On the day of Emily Lilac's fifteenth birthday, her father gives her a purple amulet - a lilac amulet – an ancient relic of her family. When she puts it around her neck, her world, her life changes.
She discovers that she is not human. And neither is everyone else.
She is part of the new generation of Psychics in a world of monsters. She is one of the only, one of the rarest species in existence and she is the key to ending the war between the two most powerful species around.
And in the midst of it all, there is a love. A Gravern and an Eternal come together, set apart because of the war, and must keep down in fear of death.
So Emily fights: not for the Eternals from the sky; not for the Graverns from the ground; but for the love that her friends share.

12. Match-Making

When I get to Drama, everyone else is already there. Elliot, Tina’s boyfriend is there too, which is a rare occurrence. They are mid-kiss when I interrupt them.

“So Elliot, you excited for your birthday tomorrow?” I ask him.

“Terribly. Just terribly, can I have my present now Tina?” He begs. Tina rolls her eyes. They’re like an old married couple: the woman has all the control.

“You boys, all you care about are the gifts.” She teases. “We girls are better than that. We care about the parties and the clothes and the day trips.”

“Then you are no better than us!” Elliot replies and they start to snog again. I glance at Bella and she makes a retching action and gags. I laugh and go and sit by her.

“You’d be crap at having a boyfriend, absolutely crap!” Alice tells her. She rolls her eyes.

“That’s probably why she doesn’t have one. Has never had one!” Says Naomi, who has known her all through primary school.

“There was Harry Davis...” Bella argues.

“That doesn’t count, that was for a dare. He dumped you a second later!” We all begin to guffaw and Bella turns bright red.

“Can you just imagine? ‘Bella, make out with me, please? Oh great, you’ve thrown up on my shoe. No thanks!’” I taunt, and Bella jabs me in the arm.

“Shut up, I wouldn’t be like that!”

“Yes you would!” Me, Alice and Naomi say in unison.

“Prove it!”

“Okay,” Says Alice. “Look at Elliot and Tina snogging for 10 seconds without gagging.”

“Pshh, I can do that, simple.” Bella shrugs, and then looks at the couple playing tongue hockey. She lasts 7 seconds before she’s looking back at us with her hand over her mouth.

“Look at that, it’s a new personal best!” I announce. Alice and Naomi collapse into laughter and Bella gives me an evil look. She knows we’re only messing with her. That’s what friends do, we see the best and worst out of each other.

“At least I’d be able to get a boyfriend.” Bella says, and sticks her tongue out afterwards. We all laugh.

“We all could get a boyfriend if we wanted.” Naomi points out. She is almost always nice to everyone, and almost always means it too. She’s very good natured. “Alice is loud and fun and always sticks up for herself and others. Bella is incredibly clever and sweet and naturally pretty. Emily, well, you’re a Psychic for flips sake!”

“And that’s it, is it?” I ask sarcastically. She giggles.

“Of course not. You are really charismatic. I mean, before people would never approach you, but when you made the effort people would like you pretty quickly. But now people approach you because of your species, so you’re going to have friends by the bucket load!” I blush when she says this.

“Don’t leave us though. We found you first!” Alice says, and throws her arms around me to make sure no one can take me away. I blush again; Alice can be socially awkward sometimes.

“Alice, get off.” I say calmly. She blushes too when she realises what she’s done, and she lifts her arms. Bella and Naomi are in peals of laughter.

“Shall we play matchmaker?” Bella asks, seeing as we’re on the subject of boys. We all nod furiously. “Okay, let’s start with people in our friendship group, but not in this conversation. Um, let’s see, Cat?”

“Tom Wright.”

“Mark Wilde.”

“I agree with Alice, Tom Wright.” I say.

“Okay, what about...”

“You!” Alice interrupts. “Who suits Bella?”

“Ian Mayoss!” Naomi says almost immediately. Bella punches her. Bella went out with Ian in primary school, I hear. She’s really embarrassed about it now.

“Kirk Letts.” I say. She liked him back in year 8, but I have a suspicion that she still does. She blushes at his name, which almost confirms my logical guess.

“I really don’t know.” Says Alice. “I’m gonna go with Daniel Hill though.”

“Okay, what about Naomi?” Bella asks. We all are quiet for a second.

“So no one. Thanks guys.” She says sarcastically, folding her arms.

“No, it’s just hard to think of. Bella’s easy to match-make!” I say. “Ooh, I’ve got it! Tom Woodworth!”

“I totally agree.”

“Same!” Naomi blushes. We turn to each other and squeal.

“We should totally set them up!” Alice says excitedly.

“I’m too shy though, I could never talk to him...”  Naomi says downheartedly. Bella, Alice and I stare at her open mouthed.

“We didn’t think you would actually agree to it. You like him, don’t you?” Naomi nods, embarrassed. The rest of us squeal again.

“You have to promise not to tell anyone though. Got it?” We agree with Naomi, and we continue the match-making before we make plans about Naomi and Tom. For Alice we decide on a boy called Sam Evergreen who is very loud and outspoken (In some ways just like her!) And for me...

“Charlie Roth!”

“Oh my god yes!”

“You guys would be so, so, so cute!”

“No, just no.” I say. I’ve known him for way too long to think of him like that. “I’ve seen him pick his nose.”

“Every 5 year old does that.” Alice points out.

“And he wiped it on his sandwich.” My friends let out a chorus of disgusted groans. “And he ate it afterwards.” Naomi pulls a face.

“That’s gross, but I still think him.” My other friends nod, and I smile and shake my head. I decide to change the subject.

“What’s our plan with Naomi and Tom then?” The others forget me and Charlie in an instant and soon we are plotting how we are going to get Naomi together with the guy she likes.

Soon our plan is clear: I know him best, but I don’t get to talk to him that often because he doesn’t sit upstairs on the bus yet, so I’m going to talk to his friends and get them involved. They’ve got to drop hints about how Naomi is cool and all that, so he’ll start to think of her more often. Then we’ll get Naomi to talk to Tom more, but we’ll be right with her so if she gets embarrassed we can chip in and talk too. Then, hopefully it should all go to plan and then Naomi should have a boyfriend! She seems relieved that we all know now and that she’s finally possibly getting her wish.
