On the day of Emily Lilac's fifteenth birthday, her father gives her a purple amulet - a lilac amulet – an ancient relic of her family. When she puts it around her neck, her world, her life changes.
She discovers that she is not human. And neither is everyone else.
She is part of the new generation of Psychics in a world of monsters. She is one of the only, one of the rarest species in existence and she is the key to ending the war between the two most powerful species around.
And in the midst of it all, there is a love. A Gravern and an Eternal come together, set apart because of the war, and must keep down in fear of death.
So Emily fights: not for the Eternals from the sky; not for the Graverns from the ground; but for the love that her friends share.

27. Request

It is time for you to grow up.

“No it’s not!” She shouts again at the sky. “It’s not my time. I still have stuff to do! Give me another year, please?”

Miss Lilac.

“A month?”

Miss Lilac.

“A week? Anything? Please, just give me a day. Just a day is all I need!”

Miss Lilac.

“Ah! Stop saying that! Say something different!”

Miss Lilac.

“Shut up!” She picks up a small stone and throws it as hard as she can at the sky.

Please Miss Lilac, calm down.

“Why should I calm down? You can’t make me grow up. You are going to try, so I am going to fight. I won’t calm down until you stop trying to make me do this. I’m not ready, you hear me? You hear me?” She throws a bigger stone at the sky.

Please Miss Lilac.

The stone hits the sky and -

“Emily! Em wake up, it’s break time now! Emily, seriously, before you get caught.” I lift my drowsy head which now seems to weigh a ton. Miss Doors is by the door and the class is packing up; last I saw Miss Doors was at the front of the class talking about quadratic equations. Had I really slept that long without getting caught? I look up and see another friend of mine outside my main group, Louise. Like Lucy, she is part of the gothic group but she is still quite fun. Really, they shouldn’t really be labelled as gothic because they like things like video games and ‘awesome’ TV shows. Most people steer clear of them but I know that they are actually nice people that I get along with. I wish the rest of my group thought the same.

“Uh, have I been asleep that whole time?” I say quickly packing up my maths equipment.

“Yup, you were out cold. I let you sleep because I remembered you saying that you were tired. Anyway, Miss Doors is never going to catch you sleeping, is she? I swear she falls asleep at her desk sometimes as well!” Louise laughs. She grabs my clarinet off the floor as I start to walk off without it.

“Thanks for waking me up, and for letting me sleep! Luckily you woke me up then.” Good thing she had saved me before I got to the worst part of the dream, or else I would have screamed in my sleep, and that would not have gone down well.

“No problem, that’s what friends are for!” As she says this I feel guilty I can’t spend more time with her.

“Anyway, I’ve got to go,” I look around the busy corridor before whispering to Louise “Tom Woodworth’s about to ask Naomi Williams out!”

“Oh my god, really? This is so cute!” She says excitedly. “Permission to tell people?”

“Not yet, once you hear that she said yes. I’ll text you, how about?” I want to keep it a secret to save them both from embarrassment.

“That’s fine! Aw, this is amazingly adorable, they go together so well!” I smile at her, and I then yawn. I’m still tired, but that sleep did me some good!

“I know right? I helped set them up, I’m so proud!” I reach the end of the corridor, which has the door to drama right next to it. “Anyway, I’ll text you about how it goes. See you later!”

“Bye! I’ll look forward to it!”

In the drama room, I take Bella and Alice aside as soon as I could.

“Oh my gosh, I really need to tell you guys something, quickly!” I say, looking around to make sure no-one, including Naomi, is listening to us, and also to check that Tom hasn’t already entered the room.  Alice immediately looks interested as I say this, while Bella looks incredibly worried about what I might say.

“Has something happened? Something’s happened, oh god what’s happened?” Bella starts to panic. I quickly try to calm her down.

“Don’t worry Belle, nothing bad has happened. Seriously, this is the opposite. You are going to be really happy about this news.” Her Elfish face is a mixture of relief and sheer excitement like Alice.

“Oh my god, Emily has got major gossip!” Alice says. “We better not have heard this already. Spill!”

“You won’t be disappointed my friends. I, ahem, we have been waiting for this for a while. Well, it was only a week but still, it’s a while.” I say, watching their faces tighten and their eyes look as if they could explode at any second. “Okay, I’m just going to be blunt, say it straight. Are you ready?” They both nod desperately. “Okay, here we go... Tom’s going to ask Naomi out this break time!” Bella and Alice both let out an extremely girly scream.

“Oh my god!” They both shout at the same time.

“No way! He can’t be asking so soon after we started trying to get them together, how did you do it?” Alice quickly asks me.

“I just told him they would make a really good couple...”

“Which they totally would.” Bella butts in.

“You mean they will be!” Alice remarks.

“Shut up you guys,” I scold them “let me finish my story first before we comment. I know it’s exciting for you! Anyway, he agreed and admitted he liked her! Then I revealed to him that Naomi likes him too and he looked so happy, so he decided to take the plunge and ask her out today!” Alice squeals again.

“This is going to be amazing!” She says. I suddenly see Tom enter the room out the corner of my eye. He looks nervous but confident, as he has brought Antony, Cory and another boy he’s friends with called Will Harvard, who is a very attractive Sprite.

“Guys, Tom’s here! Come on, let’s act natural, I’ll say hello to him.” They both grin like the Cheshire Cat and nod, so I take the lead and walk back towards our group. When I reach the circle Tom gives me an uneasy smile as Antony practically shoves him towards us.

“Don’t worry, it’ll be fine!” I whisper to him with a smile. He smiles too, and blushes a slight pink.

“Hey Tom, how are ya?” I ask him casually.

“I’m alright thanks. Anyway, I need to talk to one of you.” He says quickly, immediately scanning the circle for Naomi. Today she’s tied her pale green hair into a long wavy ponytail, which frames her face well. She’s looking straight at Tom and turning strawberry pink, and when he turns her way she immediately turns to look at Bella for comfort.

“Naomi?” The sound of her own name surprises her, and she looks up at him. He reaches out his hand to pull her up. I look at Alice in excitement. It’s finally going to happen!

“Look, I’ve known you for a while, and we are pretty good friends.” He says, partially taking my advice. Naomi gives a surprised smile, and the rest of our group looks at them in awe. We all know what’s coming. “I like you. I mean, not just friend like, but, urm...” He begins to mess up and get nervous. I feel so bad for him in that moment, but luckily Naomi understands.

“It’s okay Tom, please carry on. Say what you’re going to say.” Naomi says, and Tom blushes.

“I just, I just think that it’s time we stopped being friends and we started being more than that. I want you as more than a friend Naomi; I want you as a girlfriend.” We, boys and girls alike, let out a chorus of ‘aw’s as he says this. He is being so cute!

“So please, Naomi, will you grant me this request?” She looks him in the eye and grabs his hand.

“Of course Tom, I will.”

They smile at each other.

Cory shouts.

Alice squeals.

We all cheer.

They both kiss.
