Lilac

On the day of Emily Lilac's fifteenth birthday, her father gives her a purple amulet - a lilac amulet – an ancient relic of her family. When she puts it around her neck, her world, her life changes.
She discovers that she is not human. And neither is everyone else.
She is part of the new generation of Psychics in a world of monsters. She is one of the only, one of the rarest species in existence and she is the key to ending the war between the two most powerful species around.
And in the midst of it all, there is a love. A Gravern and an Eternal come together, set apart because of the war, and must keep down in fear of death.
So Emily fights: not for the Eternals from the sky; not for the Graverns from the ground; but for the love that her friends share.

16. Mother

I walk downstairs kitted completely new clothes. I’m wearing blue jeggings Tina gave me, cow print socks Emma and Laura got me, a quirky David and Goliath t-shirt that Naomi gave me and a pair of lilac converse trainers from Auntie Sarah and Uncle John. My mum smiles at me as soon as she sees me.

“Aw Emily, you look so grown up! I’m so proud of you!”

“You mean, you’re proud of me for surviving this long. Thanks mum.” I say sarcastically. My mother laughs.

“You always put a damper on things Emily. Just enjoy things for once!” I nod and smile. “Anyway, I’ve told you to dress comfy for now because I’m letting you take charge of this house.”

“What?”

“That came out wrong. What I mean is that you can do whatever you want – well, within reason – for the time being. Later you get to dress up all fancy because we’re going out to dinner at your favourite place!” I gasp.

“Red Roses?” Mum nods, smiling. “But that place is so expensive! I’ll feel bad for ordering anything fancy.”

“Don’t worry Emily. It’s your 15th birthday after all, you’re only getting this day once! That and they’ll probably give us a discount because it’s your birthday. So wear your giant badge, okay?” I just laugh, my mum’s such a bargain hunter but I love her to pieces.

“Thank you so much mum! I love you I love I love you!” I give her a massive hug and she tries to pick me up, however she fails miserably and almost falls over.

“I keep forgetting that you’re so big now!”

“That and you’re pregnant now mum, so don’t strain yourself!”

“How could I forget that? How could I forget you, little one?” She begins to talk to her belly. I’m used to it. My mother has been pregnant more times in my life time that most are in their entire life! It all makes sense to me now though. Psychic babies are uncommon, especially with a Vampire or Werewolf partner, I’ve been told. She must be a brave woman to go through that many pregnancies. Fortunately, and luckily for her, she doesn’t look like she has at all! She looks good for her age, 49. I suddenly realise that I might end up the same as her; trying to have as many kids as possible to try and make males, when I’ll mostly get females. My face suddenly drops, and my mum instantly knows why.

“Don’t worry Emily. Being pregnant and being a Mum is the best feeling in the world. Having a child is a gift, it really is. You don’t have to try and get boy children as many times as I have tried to get girls, but it’s not always a bad thing. You all, all of you are the best things that have ever happened to me.”

“I know mum, it’s just a little bit daunting to think of that now, you know?” She nods. “It’s just hard for me to think that far ahead, or in that way. I haven’t had a proper boyfriend you know! Just those stupid primary school romances that don’t count.”

“You’ll find your Mr Right when the time comes, whether that’s tomorrow or 10 years away. And you’ll know it too. You know the story about me and your father?”

“The first minute you saw him you thought ‘I’m going to marry that man’! I know that story well!”

“And some day that will be your story too, won’t it?”

“I guess.” I say, shrugging. “But what if I’ve met that person already? I have never thought that about a person.”

“Then it doesn’t matter. One day you’ll know they are Mr Right and they will too. It doesn’t need to be a love at first sight thing; it just needs to be true and pure. Anyway, you should get to relaxing! We’ll be going to the Red Rose in about an hour!”

“Okay, sheesh, I’ll go relax if you really want me too!” I say cheekily. My mum gives me a friendly shove.

“Of course I want you to relax! Go, now and don’t hurt yourself!” I leave my Mums room in a fit of giggles. I walk into the living room and kick Sam out.

“Mum told me to relax, so you are out of the room!” I say, and he groans like an 11 year old boy would.
