19. The Confidant

Ally’s POV

I don’t even know why I called him.

Out of everyone, why did I have to call him?

We hardly talked that much but somehow the day after Harry’s straight forward confession, I had retrieved my phone, scrolled through my contacts and for the first time, hit dial on the contact marked ‘Zaynster’.

I bit my lower lip as a series of rings began.

‘Hang up, Ally! Hang up!’ a voice in my head yelled but before I could even heed it’s warnings I was met with a sleepy “Hullo?” echoing from the other end.

“Uh… hey Zayn,” I began, nervousness leaking into my voice, “It’s me. Ally.”

Then I heard the sound of bed creaking, stuff being lodged off something.

“Uh… hey Als?” I could hear the surprise in his tone. “Can I … Can I help ya with something?”

Damn. Right. I flipping woke him up.

“Sorry, did I wake ya up?”

“Nah…” I could hear in his tone that he was clearly lying in order to not make me feel bad. He must’ve thought that too because he then said, “Uh… it’s alright though; it was about time I got up. Anything I can help ya with, love?”

I paused, thinking of what exactly to say before adding, “I’m sorry. This’ll probably be asking you too much. You don’t have to do this but I just need someone to talk to. Can we meet up somewhere?” Shit, I sounded desperate.

He chuckled. “Yea, sure thing. Not a problem. Where do you want to meet up?”

“Great choice. See ya in say… half an hour?”

“That’s fine.”

“Okay, see ya.”

“Yea,” I smiled into the phone, “Oh and Zayn.”

Thirty two minutes later, I pulled up in front of the nearest Starbucks in my Mercedes.

I was late thanks to the paparazzi that had tagged along.

“Who you meeting up with, love?” I recognized the man from the few run ins we’d had. “Liam? Harry?”

I shake my head. “No comment,” I muttered just before the manager blocked them from entering the premises.

They joined the other paps that were already waiting.

Zayn must’ve already arrived.

Sooner or later the paparazzi would exchange details of who they’d been tracking and would figure it out.

Zayn was sitted at the furthest booth, the only one not to a window, frankly not looking his very bet thanks to me having rushed him.

In front of him were two cups and a platter of scones, bagels and the likes.

“Als,” he erupted, spotting me. He got up and pulled me into a hug.

“Zayn,” I hugged him back, “thanks for doing this,” I added before pulling away and taking the seat opposite him.

I wasn’t lost to the fact that nearly everyone in the place had watched us eagerly, ears poised as they listened in.

There was a group of teenage girls sitting twenty feet away, eyes widened in shock at the thought that they could run into one of the members of One Direction while having breakfast.

The only one not staring at us the man in a suit sitting at the booth at the front, busily tapping away on his laptop whilst talking to someone in his headset between sipping from his mug.

“No prob love,” Zayn replied smoothly, seeming undeterred in the slightest by the audience. Either he hadn’t have noticed or he was already used to it. “Had nothing planned anyway.”

“Is this mine?” I grabbed the cup that was full and in front of me.

“Yea. Sorry I couldn’t think clearly until I had a cuppa, so I ordered for both us. Hot chai latte alright?”

“Great. Thanks,” I breathed in the warm, delicious aroma wafting from the cup.

He pushed the platter towards me.

“Couldn’t decide?” I wondered out loud, eyeing the various delicacies on it.

He chuckled. “Nah, not really. The manager practically shoved this at me before I even took a sit. Said something about it being on the house.”

“Well, that’s what being in One Direction, England’s most loved band gets you.”

“Yea,” he downed probably half the contents of his cup before adding. “And we’re practically the world’s most loved band right now.”

“True,” I smiled at the easiness of the conversation.

What was I even worried about?

“So… is everything alright?”

I paused, biting my bottom lip, averting my eyes to stare at my cup before sighing.

“Hey, it’s alright,” Zayn places a hand over mine. “Start when you feel like talking.”

I forced a half smile his way, taking a deep breath before getting out, “I’m confused.”

“Confused? About what?” his tone is promptive but patient.

“Life… Love… Everything actually.”

“Did something happen?”

I stay quiet for a minute. Zayn waits. “Look, Zayn, please don’t judge or whatever but I just… I don’t know. There’s just… argh!” I shout out in frustration before burying my face in my palms.

“Does this have something to do with Harry?”

I stare at him again. “What… wait, you know?”

“About Harry having feelings for you?” he arches a brow before nodding. “Yea. Als, love everyone knew. You were the last one to come around.”

“So… all this time, you guys…”

Well that definitely explained a lot.

I get out my frustration at my naiveness by releasing a string of curses that gets me some evil glares from families there and an old granny having breakfast with her grandchildren.

“Al, relax. All that matters is what you feel.”

I down most of my chai latte.

“You like Liam , right?”

I pause for one sixteenth of a second before nodding.

“But you also feel something for Haz, eh?”

I nod again, this time flushing beet red as I wait for Zayn to call me something distasteful.

“It’s okay love. It’s alright.”

“No, it’s not okay Zayn. I can’t do this to Liam. I just… can’t. He’s been so nice to me.”

“Als, Liam will totally understand.”

“Maybe, but I can’t. Think of it. Going out with him then leaving him for Harry. I’ll be around a lot and he’ll just be hurting over and over again.”

Zayn sighed before nodding in agreement.

“And what will; become of the band?”

The question hung in the air.

“If,” I began, “Liam’s not the one for me, Haz can’t be another option. He just can’t.”

I cut him off. “No buts Zayn… Haz and I can’t ever be together.”

“What if…”

“What if what?” I wondered.

“What if Liam lets you go willingly and seeing you with Harry doesn’t affect him at all?”

My heart tore at the thought. “I still can’t do that to Liam, Zayn.”

His fingers squeeze mine. “I’m sorry this had to happen to you, Als. Really sorry.”

I smiled reassuringly. “It’s alright Zayn. Who know maybe Liam and I are meant to be after all.”

Yea,” he downed his remaining coffee, “Who knows…”
