2. Yup, This is My Life.....

Jane's POV

“WAKE UP SISSY, WAKE UP!!” my little brother Mason screams in my ear.

“Go away twerp,” I moan as I roll over on my side, facing away from him.

He proceeds to jump directly on top of me, kneeing me in the bladder. He starts wrestling with me, and I decide instead of screaming and fighting with him, to tickle him. The echoes of his cute, little laughter filled the household. He rapidly kicked his feet around messing up my bed sheets. Then, grabbing my purple pillow, he wacked me on the head over and over. The static caused my wavy, dark brown hair to stick straight out, making it look like I had an afro. Mason laughed uncontrollably now, as if it was the funniest thing he had ever seen.

I had to admit, I have a cute little brother. He has short, shaggy beach blonde hair and chubby little cheeks. But his best feature, by far, had got to be his eyes. His eyes were as bright blue as the seas of Hawaii on a hot summer day. They glistened and shined every time he looked at me. They were by far, the prettiest eyes I had ever seen. Too bad I don't have eyes like that. My eyes are a seafoam green color. Sure, they are ok, but not as beautiful as his. Mason and I look nothing alike. Probably cause we don't have the same father, but mum didn't even give us one similar trait.

In fact, I don't even know his father. Never met him. Just another guy my mum must have hooked up with some night at the pub. That happened quiet often. My mum doesn't exactly have much of a job. She's a drunk. She wonders around all day, looking for a job and finding different ways to get money so we can afford to keep the house or get food on the table. I mostly pay for that, but sometimes she helps. At night, she works at the pub, and sometimes she doesn't come home till a couple days later. We have both gotten used to it though. Its sad that I am like a mother to my own little brother, but like I said, I have gotten used to it.

One thing Mason and I do have in common though, is a love for sports. His favorite sport is baseball. When mum wasn't home, I used to sneak him down the park a couple blocks down and I would pitch while he attempted to hit the softball with a plastic bat. I mean, he is only 4, so he isn't the best, but good for his age and the fact that he never had any lessons. He is very talented in pretty much anything. I know that boy is going somewhere.

"What do you want for breakfast Mas? I asked him.

Without taking his eyes off the tele, he replied saying, "Oatmeal please sissy!"

I poured the hot water and called him to the table.

"Would you like a glass of milk?"

"Yes please."

As I walked to the fridge, I heard a knock at the door. After quickly poring Mason his milk, I walked to see who was at the door. As I opened it, I was greeted by a short, ratty looking women. Her eye makeup was run all down her face, lipstick smeared, and hair ratted up on top of her head. She wore a red dress, slightly faded (probably because she wore it so much) and all she carried was a couple of grocery bags. I looked closer at her face, sensing something about her was familiar.

Oh god. Its my mum

"Hello Love. Let me in the bloody door!"

Her words were all slurred and it was hard to understand what she was saying. She stumbled into the house, tripping on the way in. Drunk as ever. I needed to send Mason upstairs. I didn't like him seeing her like this and I never knew if she would lash out on him. "Mason, please go upstairs. And stay up there till its time to go to school," I whispered quietly. He obeyed and went straight upstairs.

"Jason! GET DOWN HERE!" screamed my mum.

"Mom, its Mason and I told him to go upstairs until I was ready to take him to school."

"IM THE PARENT SO ONLY I GET TO TELL HIM WHAT TO DO!"

"WELL, YOU HAVENT BEEN MUCH OF A PARENT NOW HAVE YOU? YOU ARE GONE THE WHOLE DAY, SOMETIMES EVEN DAYS ON END AND NEVER COME HOME TO CHECK UP ON US. YOU ARE DRUNK MOST OF THE TIME. I TAKE CARE OF MASON AND AM MORE OF A MOTHER THAN YOU ARE. FOR GODS SAKE YOU DIDNT EVEN REMEMBER HIS NAME WHEN YOU WALKED IN! A REAL MOTHER WOULDNT DO THAT!"

"DONT TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CANT DO JANE. AND DONT TELL ME WHAT A MOTHER WOULD DO CAUSE YOU HAVE NO IDEA!," she yelled right before slapping me straight across the face.

It stung real bad, but I ignored it. I lowered my voice and tried to act more civil so Mason wouldn't hear.

"You know what mum,  I'm sick and tired of seeing you come home like this. You need to clean up your act. Mason can't live in a place like this. I CANT LIVE IN A PLACE LIKE THIS. I have to go. Mason and I are going to school."

I slowly started walking away, when she yelled, "YOU DONT GO ANYWHERE UNLESS I TELL YOU TO GO. JANE, TURN AROUND AND LISTEN TO ME! DONT YOU DARE WALK OUT OF THIS HOUSE!"

I quickly went upstairs, grabbed Mason and headed for the door, covering his ears. I didn't want him to hear her, in case she said something to him or cursed at either one of us.

"MASON, DONT GO WITH HER! MASON, DONT LISTEN TO HER. COME TO MUMMY."

I slammed the door and locked it. I doubt that she could figure out how to unlock it from the inside. She was way to drunk to do that. I sent Mason to my car while I locked up.

"JANE. YOU ARE THE WORST DAUGHTER EVER! I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL!!"

Did I really hear those words come out of my mom's mouth? Sadly, I wasn't surprised. This wasn't the first time she said something like this to me. We had gotten into fights like this many a time, but she never said I was the worst daughter ever. Something about those words hurt. A lot. Worse than her cursing at me or her screaming at me to leave. It brought tears to my eyes. How could she not want me? After all I have done for her? I am practically raising her child!! This women should be thanking me! Bloody hell, she had no reason to hate me!

"Calm down Jane," I said to myself. "She's drunk. She doesn't know what she is saying. Just pull yourself together and get you and your brother to school."

I sped walked down the driveway and hopped into the drivers seat of my car. As I started up the engine, Mason gently tugged on the jacket I had on.

"Sissy. Why was mummy yelling at us?"

"Mason, babe, she wasn't yelling at you. Right now, mummy is a little confused. She is stuck in an imaginary world and can't figure out what is real and what is not. We just need to give her some space and stay away for a little bit ok?"

"Yes sissy, but does she still love us?"

I tried to hold back tears. "Of course she does. How could she not love you? You did nothing wrong k? Don't worry about it. Lets just focus on getting you to school. Ok? I love you."

"Love you too sissy," he said, with a weak smile on his face.

I pulled up right in front of his school. He opened the door and grabbed his bright red backpack from below his chair. Before he started walking away, I shouted, "Hey buddy. You forgot the handshake!" I leaned out the window and we did the usual handshake we did before he went to school every morning. As he walked toward the entrance, he turned and waved at me saying, "Bye sissy. Love you"

"Love you too Mas."

Man, I never want this kid to grow up.
