Lilac

On the day of Emily Lilac's fifteenth birthday, her father gives her a purple amulet - a lilac amulet – an ancient relic of her family. When she puts it around her neck, her world, her life changes.
She discovers that she is not human. And neither is everyone else.
She is part of the new generation of Psychics in a world of monsters. She is one of the only, one of the rarest species in existence and she is the key to ending the war between the two most powerful species around.
And in the midst of it all, there is a love. A Gravern and an Eternal come together, set apart because of the war, and must keep down in fear of death.
So Emily fights: not for the Eternals from the sky; not for the Graverns from the ground; but for the love that her friends share.

“Look at you Emily! You look all big and, well, um, Psychic like!” Joey tells me on voice chat on my laptop. He looks very different as a Vampire, yet he suits it well. So does Zack, although Zack looks much more mature. Zack always has done though, and that’s because Zack is so much more mature than Joey anyway.

“I am so happy for you, Miss Lilac! You look so beautiful and all grown up. I bet boys are already swooning over you.” He says.

“I know I would be!” Joey adds. Zack punches him.

“God Joey, she’s your sister and you already have a girlfriend! I can’t believe you.”

“Relax, I’m only complimenting my sister, you’re allowed to do that.”

“Guys, stop arguing. It’s my birthday; try to be nice to each other for once!” I ask them. They both sigh and force a smile. I just laugh and roll my eyes at them. They are both like children.

“Anyway, we called because we wanted to wish you a happy birthday.” Zack says.

“I’m surprised you did that to be honest.” I laugh and say sarcastically. They look offended and they look at each other. “So tell me about what’s up with you guys?”

“I’m doing, you know, criminal law stuff for my course.” Says Zack with a shrug.

“I’m doing his girlfriend.” Joey says cheekily. Zack punches him again. “No, I’m doing ‘Hell and Damnation, life and afterlife: cultures of belief in England’ at the moment.” He pretends to yawn, showing he’s clearly not interested in it.

“You shouldn’t have chosen history if you didn’t like it, Joey.” I say.

“I like other parts, just the teacher I have for this module is bor-ing!” I look at him funny. Both he and Zack suddenly look away at the same place, and Joey’s eyes widen. “Anyway, got to go, bye!” He says quickly and the screen goes black before I can say anything. I sigh; my brothers are probably up to something.

Next I call up Nate, my 25 year old brother. He works in business and he has quite a bit of money, although he obsessively saves it up in case of a crisis.

“Hello my little golden girl! Or, should I say, Lilac girl!” He looks incredibly happy to see me.

“Hi Nate! Can I just say, thanks for the perfume you got me!” I say with fake gratitude. It’s kind of him, but I do know that it comes from the pound store; I’ve seen it in there before.

“You are very much welcome Ems! How was your day?” The camera keeps freezing and jumping because he has bought the cheapest web-cam on the market.

“My day was very good, thanks. My friends showed me all their powers and that was very interesting.”

“My friends did the same to me, and I thought that was good as well. I can’t believe the kinds of powers you’re going to learn how to use! I think that’s the thing you should be thinking about right now.”

“I don’t know, all this is so new to me, I think I’m going to wait until I start learning to really think about it. It still doesn’t feel right to me, or feel real for that matter!”

“You better get used to it, because you’re going to be like this for the rest of your life.”

“That’s a good thing, right?”

“Totally! I can’t think of anything that’s so bad about all this!”

“Keeping it a secret from some of my friends?”

“That problem is only temporary. Soon you guys will all be in it together.”

“Is it hard to keep the secret?”

“Not really. You think it would be, but it’s surprisingly easy. Listen, I have to go now, but if there’s anything you ever want to know, you can just call me.”

“Thanks Nate.”

“You are welcome Emily, happy birthday.”

Lastly I call Harry. He answers with his wife, Sophie. She wishes me a happy birthday and then leaves to give me and Harry some privacy. Sophie is quite a pretty looking vampire; is it coincidence that she’s the same species as him or not...?

“Thank you for the boots, Harry.” I say, this time meaning it fully. I show my feet to the camera, showing that I’m wearing them. They fit perfectly and I absolutely love them! “They were quite a contrast from all the lilac things I received today. Not that I don’t like lilac, just having everything the same colour makes these boots stand out even more.”

“I’m so glad you like them Emily. It’s nice to finally have a sister that’s of the Age of Knowing that I can spoil! I can’t wait until Natasha reaches your age too. But for now it’s nice to have just you. Do you want to talk about your day?”

“Not really.” I admit. “It wasn’t particularly amazing, and I have repeated what’s happened about a hundred thousand times it seems!”

“That’s alright. Mine wasn't very special or individual either. Anyway, I do have something to announce, but I’m going to wait for Will’s family gathering to say it to the whole family. I do want to tell you right now though. Are you in private?” Sophie suddenly joins him. I look behind me to check; my door is closed and no-one will come in.

“Yes, what is it?” I ask, confused and curious.

“We’re going to be having a baby!” The words seem to burst out of Harry’s mouth. My mouth opens wide in delight.

“Wow!” I say. “What wonderful birthday news! How many weeks?”

“I’m five weeks three days pregnant! If I suddenly run off, that’s just my morning sickness, don’t worry.” Sophie says. I smile at her. I feel so happy for them, but I feel a little bit angry that they had to turn the attention away from my big day.

“Wow Harry, I’m really happy for you!”

“Thanks Emily! Anyway, I have to go now; I’ll see you later, okay? Can you not tell anyone though?”

“Sure thing, I wouldn’t anyway. This is your news.”

“Thank you so much, bye!” The screen goes black.
