A Cupcake Fairytale

"Things were changing for us... and this time for good.”

Abandoned by her father before she was even born, Madison had to make do with whatever life handed out to her. She sweetened her own life by loosing herself in the imaginary world of fairytales. She was forever stuck on princesses and the sweet bakery treats her mother constantly creates.

When the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself to her, Madison realises that her life wasn't all that it seemed to be....

8. A New Addition

Eight

I woke with a horrible gasp. I had an awful nightmare that I was stuck on the streets and my money had run out. I heard Mum fumbling about in the kitchen. I assumed she was baking again and I got ready for school.

Once I was dressed I walked into the living room to find Mum sitting on the couch waiting for me.

“Madison, there’s something I have to tell you.”

I was slightly confused at first. I thought we were in the clear then. I thought that everything was okay. I hesitantly sat down.

“I’ve been keeping something from you. Something that involves you as much as it involves me.”

“What is it?”

She sighed and looked straight ahead.

“I’m having another child.”

At first I thought I’d gone deaf. Had Mum seriously said she was having a baby? I knew that was what was going to happen the minute she met Frank but I thought she would be more loyal. It felt like a nightmare that had become a reality. I couldn’t take it.

She didn’t try to argue with me or make me see sense. She just hung her head in shame. I went on and on at her about how she’s ruined my life but she just sat there and took it all like a naughty school child. Eventually she spoke.

“All I ever wanted in life was to have a proper family, a proper job and a proper life. I guess I never knew how much damage one man could do! I’ve ruined my life. I’ve ruined yours. I’m sorry.”

Sorry meant nothing to me at that moment but I felt myself soften and put my arm around her.

“You haven’t ruined anyone’s life Mum! You’ve just got a bit muddled about what’s good and what’s not. A good man made you think that your life would be better but you’ve got everything you need right here!”

Mum beamed and cuddled me hard.

“So you’ll be okay with a new sibling?” she whispered. “With the same mistake done over?”

“What’s a half sibling to the best mum in the world?”

Mum called the school to tell them that she needed me home for another shopping emergency and used some of my begging money on another amazing shopping spree. We went to a cafe. I got a plate loaded with fish and chips with a glass of pink lemonade and a trifle for dessert while Mum stomached a fruit salad with water.

Next, we went to a clothes shop and Mum bought some maternity jumpers and larger sized jeans. She said we didn’t have to worry about baby stuff till nearer the time.

I didn’t buy much because I’d already had my shopping spree and I had to think of Mum and the new baby. Things were changing for us. This time for good.
