3. Chapter two

I was walking from my school to Riley’s, it wasn’t far. I finally got there, but I wasn’t seeing Riley anywhere. Since everyone was already outside talking and texting, I thought that Riley would appear soon. So I just stood there, waiting. I sighed and looked around. There she was, walking with another girl. I supposed that would be Zoey, her best friend. Suddenly, a blond girl with green eyes walked towards me and said:

“Cameron! Hey!”

I didn’t recognise her at first but then, it was so clear. She was Diane.

“How are you?” I asked politely.

“Great. I hadn’t seen you in a long time.”

“Yeah, I know. Two years, right?”

“Yeah," she said. Then she took my hand and started playing with my fingers. “So, what brings you here?”

“Actually, Riley Brooks. We have a job meeting," I said.

Her smile disappeared. She looked upset, but she managed to pretend she was okay. “Are you guys, like, dating?” she asked.

“No, not at the moment," I answered.

“Oh, cool," she said, looking pleased. “Hey, I have to go. But, call me?” she said as she was walking backwards.

“Um...” was all I could say. I was really confused. She looked at me with a mischievous smile and then got into a car. “I’d rather not to,” I whispered as she drove away.

Then I turned and saw Riley and her friend, so I started walking towards them. When I arrived, Riley introduced us. When Riley was saying goodbye to Zoey, I looked at a bench that was in front of us, and a tall guy with brunette hair and light brown eyes was looking at us. I ignored him and Riley and I got going.

We were walking to the shop, and I wanted to talk to Riley, but I just kept analising all this Diane situation. Why was she holding my hand, and why had she told me to call her? After all, she was the one who threw everything away between us.

"So, who were you holding hands with?" I heard Riley's voice bring me back to Earth.

"What?" I asked, pretending I had no idea what she was talking about.

"Yeah, at school," she said. How did she know? Had she seen us?

"Oh, yeah... It was Diane. I think you know her," I said, trying to act cool.

"I do. She changed school two years ago," she explained.

"She told me she would change school, but she never told me which one," I tried to change the subject.

"Why do you know her?" she asked persistently.

"She..." What was I gonna say? I didn't want her to find out about us. "She is, um, we used to date," I had to confess.

"Oh. Why hadn't you told me so?"

"Well, it's something I'm not very proud of."

"Oh..." She didn't look very pleased.

"I was surprised to run into her, actually," I didn't want her to think I still liked her.

"Do you still like her?" she asked. I wanted to die.

"What? No! No," I hurried to answer.

"Why were you holding hands with her?"

"She's the one who held my hand," I tried to explain.

"I think she likes you," she said.

I think so too, I thought.

"Perhaps, I don't think so," I said, and looked away. I didn't know if there was something in my eyes that would betray me.

We didn't say a word the rest of the walk. I was too distracted. I kept wondering why Diane had told me to call her. She's not that type, usually guys fall for her, she doesn't fall for guys. I looked at Riley, she looked distracted too. I started to think that she was connecting the dots, and I was worried, to be honest.

After the talk ended, Cameron asked me if I wanted to go for an ice cream, and I agreed.

We got to Ben & Jerry's, Cameron ordered banana & chocolate ice cream, and I ordered cookie dough ice cream.

We sat down and started talking. I had totally forgot about all this Diane thing, and I was having a good time.

"I'm gonna get some napkins," Cameron said. "Do you want something?"

"No, I'm good, thanks," I said smiling.

He stood up and went to get some napkins. He had left his phone on the table, and suddenly I saw the screen read "Diane calling". Cameron asked me to answer it, so I did.

"Who is this? Riley?" She asked.

"Yes," I said shyly. She hung up, and Cameron asked me who it was.

I didn't want him to know she had called, so I just answered "Zoey", and suddenly felt my phone buzz.

"Yeah, she told me to answer my phone. It was on silent," I lied and hurried to delete Diane's call register.

I took out my phone and I had recieved a message, from Diane. Swell.

I was walking back to the table, when suddenly, when I was passing behind Riley, something caught my attention. Something in Riley's phone. A message from Diane. It read "Leave Cameron alone".
