Lilac

On the day of Emily Lilac's fifteenth birthday, her father gives her a purple amulet - a lilac amulet – an ancient relic of her family. When she puts it around her neck, her world, her life changes.
She discovers that she is not human. And neither is everyone else.
She is part of the new generation of Psychics in a world of monsters. She is one of the only, one of the rarest species in existence and she is the key to ending the war between the two most powerful species around.
And in the midst of it all, there is a love. A Gravern and an Eternal come together, set apart because of the war, and must keep down in fear of death.
So Emily fights: not for the Eternals from the sky; not for the Graverns from the ground; but for the love that her friends share.

29. Explanation

“Dad, please explain to me what happened in here.” I say to my father as I sit on the bed in my room, which just minutes previously sounded as if it was being torn apart by a tornado.

“I got rid of the ghost. That’s all I did.” He says as if nothing happened. I sigh; if he’s not going to talk about it then I’ll need to get him to tell him the truth about it.

“Dad, I was listening outside the door. I heard the wind and you saving the ghost, you sent it to the afterlife. Can you please tell me what went on in here?”

“You heard all that?” No way Dad, I just said that I did.

“Yep, I heard every word.” He pulls a face.

“Well, I guess I have to explain now. Ghosts, when they die, are stripped of their species. They are just human, nothing to divide them anymore. They also have just one way to reach the afterlife and that is to contact a Psychic. Do you see them walking all the time? They are walking to Psychic centres. A Psychic gym is one of them. Normally ghosts walk to the closest one, although children normally go to the Psychic gyms to be helped by a young Psychic like you.”

“So why was Adrian in my room then? Why wasn’t he at a Psychic centre?”

“That’s because he felt your transformation.”

“That doesn’t clear much up Dad.”

“I know, I know, I’m sorry. I forget how much you don’t know. I go to all this effort to protect this information and when I can spill it I forget to tell you! Anyway, often when you are a ghost for a long time you can get very desperate. After a year, if you don’t reach the afterlife your soul disintegrates you know! He had been a ghost for about seven or eight months, which is a long time. He felt your transformation and came, without thinking, to your room so you could transform him.”

“Ah, so he forgot I wasn’t ready yet.”

“Not only that. Also, there is something called the Binding Law that applies to ghosts. They can enter a house that belonged to them or any of their relatives free of charge, but if they step into a house with an unknown owner to them, they get stuck. They physically cannot leave that room. The only way to get out is to be sent to the afterlife by a Psychic.” It dawns on me.

“So that’s why he didn’t leave my room! And also why you didn’t have a go at him and you let him free.”

“Exactly; he meant you no harm at all.”

“What about ghostly roommates then?” I ask, confused about what he told me earlier.

“Teenage ghosts sense teenage Psychics that are similar to themselves. There is actually a network of ghost knowledge that runs through every ghost’s brain, it’s pretty cool! One of them is what Psychic teen’s rooms are available so a ghost can come be with them. An alert would have just gone around that your room will have become available. Once they go into your room the Binding Law will apply, so they won’t be able to leave. They will stay for a week and then demand you to send you to the afterlife, that’s just how it works! You’ll get a new friend every week.”

“So how do you send them to the afterlife then?”

“I was originally going to tell you all this in the weeks to come. I will teach you how to send them on, so for now I’ll just tell you how it works. Each ghost has died before it’s time, so they all have a final wish that was never fulfilled in life. It’s our job to give them their last wish.”

“Wow, that sounds hard!”

“It isn’t really, but it depends on the person. First, they take your hand and the spirit of the living is sent through them. Then the room changes depending on their species. This man was a werewolf, he caused a tornado. Eternals cause light, Graverns cause dark, Witches cause magic the colour of their aura, Sprites cause water, Elves cause woodland things, Beasts cause fire, Vampires cause electricity, Werewolves cause wind and Psychics cause everything at once. Luckily I’ve never had to deal with a Psychic after death. Then, the ghost will tell you their last wish and you fulfil it.”

“How?” I ask, overly curious.

“I’ll tell you when I teach you.” I groan. More secrets? Not like I need any more. “Anyway, once you have their spirit will leave the Earth, easy as that.”

“That’s it.”

“Correct.”

“Oh.” I don’t know what to say to him at first, but then I think of a question. “How come my room isn’t destroyed?”

“The tornado, or whatever it is that the ghost creates, isn’t real so it doesn’t affect the real world. People can see it happen, but they can’t be affected like the ghost and the Psychic are.”

“Okay Dad, last question. When will my next ghost roommate come?”

“I’ll say...” He looks at the clock “any time between now and dinner. I’ll see you later; I need to go to my study.” He gets up and leaves me hanging on with a billion queries. I lied when I said last question; I have many, many more. God, being a Psychic is so much hard work.
