Hiding in the Shadows

My name is Dani and I am almost 20. When I was little, I was marked above my collar bone. Everyone says that it's aliens, and so does my boyfriend Pj. He has the same mark but it's on the knuckle of his thumb. My best friend Bo has been here for her whole life too and is still single. This is my story.

Pj's POV

Again she slipped away from me. Her perfect glowing eyes shut. I clung to her lifeless body. Her mark was glowing brighter than ever. I lied her on the bed, with her shirt pulled over her mark so I could see her it. In a hurry to save her, I ran next door to get Elias and Bo. Quickly, I opened the door to find them watching a movie. Bo could tell by my complete hurry that something was wrong. She pulled away from under Elias' arm and sprinted out the door and into our room. "Dani!" She shrieked at the sight of her mark glowing to almost a blinding light. Dani was lying perfectly straight on the fluffy white bed. Elias was behind Bo with arms holding onto her. The light coming from Dani rose in brightness. "Cover your eyes!" Elias yelled and pulled Bo to the ground hiding their eyes. I did the same. It was so bright I could see it through my eyelids. It would've blinded anyone who didn't cover their eyes. Then it went dark again. I stood up and looked at the girl lying there. My girl. My Dani. She was gone. All that was left was her lifeless, motionless body. Pale skin, gold eyelids, dark lashes, long curly blonde hair. But her mark was gone. Slowly snowy white skin covered the rest of her body.

Dani's POV

Worst pain imaginable. Burning all over. The mist inside me turned to fire. Leaving my charred remains. Nothing left. My charred ashes was all left of me. Then the white and red flooded the black scenery. The cherry blossoms that I saw through my bedroom window in the facility, blurred memories of my family, my sister, my father, my mother, and Pj. Bo and Elias flashed through my thoughts but it was mainly Pj. All those memories faded away into the white. All of the white was now spotted with red bubbles. The burning fire that was the mist was all over me. I couldn't stop it nor control it. That once freezing mist was now scorching me from the inside out. All of the white turned to red, blood red. It started to rise in color, turning to pink then very light pink, then white. It slowly bleached out the red and the burning stopped. I knew what had happened. I was one of them. The one who couldn't escape. The golden eyes. Perfect beings. They took me and the longer I had it, the closer I got to being one of them. Now I was. Different. Always was, always will be. Those people I saw, they were called immortal. Not vampires, just immortal. Still the me they claimed.

Pj's POV

Her perfectly snowy skin was almost the color of the bed. I sat next to her on that bed for the whole four days she lied there. My face in my hands. Everyday I'd have Bo sit by her while I showered. Bo would cry every once in a while when she'd look at Dani's cold lifeless body just laying there. "You'd think if she was dead the smell would be overpowering or at least noticeable and she'd look a lot less flawless by now." Elias said. Bo looked at him confused. "What do mean?" She asked with tears breaking the question. "You think she's still alive?" I asked, knowing it was impossible. There was no pulse. "There would be some sort of a scent if she was dead." She was obviously cold to the touch. Ice cold, the type that would send shivers down your spine.

Bo's POV

Elias was considering that Dani might of still been alive. I didn't know if I believed it, yet he knew so much about this. But the mist that would surround her once in a while completely went after Pj and I, but not Elias. Like he had some sort of control over it. He was mysterious. Everything I thought I knew about him changed the night he told me he loved me. He didn't talk much either, just would have his arm around me and occasionally whisper things to calm me down. That night, we decided to go back to our room. "Elias?" I called from the window seat. He had gotten out of the shower and I guessed he was getting dressed. "Yeah?" He asked as he walked out wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I got up and walked over to him. We were so close my forehead was against his chest (I was looking down). "You really think she's still alive?" I whispered into the sound of his perfectly even heartbeat. He took his arms from around my waist and used one of his hands to lift up my chin. "There's a possibility." He soothed as he stared into my eyes. He leaned down and kissed my lips slowly.

Dani's POV

The burning was still strong, but less. Soft songs that Pj would play on the piano back at the facility played over and over again in my mind as my entire life went through my head. All of my birthdays, special memories, and holidays. When Pj asked me to be his girlfriend, our first kiss, everything. Then the burning stopped. Perfect white was again in my vision with the red bubbles.

Pj's POV

Her finger moved. I jumped up and ran next door to get Bo. I opened the door and called her. She led Elias out the door and into my room. "She moved?" Elias curiously asked. "Her left finger." I replied.

Dani's POV

I could hear voices. Ones that I recognized. Elias' and Pj's. I couldn't hear Bo though. Was she alright? Did they get her too? I felt fine and I wanted to know where Bo was. I could hear three people's shallow breathing and faint heartbeats. I opened my eyes and stared about me at the little dents in the wood ceiling.

Pj's POV

Her amber eyes opened. Perfectly. The iris was a golden/amber with a bold black outline. Gold eyelids, dark lashes, perfect dark red lips. And she was one. The same as the people I'd see as a little boy. The ones she saw. The ones Bo and Elias saw. The immortals that couldn't escape the mist once it was in them. My Dani was one of them.
