2. The Sorting Ceremony

I stared at Professor Hundlelorp with utter admiration. Since replacing Dumbledore over 20 years ago, everyone was unsure whether he would be able to follow in his footsteps and provide the love and dedication to Hogwarts as Professor Dumbledore had. My sister had told me many stories about the legendry headmaster and the famous plaque on the wall dedicated to him. From what I had heard, Professor Hundlelorp didn't disappoint and was a wise, intelligent and kind wizard with plenty of knowledge and astuteness.

"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"

I smiled to myself, already knowing the traditional speech the headmaster gave in honour of Professor Dumbledoor after my sister had told me and my mother on severeal occasions.

"Now let us begin with the sorting ceremony. First years, please gather in an orderly way and await for your name to be called out. We have four houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. These houses will become your family while you are at Hogwarts and I hope you will do them proud".

I felt my heart beat faster and my hands goes clammy. This was the moment that I'd been waiting for all my life. My great, great, great, great Grandmother had started off the tradition. The Roston family name had been in Hogwarts registers for centuries. I knew I had to continue that line. I wanted my children’s children to carry it on after me. But there was one decision that had to be certain. I had to be put in Ravenclaw.

My Grandmother had been the Ravenclaw house captain back in 1956 and my mother had followed in her footsteps. My sister although not house captain, was a well spoke of Ravenclaw member and naturally it was expected I would be to. After all, I was everything Ravenclaws were expected to be: intelligent, witty, wise, creative and determined. My mother had already brought me a wand with RR engraved in the wood, standing for Roston Ravenclaw.

I waited with baited breath as Professor Landasee, the deputy head, called out the list of names alphabetically. As it got closer and closer to the letter R I suddenly found it hard to swallow and looked around for Ali to distract myself , then I realized she had just been called to the front. The sorting hat was placed upon her head and her pale face looked lost beneath the heavy material as she bit her lip nervously.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart",
the hat said then he paused.

"Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and
learning,
Will always find their kind. Yes, I think Ravenclaw!"

There was a loud cheer from the Ravenclaw table as the house captain stood up and firmly shook Ali's hand before handing her the blue and white tie which she put on proudly before sitting down beaming.

"Please let that happen to me", I begged silently, "Please let me be put in..."

"Hayden Roston", the professor read out interrupting my thoughts and I shakily made my way to the front and sat down on the stool. The hat felt heavy as it was placed on my head and my heart seemed to have doubled its normal pace.

"Very interesting to read", the hat said slowly, "Very interesting indeed".

I wasn't sure I liked the sound of that very much. I had hoped it would be a quick decision, the hat would be pulled off as I joined the Ravenclaw table, my rightful place.

"I see many things inside this head,

Which may cause my decision to be led,

To an unexpected point of view

As to what lays in store for you".

"I see a wise young mind that is loving and kind,

yet there is something else to be restored which cannot be ignored,

Perhaps in Slytherin, you'll make real friends,

Those cunning folk use any means to achieve their ends".

"No", I begged silently, "Anywhere but there".

"I think I am right in declaring that,

Young Hayden will disagree with the sorting hat,

Although it may seem strange to occur,

Slytherin is the house for her".

I felt the hat being lifted off my head and a round of applause from the far table where a sly looking boy stood up and nodded at me. I felt the Professor put a hand on my shoulder to urge me forward but I sat there in shock trying to take it all in.

"There must be some mistake", I stammered, "I should have been in Ravenclaw".

"The hat doesn't make mistakes", Professor Landasee replied, "He knows things that our minds aren't capable of".

"Please, I know it is a mistake", I protested but the professor was already onto the next name and I had no choice but to join the Slytherin table.

I glanced at Ali when I walked past but she didn't even look at me. I didn't blame her, after all, who would want to be friends with a Slytherin?

I sat down on the end of the bench as the sly looking boy thrust a green tie in my face. I couldn't bring myself to put it on, after all I was sure this was all a big miss understanding. I had to be in Ravenclaw, it was where I belonged. And even if for some strange reason, I wasn't placed in Ravenclaw, why had I put in Slytherin? I wasn't sly, manipulative or scheming. What had I done that was so dreadful to deserve this?

Then I remembered the words the hat had spoken which played on my mind as we left the main hall and retreated to our common rooms, "yet there is something else to be restored which cannot be ignored".

That was when I knew, I had to find out what they meant.
