There's always more than one side to every story.

1. Prologue

A woman was killed early this morning after she was hit by a train in front of horrified onlookers.

Transport Police described the death as "a tragic incident", adding that it was believed there was no-one else involved. They also added that onlookers saw the woman jump in front of the train as part of a suicide attempt.

They were called to Ramsbottom rail station near Bury, north Manchester, at around 12.35am.

Ambulance teams and Met Police officers also attended the scene and the woman, thought to be in her early 20s, was declared dead at the scene.

The station was temporarily closed while emergency services dealt with the incident and the police investigation was under way.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the woman involved in this tragic incident.

"Officers are continuing their work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident although early indications show that she had intentions of taking her own life."

The train, thought to have been travelling at around 80mph at the time of the collision, was not due to have stopped at Ramsbottom station.

We will be continuing to cover this story through the coming days.
