Changing Jake

Alex visited her grandparents in Patmos every year since the age of four. After five years, she returns, memories of past summers at Patmos filling her with excitement. But when they tell her that Eula, Yaya's old and bestest friend, has asked them to look after her bratty teenage son Jake, Alex is far from pleased. Not only does she have to cart Jake around Patmos, but she's expected to make him from a brat to a decent human being, and from what she's heard, Jake is far from being anyway near nice, let alone intelligent.
But with a boiling hot sun, beautiful surroundings, and Alec's determined attitude to life, can she do it?
This is entering into the Sony award competition so lots of feedback would be great.

6. Jake's surprising date

'Sunny side up or scrambled?' Jake cracks the egg onto the pan, his forehead wrinkled in concentration.

'Scrambled.' I flip onto the next page of my book, inhaling the smell of golden oil and morning sunshine.

'Scrambled? Ew.' Jake shakes his head. 'Scrambled makes me think of someones upchuck.'

'EW!' I wrinkle my noise, getting up and pushing him aside. 'Fine. I'll make mine scrambled, you make yours sunny side up.'

'Fine.' He grins, wrapping his arms around my waist. 'Sorry, I forgot how to be a gentlemen for a second.'

I snort, feeling my stomach flip. 'Forgot. More like never learned how to.'

'Alright, alright.' He takes a step back, looking around the little kitchen. 'So, this is where you grew up?'

I nod. 'Yep. My parents were splitting up, and I took it pretty hard. Coming here, I forgot all about it.'

'I'm sorry I said what I did about your parents.' He comes closer, laying a hand on my shoulder.

'What did you say?'

'You know. The night in the woods, by the lake. I didn't mean it. My mom didn't tell me much about what happened; your yaya told her and I think she kept most of the details to herself.'

Turning round, I place my hands on his shoulders. 'Jake, I'd already forgotten.'

He stares at me, his gaze searching my face. 'Is that it?'

I frown, taking my hands off his shoulders. 'What else did you want me to say?'

He shrugs. 'I don't know. I guess I thought you were going to tell me the details. About your parents.'

I feel my face beginning to get red. 'I didn't think I was obliged to.'

'Obliged to? Your not obliged to do anything. I thought you would want to tell me anyway.' He averts his gaze, but not before I can see the hurt in his eyes.

'Maybe, when you tell me why you were sent here, I would be able to tell you. I'm not the only one with secrets, Jake. If I open up, then you're going to have to too.'

It's midday, and I'm sitting in the shade with my eyes closed. It's not that I'm angry. Ok, I'm a little angry. But he has no right to ask me to tell him about my past when he hasn't even told me the whole reason he was sent here.

I sit up suddenly, looking towards the place where the voice came from.

'Jake?' It's a girl. She's standing on the porch with a- is that a suitcase in her hand?

'Um, excuse me?' Standing up, I brush down my dress and walk over to her, covering my eyes with my hand. Up close, I see she's about my age. Tall, with ice blond straight hair and piercing blue eyes, she looks completely out of place standing beside the dusty old clapboard house.

'Oh, hey.' Hey? She appears at my house out of the blue and all she has to say is hey?

'Hey. What exactly are you doing here?' I plant my hands on my hips, sizing her up. She's a good head taller then me, and I can't help but feel slightly intimidated.

'Didn't Jake tell you? I'm coming to stay.' She's got an american accent. Of course.

'To stay?' I stare at her incredulously, swinging open the door. 'JAKE! Get your arse down here!'

After a few seconds he emerges, looking slightly dishevelled. 'Alex?' Turning, he stops dead, mouth hanging open. 'Beccy?'

'What are you doing here?'

She smiles, her mouth stretching into a white teethed, strawberry lip glossed grin.

'You asked me, remember? Before you left, you said that if you didn't come back after two weeks then I should come and save you.' She turns to me, her eyes icy. 'And here I am!'

And with that, she launches herself on him, tangling him up in a hot, sweaty-

I am gonna kill that-

So, what exactly did happen in Alex and Jake's mysterious past?

 Who exactly is Beccy?

And why is she kissing Jake?
