The Selection

Phoenix lives in a world where everyone has abilities, where the Elite have tight control of her life. Phoenix resents the Elite and before she knows it, she is joining the rebellion she never knew existed, leaving behind her family and everything she had worked on for years

2. The morning

Not only was it my birthday today, it was Election day... Talk about unfortunate. Today was the day where each 19 year old (aka  myself) are scanned and chosen for their specific job which they were forced to stay in for the rest of their lives. Electio is Latin for selection as it's our world's original language, Electio day however isn't a historic tradition, it originated 100's of years ago and i had always secretly wished that i would be excluded, expectantly after last year when there was a campaign to stop it but it was dismissed and labelled as a rebellion, the members were quickly 'sanctioned' and never seen again... Although no one ever gave them much thought to begin with... Apart from me.

I had received the letter confirming that I had to go 1 month ago and I didn't speak for an entire day but they worst thing was that Robin was almost guaranteed to be a part of it; I don't want her to, I want her to pick her own future, even if I can't...

My father had to become a miner and hates that he isn't there for us more than half an hour in the morning, usually he leaves us a nice bread roll for our birthdays that we can't normally afford, it sets us back a bit but it reminds me of when my mother would bake specially for our birthdays, ti would always be something different but equally as delicious  That morning. there was a plain bread roll that we may sometimes have gotten if i brought in some extra money, i was disappointed and i couldn't deny that. Robin came running into the room smiling but when she saw the bread roll, her face dropped.

"Oh well, money has been tight this year. It was always going to end eventually  it was too much of a luxury." I said, trying to mask my disheartenment although Robin certainly didn't

I picked up the bread and found a small orange cube underneath... Cheese! We had only ever had cheese once and that was when we got money from the elite as compensation. It was fantastic! I grabbed a knife and began slicing the bread and cheese and handed a small slice to Robin and a marginally bigger slice to me leaving a slice for my father and half fro tomorrow.

My father never let us down.
