The Silent Life of David Shatter

I'm mute. I don't talk. Ever. Comes as a shock to some people. Comes naturally to me. I can talk. I just prefer silence.

3. The Curious Incident of the Cheerleader in the Nighttime

I shook Aileen awake.
"Ugh, ugh, what?!" she murmured in her sleep. She opened her eyes. "David!"
HEY, YOU TURNED UP HERE LAST NIGHT. I typed.
"Oh... I did, didn't I? Shit." Aileen mumbled. She had forgotten, just as I had.
I SORTA NEED AN EXPLANATION FOR MY MOTHER AS TO WHY THERE IS A GIRL IN MY BED.
"Your mother saw me?!" Aileen said, rather shocked.
OH YEAH. THE WORLD KNOWS. WELL, MY PARENTS AND SIBLINGS. MY MOTHER SORTA SHOUTED IT.
"Oh.". Aileen pulled herself out of bed.
WELL?
"Keep your pants on David." she grumbled. I looked down. All I was wearing was a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a dressing gown. All Aileen was wearing was a long sleeved shirt and shorts.  She looked good. I looked like I just escaped from a mental asylum. She took my hairbrush and started brushing her hair. I hadn't noticed last night, but Aileen's mascara was a smudged down her face, as if she had been crying. As she raised her arms to tie her hair back, I saw it. A bruise on her back, just at the bottom of her spine where her shirt ended.
"Ok. Last night, Jack turned up outside my house. I went outside to talk to him like a normal person. Accidentally locking myself out. David, Jack hit me. He was so angry. I-I-" Aileen stopped. She started crying again. I went over to her, and put my arm around her and handed her a tissue from my bedside locker.
"I came here cos if my folks knew I had gone out like that and gotten beat up by my ex-boyfriend, I don't know what they'd do." Aileen finished.
IT'S OK. I'LL TELL MY MOTHER.
Aileen nodded in approval. I left the room and explained to my Mother what had happened. She agreed that it was the right thing to do.
"Get the poor thing down here for some food." my Mother ordered. I went back upstairs to fetch Aileen.
FOOD?
"Yes please." she replied with a smile. She cleaned her face and wiped her eyes, then followed me downstairs. I'm sure my family looked exceptionally uninviting.
"Who's the hot chick, bro?" my brother James asked. I gave him a playful shove as I passed behind his chair at the kitchen table, on my way to fetch me and Aileen that coffee and some toast.
"Jamie, don't call her that. She has a name." my sister Jessica piped in. "So Dave, who's your lady?"
I stopped making food and sighed. I looked at Aileen and shrugged like "What can I do?". I walked back over and gave Aileen her toast and coffee. I gave her my chair at the table, while I leant against one of the countertops.
"This is Aileen." my Mother said, finally trying to protect Aileen from my siblings. "She's found herself in a spot of bother, so Dave let her stay the night."
"Did you make second base?" James asked me. My Mother and Aileen both chocked on their slices of toast. I grabbed a magazine and hit my brother lightly in the back of the head.
"So you two, you're just friends, right?" Jessica asked. Aileen answered for me, as I had a mouthful of toast.
"Yeah. Very good friends." Aileen answered with a smile.
"With benefits?" James asked. I could kill that little shit.
"Jamie, please stop." my Mother asked. My Father had been surprisingly silent so far. He was just.....looking at Aileen. I think he couldn't believe his son had a friend, let alone a female one. When breakfast's awkwardness eventually got the better of us, me and Aileen went back up to my room. I was looking for something for her to wear so she wouldn't freeze. I got an old pair of tracksuit bottoms and an old shirt. She managed to make it look designer.
WHO DO GIRLS ALWAYS MAKE GUYS CLOTHES LOOK BETTER? I typed in question.
"What can I say," Aileen replied "Boobs make everything better."
I chuckled. I was relaxing on my hammock while she lay on my bed.
"David?"
YEAH? came the mechanical voice of my app.
"Do you believe in true love?" she asked.
FOR EVERY GUY, THERE'S A LUCKY GIRL. my app replied.
"Do you think two friends can fall in love?" Aileen inquired. I wasn't sure where this was going.
IT'S POSSIBLE. came the mechanical voice of my app once more.
"Good." she replied, rising from my bed and wandering over to my hammock, planting a kiss on my cheek. I blushed a deep shade of red. She waltzed out of my room.
"Back in a mo." she said as she left the room. What had just happened? I had just gone from the deepest, darkest depths of the friendzone to boyfriend material. Girls. Confusing.
