Riding The Wave

I'm your typical Malibu Barbie as some people call me. I live my life travelling around, and basically surfing. However, after my mom passes away surfing becomes difficult for me, the typical summer drama comes up, and I begin to feel lost within myself. I feel like I won't be able to live through this summer, until I finally let Harry get to me...

17. Part 17

The week my dad was with us went by quickly. Almost as soon as he came, he was gone again. We said goodbye to him yesterday at the airport when he left for Romania to do business. Jake and I were back to being alone and I went back to being depressed. Having Harry was great and all but…there was still a piece of my heart missing.

“Hey babe.” Harry greeted me when I walked into his house later that day.

“Hey.” I said quietly, plopping myself on the couch between him and Niall.

“Well, look who’s perky?” Niall said, nudging me.

“Shut up; you wouldn’t understand.”

“Sure I do; I only have one parent too, remember.” I sighed and nodded. I forget people have the same problems as me sometimes. That’s when the spoiled girl comes out.

“Sorry; I’m just…”

“No, I understand.” Niall said, cutting me off.   I nodded and rested my head on Harry’s shoulder.

“Why don’t we go out in the ocean; that always makes you happy.” Harry suggested.

“No.”

“Come on babe; please? You haven’t gone in all week…”

“I SAID NO!” I screamed, standing up and storming out.

“BABE!” Harry called, chasing after me. He reached me and grabbed my arm but I shook him off.

“I SAID NO! I DON’T WANT TO SURF! IT’S NOT IMPORTANT TO ME ANYMORE!” Harry looked hurt and slowly shook his head.

“You’re slowly losing yourself and you don’t even see it…”

“I am not!”

“Yes you are…you don’t even know who your mother is anymore.” Harry shook his head and started backing away. I rolled my eyes before storming away to meet up with Mel.

“Hey there…” Mel said as I climbed up the stairs to her porch.

“Hey…”

“What happened?”

“Harry thinks’ I’m different.” Mel stayed silent and just nodded. “Do you agree with him?”

“No, I’m just thinking.”

“About…?” I shrugged. “Crystal asked me to pick her up from the airport; she’s coming back for the rest of the summer.”

“Good.” I said. “When are we getting her?”

“Want to go out now?”

“Yeah.” Mel nodded and we walked to her car together.

Mel:

Bethany has changed, but I wouldn’t admit that to her. She was quieter, angrier, and she kept to herself a lot more. She was clinging to Harry and it concerned me. I knew Harry didn’t know her as well as I did so he didn’t think about it as much as me but she’s never been so dependent on a guy before. I was really worried about her since her mom died.

“Mel, turn here.” I jumped back to reality and quickly turned so I was going the right way still. “Are you okay? You seem really deep in thought.”

“Yeah I was just wondering…”

“Wondering what?”

“If you missed surfing.” Bethany went silent and turned to the window.

“No.” She finally whispered. I glanced at her and knew she did but I wasn’t going to fight it.

“How about Harry?”

“If he thinks I’m different, than no.”

“He cares about you…”

“And I care about him but sometimes I can’t be around someone I care about.”

“Since when?”

“Since my mom died.”

“So you have changed?”

“No.” Bethany demanded. I nodded, dropping the subject. I finished the trip to the airport, got Crystal, and drove us back to Malibu as Crystal chatted happily about her trip to Texas to see her family, not noticing the tension in the car.
