2. Chapter 1

Chapter 1:

I never pictured it this way.  My life seemed to be a 1,000 piece puzzle that just got destroyed, pieces everywhere, as I try my hardest to get myself together again.  All I know to do is drive and not look back.  I needed to get away, far away, from all of the darkness behind me.  It didn’t matter where I was going.  I really didn’t care, as long as it was away.  The longer and farther I drove the clearer my mind became and the freer I felt.  When I left my small, little town it was quite late and I drove straight through the night.  As the sun rose, I decided I had better stop soon.  I got off the next exit I saw.  “London” is what the road sign read.  Something felt right about this place.

As I came across this marvelous city, it was like I was waking up from a bad dream.  This beautiful place seemed like the perfect dream to have after the horrific nightmare that haunted my past many miles behind me now.

I kept driving until I reached a little shop. It was an old fashioned bakery that sat on the corner of a street I had randomly turned down.  The smells were drifting out the door as I stepped out of my car.  As I wandered out of my car and toward the little bakery, I paused and looked in the glass window. God, I looked awful. Mascara and eyeliner were all over my eyes. I looked like a panda with the dark smear. My clothes were crumpled and my face was red and swollen from crying. I sighed and tried to help my image what little I could before stepping inside. I walked in and was greeted by two old ladies. One was tall and thin and looked sour. The other, was fat and small with hair the colors of salt and pepper.

She smiled up at me and exclaimed, "Well hello dear! How are you! It's a bit early to be driving isn't it?  Don’t teenagers normally sleep until noon nowadays?"

I glanced up at the clock. It was nearly 6 in the morning.

"What were you doing last night eh? I suppose you were at a party, fell in love and went back to his place then he left you this morning. God, I hate teenagers. All the sa-" the tall one said before being cut off by the small one.

"Oh shhh you. What would you like?" She said to me.

I picked up a cupcake from the counter and scraped together what money I had.  I passed what change over to her.

“I’m sorry,” I said.  “I’m new here and I sort of left in a hurry. Is there any way I could come back and pay the rest later?”

The two ladies looked at each other for a moment before looking back at me.

The small one shot me a sympathetic look before saying, “We’ve been looking for someone to help us out around here on Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s if you’d like to come in.  That is, if you were looking for a part time job, since you’re new to town and all.”

I considered her offer carefully.  I didn’t really see why it would be a bad thing. After all, I was in need of some sort of income.

“Sure.  That sounds great,” I replied.

“Great! You can start this Thursday.  I’ll show you how to make all of the breads and pastries and I’ll teach you how to run the register.  Before long, you’ll be a master!”

"Thanks." I mumbled and walked back to the car.

After getting in my car and tossing the cupcake into the passenger’s seat, I realized I had no idea where to go.  While taking in the city and glancing around as I drove, I came across a small university.  I grabbed my bag and headed inside to take a look around.  Upon entering, I saw numerous drawings, paintings, photos, and so much more. The colors were magnificent and the images captured were breathtaking!  I found myself getting lost in the work on the walls as I wander farther and farther down the halls admiring all of the different pieces of art.  I was quickly snapped out of my trance as I heard the sound of a guitar playing from inside one of the rooms I had recently walked by.  As I approached the room, I heard this angelic voice coming from inside the four walls of the room.  I snuck a little peak in the tiny window on the door, only to see a very cute, light eyed, blonde haired boy sitting in a chair as he strummed and sang.  He was amazing.  I listened for a few more moments until he abruptly stopped.  I noticed four of his friends come in the room with him.  I quickly left and headed back outside before I was spotted and seen spying.

While stumbling for my keys I stopped half way to my car as I noticed a reflection in the window. My heart suddenly started racing, my mouth dropped and I had goose bumps, realizing there was somebody behind me.  I froze as I felt the hot breath of the person hit the back of my neck. I shut my eyes so tight that I nearly fainted.  I prayed that it wasn’t him.  I turned around slowly facing the person to my rear. I opened my eyes and my heart dropped in relief.  It wasn't him.  It wasn't Vlad.  Instead, I was surprised to see the blonde headed guy from inside standing there showing off his braces with his immaculate smile.  A tall, curly head boy, a nearly bald head boy, a dark head boy with glasses, and a brunette boy wearing a striped shirt stood behind him. They must have been the four from earlier.

I smiled politely at them before getting back in the car and starting the engine.  Before I could even move the blonde headed boy knocked on my window.  I quickly wiped my eyes of the moisture that collected there from being frightened before rolling it down and nodding at him.

“Hi, I'm Niall.”
