6. The Truth Comes Out

Finally it was midnight. I opened my bedroom window and went down the fire safe, then walked down the street towards the direction of the park. I saw a silhouetted figure standing on the grass with his hands in his pockets. From far away, he looked anxious.

I walked closer only to see it was Harry. He turned around when he heard my movements as I ran, embracing him into a hug. I wrapped my arms around his neck, only wanting to stay there forever. "I'm sorry I left Harry." I said, looking into his eyes. We hadn't pulled away yet because for only a moment, I felt safe.

"It's my fault. I should've comforted you when I could." he said.

"You made that night unforgettable. I don't know how long it's going to be before he realizes I'm gone." I told him. Harry gave me a confused look. I didn't know how to tell him about Chris. I hadn't really gotten the courage to even speak of Chris in front of Harry or his friends.

"Let's go to my house. We can talk there." he said.

I shook my head. "No, that'll be the one of the first places he'll look. He's seen your faces, except yours. I... we'll be fine here." I said. "That night before I ran and you put my arm around me, I tensed up. It has nothing to do with you. It's my ex Chris."

"Was he the guy that was sitting with you at the table?"

I nodded, "Yeah, and if he finds out I'm here with you, he'll come after you and whoever else knows me. I don't want you and your friends to get involved."

"What about those bruises and the scars?"

"They were all caused by Chris. He..." Oh here come the water works. "If I didn't obey, or if I lashed out at him, he would beat me. It would come to a point where he'd almost kill me and I'd be unconscious for... God knows how long. He doesn't even care about my existance. He beats me like it's his enjoyment.

"I've been living with him since I was fifteen and that was when my parents had passed away. There were days when he'd lock me in my room and starve me for days. I've never gotten the courage to escape until a few months ago when he was out working.

"He says he's changed his ways, but to me, he's still the same abusive guy. It's only now when he started becoming this way. Before, he was a sweet guy. I don't know what happened."

Harry hugged me, holding me in his arms. "I'm not going to let him hurt you." he said. After he said those words, I let it all go. I let my walls down and let him see the real side of me. I was tired of having to put up walls, and now I had a reason to continue living. "You'll be safe with me, I promise." he added.

I pulled away, trying my best to wipe the tears from my eyes. "You don't know him like I do." I said. He placed his hands on either side of my face, looking into my eyes. "Aly, my friends and I are going to help you. We're not going to let your ex get to you. We'll keep you safe. You have to learn to trust me." he told me.

I nodded and I did trust Harry. "Now, I think it's best that you should go back home and pack as much stuff as you can in a bag. The guys and I will come up with a plan. We'll text you with more details." he said.

"What if the plan doesn't work?" I asked.

"We won't know until we try." He hugged me again and kissed the top of my head. I didn't want to leave Harry's arms and I knew he didn't want me to leave either. He hadn't released from the hug so I figured this was his way of letting me know that he cares about me; that he'll be protective of me; and that I know he won't hurt me.

Eventually he released his arms and in that instant, I gave him a kiss on the lips. It was the heat of the moment, but it also felt like I was saying good by. I knew that I wasn't, but it had to be done. We only pulled away to catch our breath. We bid our good byes and went separate ways.

The path back to the house was a lonely one and it seemed like it took ages to get to the house. I climbed back the fire safe, closed the window tightly, and got back in bed before Chris knew I was gone. As I lied awake in bed, I looked up at the ceiling and brought my fingers to touch my lips. The sensation of the kiss was still there. It was still fresh in my mind.

The next day I was stuck at home once again, but I did what Harry told me. I packed everything that I owned into one bag. Sure it wasn't much, but it was worth a shot. I needed to see Harry again, but I figured that Chris would catch me. I placed my bag on the top shelf in the closet and closed the door.

My door was locked from the outside, so Chris would have to unlock the door in order for me to eat. Today, I skipped breakfast. I was thankful for a bathroom in my room. I walked into the bathroom and turned on the faucet in the shower, letting the water run.

I checked my phone to see a message from Harry. This Saturday, 6pm meet us at Nandos. Bring your bag. Harry x Quickly, I replied back to him and wet my hair. I threw a bathrobe around me and wrapped a towel around my head, turning off the faucet. I heard footsteps close to my bedroom door and the door open.

I walked out of the bathroom and saw Chris standing there. "You took a shower without me?" he asked. I just shrugged, "I didn't know you wanted to join." I said.

"You know I always join." he said.

If I wanted to, I would take the lamp from the desk and hit him with it. After that, I would grab the bag and run as fast as my legs could carry me. I also fought the urge to roll my eyes at him, knowing that he would hit me if I did. "I'm sorry babe. I just feel really stressed today." I told him.

"Want me to relieve your stress? Because I can." he said, then made his way towards me. He moved so fast that he had me pinned against the wall with his hand around my neck. His face was so close to mine. His breath smelled of alcohol which meant he had gone to a party last night after work. "If I ever see you with any guy from the table at that restaurant, I will kill you and it'll be too late to save you." he said.

He released his hold and stormed out of the room, closing the door behind him. As soon as I heard the click from the lock on the door, I grabbed my bag from the closet and opened the window. I threw my bag down to the ground. I took off the robe and the towel, then made my way down the fire safe.

I picked up the bag and ran.
