8. The Choice

Niall’s POV.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know you two knew each other.” Derek said, sitting down on the couch. I shrugged, “It’s not a big deal really.” Though deep down inside, it hit me like a brick. Amber had shrugged me off like I was just ‘some guy’ and she knew she hurt me. After everything we’ve been through as friends, this is what it came down to.

Derek had become one of my really good friends in the last three years since Amber and I broke up. New York was one of the places where I can just be myself, other than here. But ever since the night of prom, I haven’t thought about coming back to this place.

“She’ll be happier with you.” I said.

“Are you sure? I mean, because it still seems like you’re in love with her.” Derek said. I still was in love with her and I couldn’t deny it. But Amber deserved to be with someone that she can grow old with, have kids with, and to spend the rest of her life with.

She didn’t need someone who couldn’t age because he was a vampire. “All I want for her is to be happy and that’s all I want you to give her Derek.” I said. It was the honest truth and Derek knew it too.

Amber’s POV.

My phone rang and I picked up the phone. “Hello?”

“Hey, it’s Niall.” The moment his voice came over the phone, my heart began to pound against my chest. All emotions washed over me. It was as if they hadn’t disappeared. “What do you want?” I asked him, maintaing my composure.

It was difficult because some part of me still wanted him; a part of me longed for him; a part of me still loved him. Even though Derek made me feel better, made me forget about almost everything, I still had some feelings for Niall.

“Can you come and meet me at the beach tonight at 8?”

I agreed and then hung up the phone. I wondered what his reasoning was. After all, it was I who had ended the relationship we had. There were a lot of things I had feared when it came to us.

Later that night at 8, I borrowed Kate’s car and drove down to the beach. Why did Niall want to meet me there? That was the only question that ran through my mind and it bothered me deeply.

I arrived at the beach and got out of the car. Niall was standing near the shore with his hands in his pockets as I walked up to him. “You better have a good explain-” I was interrupted with a kiss.

Niall had turned around when I reached him, grabbing my face in his hands as he kissed me. I simply melted at his touch and rested my hands on his arms. I didn’t know what else to do. My heart was pounding rapidly against my chest.

He pulled away from the kiss as we looked into each other’s eyes. “I want us to start over. I know Derek makes you happy, and I’m going to give him a chance with you. I want a better life for you Amber, and-”

“I can’t think of being with Derek right now. To be honest, I still have feelings for you Niall. I... I came back wondering if we could start over. Arriving at Derek’s house that night and seeing you there, it was unexpected at first.

“But seeing you again made me wonder about the first time we broke up. I get that you, being a vampire, is in your nature and you can’t always fight the thirst. I understand that.”

I gently bit my lip as I looked down for a moment, then looked up at him. “I want for us to rethink our status in this relationship; about where we stand. I don’t want to rush into anything, and I’m wondering if you’ll agree to that.”

“I’ll agree.” he said. “But on one condition.”

I looked at him, confused. “Become a vampire with me Amber. That’s all I ask and nothing more.” he said.

“So this is the reason why you brought me out here was to propose the idea of me becoming one of you?” I asked.

“It’s sudden, I know. Just think about it.” he told me.

I shook my head, “You’re right, it’ll take a lot of time to think about my decision. I have a whole life ahead of me Niall. You know that, but right now, this is too much for me. I’m one year away from finishing college. What about my friends? They’re pretty much all I’ve got.”

He sighed, “You know what. Forget that I even bothered to ask.” He began to walk away and I grabbed his arm. “Just give me until the end of summer vacation. I’ll have my answer by then. I promise.”

He looked at me with his gorgeous blue eyes and he gave me a small nod. “That’s fine.” He said. I reached out and gave him a hug, slowly letting the tears roll down my cheeks. “Just let me enjoy being human first.”

I looked at him and smiled, but it was a bit forced. I leaned in and kissed his lips, giving him reassurance that I was telling the truth about keeping my promise. I felt him kiss me back as he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close to him. We pulled away from the kiss, said our good byes, and went our separate ways.

"Wait, Niall wants you to become a vampire?" Kate asked me while we were all sitting at the mall. Ashley had joined us and I kind of liked seeing my friends again, hanging out together before my final decision.

"Yeah," I paused. "I told him that I would give him my final answer by the end of the summer."

"Before semester starts? That's crazy." Ashley said.

"Do you have any other ideas?" I asked.

"Date a human, like Derek. Forget about Niall and his stupid friends." Kate said.

"Niall doesn't have stupid friends." I muttered. "Niall and I have known each other longer than I have known Derek. I feel like it's-"

"Amber, is that you?" A voice asked me. It sounded so familiar as I turned in my seat to meet with a pair of blue eyes. "Louis." As soon as I said his name, every memory about prom came back to me but then there was that incident at the hospital.

How he told me he had saved Kate and if it weren't for him, Kate wouldn't be here. Louis was dressed like his usual self, but why did it seem he looked hotter than usual? "What brings you here?" I asked him.

He sat down in the empty space beside Kate, but she moved away from him to create space in between them. "I heard Niall offered to turn you." he said. "What a bold move, but I don't think he can handle turning you."

"Why do you say that?" I asked.

He smirked a bit. "You haven't seen the look in his eyes after the incident at prom. Sure he was sincere about Kate being almost drained to death, but he wasn't the one who saved your best friend. I'll put my offer down and turn you myself."

Why was I always left with a difficult decision? Listening to Louis made me rethink my possibilities. It was having to choose between the guy I love and his best friend. "Why are you offering to turn me yourself?"

"Good bye Amber." He stood up, then took my hand and kissed my knuckles. Shortly after, he left without another word. That guy was so mysterious sometimes, and he gave me chills just thinking about it. Well, at least for now I can be human until the summer.
