16. The Proposal

“I... I think,” I paused and pulled my eyes up from the floor to meet Zayn's eyes. “I should have Liam drop off your homework instead.” I told Zayn as I slipped away from him.

“Harper, don't be like that.” He sighed and shook his head. I ignored him and reached toward the knob.

“C'mon...” Zayn muttered as I walked out onto the porch. “You know how I am! I tease you, bt you secretly like it.” Zayn explained, but I tried my best to ignore him. I got into my new car and drove off without another word to him.

The next day I woke up to get ready for school and insepcted the love bite Zayn left on my neck. I tried to cover it up with make-up, but just decided to wear a scarf. I grabbed my things and hurried to the car and drove to Izzy's house. I honked the horn as soon as I got there to signify my arrival. Izzy rushed out the front door with her purse and made her way to the car.

“Hey, gorgeous!” She greeted me excitedly when she flung open the car door.

“Hey, Izzy.” I replied and waited for her to get in before I started to pull the car out of the driveway.

“I like your scarf, how come you haven't ever wore it before?” Izzy asked as she pulled her lipgloss out of her handbag.

“I guess, I forgot I even had it.” I shrugged and kept my eyes on the road.

“Well, you should wear it more often, it looks good with that shirt.” Izzy complemented as she applied the lipgloss to her pink lips. “Of course it would look even better on me.” Izzy teased and smacked her lips.

“Eveything looks better on you than it does me.” I chuckled and glanced over at her. She just rolled her eyes and shoved the lipgloss back into her bag.

“Shut up, Harper, I was only kidding.” Izzy assured me, obviously feeling a little bad for the joke, I just shrugged and kept looking forward.

“Oh, did you hear Zayn Malik got suspended?” Izzy blurted with a grin.

“Yeah, he'll be back after today though.” I informed, shuttering at the thought of having to see him at school.

“What's been going on lately?! You of all people know the drama before I do.” Izzy groaned and shook her head.

“That is pretty depressing, I hardly even talk to anybody.” I commented with a chuckle.

“Yeah, until now,” Izzy remarked and looked over at my from behind her sunglasses. “I mean, you've been flirting with Liam lately, you're friends with Niall, there's something weird going on between you and Harry, and you're friends with Zayn. What's up with all of this?” Izzy asked.

“I'm not friends with Zayn.” I corrected in a low voice and turned into the school parking lot.

“Then what's going on between you two?” Izzy questioned and raised her perfectly shaped eyebrows at me.

“He just flirts with me all the time... and I refuse to return the favor.” I shurgged. Izzy rolled her eyes, obviously confused about how I suddenly became just as social as her. I parked the car and got out before she could ask anymore questions though.

“Well, whatever you did it worked.” Izzy remarked as she rested her purse on her shoulder and slammed the car door shut.

“I didn't do anything, Iz.” I reminded and kept walking.

“Didn't do anything what?” Liam asked as he approached us from behind.

“Nothing.” I answered quietly and shook my head as if to tell him it wasn't a big deal.

“Actually, Liam, I was wanting to know what she did to go from antisocial to this.” Izzy explained. Liam let an awkward chuckle and glanced away from Izzy down at me.

“Well, I... she tutors me and that's how we met.” Liam answered awkwardly.

“Hm,” Izzy breathed out and glanced between Liam and I. “Well, if you want to date Harper, and you obviously do, you have my permission.” Izzy informed before quickly turning around and trying to walk away.

“Izzy!” I called after her, my cheeks turning a light shade of pink.

“Actually, she's kind of right.” Liam muttered and gave me a tiny, shy smile.

“H-how so?” I forced out, I could feel myself blushing.

“Well, Harper, will you go on a date with me?” Liam asked awkwardly. I faked a disapointed sigh.

“I was expecting you to ask in a sweeter way than this.” I commented and flashed Liam a small smirk.

“Oh, alright.” Liam sighed with in a offended tone. Liam got down on the ground on one knee and stared up at me.

“Liam, get up!” I urged as I noticed all the passing students staring at us. I couldn't help but let out a couple giggles when Liam grabbed my hand and stared deeply into my eyes.

“Harper Lemmings,” Liam began loudly, I could tell he was trying his best not to smile. “would you dare do me the honor of letting me, Liam Payne take you out?” Liam asked, trying to remain completely serious.

