in; and thus, believed it to some extent to reject it. They lack but one thing… faith.
