Concerned for his brother (and the world), Sebastian sets of to search after him. But he needs help.

21. XIII

It took a few seconds before she actually realised what had happened. The Queen looked completely poised, her face clean of any emotion again. The door behind them closed with a bick clong, and Lina bolted after him. He strode through the courtyard. At the gates, Melinda and Belinda were already waiting. Lina ran after him trying to keep up.

“Wait, Sebastian –please stop!”

She didn’t expect him to listen and almost ran into him, when he suddenly stopped in his tracks.

Everything felt out of place, from the twitter of the birds to the grasshoppers that played their song somewhere in the tall grass outside the royal courtyard. She looked at him exasperated.

“Seriously? You’re going to run away now?”

“It’s not running away…” This time it was his gaze that was focused on the ground, and she sighed

“Well, yeah, it kind of is. Now come on. Some Queen isn’t going to stop us from finding your brother and saving the country!”

The words had definitely sounded better in her head, and now that she uttered them, Lina realised how ridiculous it sounded. No wonder she had thought Sebastian was a lunatic at their first meeting.

“Don’t you understand? We’ll be breaking the law. If the Queen is this desperate, you have no idea what she will do to those who break it!”

Lina shook her head and gaped at him. “You’ll send me home? Send me home and give up because of a set of rules?” She raised her voice.

They both froze looked around if anyone had heard them. Lina slumped and hissed at him. “We are going to have a talk when we get back home!”

Sebastian pressed his lips on each other but didn’t argue against her. They both climbed the donkeys, and were ready to go back. Suddenly, behind them, they heard steps, and stopped in their tracks. Wran ran, his short legs carrying him incredibly fast, and soon he had reached them. Even though he had just ran, he didn’t look out of breath.

“Know that the Queen means no evil. She wishes the best for the people.”

“We know.”

Lina peeked at Sebastian. His face was like etched in stone and he was staring straight ahead. She suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. She knew she wasn’t supposed to feel like this, being in this magic country and all, but he annoyed her.

“Now, tomorrow there will probably be quite chaotic amongst the people. The Queen would probably very much appreciate if you tried to understand her decisions. After all, it will only be for a short while.”

He paused, cleared his throat and then lowered his voice for no apparent reason. “Just don’t do anything rash.”

Lina’s eyebrows furrowed and she looked at the small man with a lack of understanding. Wren moved aside, and while Lina still had her eyes on the counsellor, Sebastian lead them through the gates, and out of the courtyard.