“Yes, I Harper Lemmings would dare to go on a date with you, Liam Payne.” I answered in the same announcer voice he used. “Only if you stand up though.” I warned with a chuckle. Liam smiled at me widely and stood up.

“So, you will?!” Liam bursted with excitement, I just chuckled and nodded my head.

“I am so lucky! I didn't think you'd say yes!” Liam explained.

“Why wouldn't I?” I asked and raised my eyebrow at him.

“You don't seem like the dating type, I guess.” Liam shrugged and rested his arm on my shoulders.

“Well, I actually didn't plan on going on any dates until I graduated, but I guess I can make an exception for you.” I told Liam with a smile.

“I hope Zayn doesn't get angry.” Liam muttered as we made our way into the school building.

“Why would he?” I questioned in a low voice.

“I don't know,” Liam answered, “I just get the feeling he's into you.” Liam shrugged, obviously regretting that he brought it up in the first place. Just like that, I could feel the intensity growing, both of us becoming awkward.

“Sorry...” Liam apologised quietly.

“What for?” I asked and stared up at him.

“I think I made things awkward.” Liam explained as we walked down the hall. I shook my head, my nose slightly crinkled up.

“Nope, but I should heading to class. I'll see you later, Liam.” I promised and took off towards the classroom.

When I made it to the classroom I was about to step in until Harry grabbed my arm an pulled me down the hallway to talk to him.

“Harry!” I shouted and shoved him away.

“Harper, I need help.” Harry complained in a feeble voice.

“What do you need help with, Harry?” I huffed and rolled my eyes at him.

“I don't know how to get Louis to forgive me.” Harry explained, tears brimming his eyes. I glared at him, daring him to start crying so I could go off on him another time.

“Harry, I've never even been in a relationship. Stop coming to me with your problems. We are not friends.” I spat and turned away.

“Harper, please.” He begged and latched onto my wrist again.

“Stop... touching... me.” I demanded through gritted teeth. Harry nodded slowly and let go of me.

“I just really wish you would help me. You're one of the only ones who know about Louis and I.” Harry sighed sadly.

“You want my advice?” I asked and stepped toward him. “Here it is: Do not call your boyfriend a... you know what! Also, don't keep your love for him a secret, you should want the whole world to know.” I told him before turning away, by the time I made it halfway back down the hallway I could hear Harry's voice ask yet another question.

“What about my dad?” He called down to me.

“If he doesn't accept you for who you are then what kind of father is he anyways?” I pointed out, before I continued walking down the hall to my first period class.

After my class was over I stepped out into the hall and was practically jumped by Izzy.

“I heard Liam proposed!” Izzy shouted slammed me up against the lockers. I snorted and shook my head slowly. The way rumors travel around this schol is ridculous.

“Well, I think you found news that you know about before I do.” I chuckled.

“So, he didn't?” Izzy confirmed in a relieved voice.

“Obviously,” I remarked and slid out from under her. “he just asked me on a date.” I shrugged.

“Ugh, seriously if you said no I'll c-” I held up my hand to stop her from continuing with her lecture.

“I said yes, Iz.” I interupted in a calm voice.

“Really?! No way?! When is it?! What are you wearing?! I better help you with your hair and clothes, because you'll be totally lost without my help! I mean you guys went to that party together, but that didn't count as a date!” Izzy ranted excitedly.

“Calm down, please don't make a big deal about this.” I pleaded.

“I have to give Liam the 'talk'.” Izzy explained and gave me a smug smirk.

“Liam, doesn't need the 'talk'. That's the whole reason I said yes to him. I have faith that he won't try anything like that.” I contered.

“You never know.” Izzy pointed out.

“You aren't even friends with him. Please don't talk to him.” I begged.

“Oooh, look there he is.” Izzy giggled and looked down the hallway. “Liam!” She yelled loudly. Liam brought his head up quickly and smiled whe he saw me. He rushed towards me and Izzy.

“What's up?” He asked when he made it over to us.

“I heard that you are taking my best friend on a date.” Izzy stated and gave him a look.

“You heard right.” Liam nodded and glanced over at me.

“Well, it looks like I need to give you a talk on how to treat my girl.” Izzy said and gave Liam a warning look.

“No, Iz, that's okay!” I blurted and smacked her arm lightly.

“Yeah, I'm not sure I'm up for that talk.” Liam muttered with a chuckle.

“Whatever, you are getting the talk.” Izzy muttered with a teasing grin before walking away slowly.
