9. Chapter 9

Harry and I stared at each other with wide eyes and then sprinted downstairs. Harry made it down before me since I stumbled and he was skipping 2 steps, but when we got around the corner Laura was looking out the window through the crack and there was a hideous creature out there.

"Get away from the window! Stop screaming!" Harry shouted.
Harry ran to the cupboard and loaded his gun while I pulled Laura away from the window. Laura ran onto the bed and laid flat on her face and screamed into the pillow. I think she was still petrified of zombies after the ordeal she went through when Harry and I found her.

"Did it hear her?" I asked Harry.

"I don't know, let's stay here and find out." He replied hurrying over to the window with his gun in hand.

Seconds later the monster let out a bone chilling scream and ran to the boarded window and slammed it's fists into it. It's shrieks were so loud I had to cover my hears. Harry didn't think twice and went outside.

"Harry don't go out there you'll get yourself bitten!" I yelled at him.

He completely ignored me and continued on to kill the creature. I ran to the door and almost ran into him as he stood frozen to the spot staring at it. No, it couldn't be. Could it? I never thought I would see this, but it's her.

It's Taylor.

My mouth went into an 'o' shape and I looked at Harry to see what he would do. He just stood there and stared at her. Completely stunned to see her like this. She had completely transformed since when we saw her last. Her skin had gone a disgusting white with sores and cuts all over her. Her hair was still blonde but it was incredibly dirty and messy. Her nails had grown another centimetre so she had very long claw like nails. Drool and foam was dripping from her mouth and her eyes were still bloodshot red. Her clothes were ripped in places and absolutely covered in muck. She was hideous!

Harry and I had gone unnoticed by her, we stood on the deck about half a metre higher then her and just stared at her. We were absolutely gobsmacked.

"Harry what do we do?" I asked panicked.

I may have said that a bit loud, once I spoke Taylor turned her head and looked coldly into my eyes. She had a new target now, me. She screamed and tried to climb up the side of the deck. Harry was removed from his trance and looked at me.

"Bo get inside!" He yelled.

I wouldn't leave him out here alone, I know he wouldn't be able to kill her.

"Bo listen to me, get inside!" He ordered again.

"I'm not going in there without you, your not being left alone out here!" I argued.

Harry was just about to say something but was interrupted by Taylor. Whilst we were arguing she had gotten up and fallen over the side in a heap on the floor. Harry ran up to me and aimed to shoot at her. Taylor tried to get to her feet but fell back down on the floorboards, she tried again and again but continued to fail with her flimsy legs.

"Harry just shoot her, it isn't Taylor. It's a monster!" I yelled.

I knew Harry was trying his hardest to shoot, but he couldn't. Taylor finally managed to get to her feet and stumbled towards us. I pushed Harry inside out of harms way and was just about to turn around when something heavy pushed me to the floor with it on top of me. I closed my eyes and braced myself to thump to the floor.

"Bo!" Harry yelled!
I opened my eyes and there was Taylor laying on top of me screaming in my face. She had her eyes set on sinking her teeth into my neck. I grabbed her by the shoulders and used as much strength as I could muster to push her away. I don't know what this girl had been eating, but she weighed a tonne! I started to tire and closed my eyes to prepared myself for Taylor's teeth to sink into my skin when I heard a crushing noise and Taylor scream. She flew off of me and across the deck. Harry stood before and and he kicked her in the stomach and head and aimed the gun at her.

"You get away from her, you hear me!?" He screamed.

Taylor just made a weird animal noise at him and went to bite his shin when he kicked her in the neck. I heard another crunch of bones and she fell down the stairs of the decking area. Harry stood at the top of the stairs and Taylor reached her arm out for him as if she was begging for mercy. Before she could do anything else Harry pulled the trigger and shot her right in the middle of her forehead. There was a scream and a gun shot and the whole neighbourhood went silent.

I pulled myself up and stared at Harry. He just stood there looking down at his girlfriends dead body with his gun in his hand.

"Harry?" I said quietly.

He didn't say anything. He turned around and looked at me and sighed, then he shook his head and went inside and up the staircase. I looked at Taylor. Her body lay limp on the pavement as blood flooded from her forehead. Just the sight of her made me feel sick. I went inside and locked the door and went to see Laura. She was sat in the very corner of the room with her hands over her ears and tears running down her cheeks. She looked so young but she was just a year younger then me. She looked at least 12 when I saw her.

I held out my hand for her and she hesitated to take it. I gave her a reassuring nod and she slowly took my hand and I went and sat with her on the bed.

"You okay?" I asked.

She nodded slightly in reply. I gave her a warm hug and set up the couch for her as a bed. I tried to make it a lot more comfier then it was when I slept on it but it didn't make much of a difference. I apologised to her for the lack of comfiness but she seemed more then happy to sleep on there. Maybe she didn't have anything before we found her.

"You should probably go to sleep now, it's starting to get dark anyway." I said.

"Thankyou." Laura said quietly.

I smiled and nodded and left her to her own devices while I went to see Harry. I went upstairs and checked the windowsill, no Harry there. I went into the girls room, still no Harry. I went into the master bedroom. Nope, but the mattress was gone from the bed, that's probably where Harry and Taylor got the one downstairs. I checked the bathroom and he wasn't in there, but there was dried blood on the floor. I knew that was from me, I looked at my wrists and saw the healing cuts going down my arm. I shook my head and continued my search. There was only one room left now. I walked down the hallway and stood outside the last room. I held my ear to the door and heard small sniffles on the other side. Should I go in? Or should I leave him alone?

"Harry?" I said quietly.

There was no reply except for a few muffled sobs and sniffles. I slowly turned the door handle and opened the door slightly. Harry was sitting with his back faced to me on the bed, his head cupped in his hands. I entered the room silently and stood behind him. He stayed in the same position for a period of time and then let out a sigh and started sobbing. I went over to the bed and sat next to him and put my arm on his back.

"Shhh it's okay Harry, it's okay." I whispered.

Harry moved his curls back from his face and looked at me. His red, puffy eyes stared into mine full of sadness.

"I just killed her Bo, just like that." He said.

"You didn't kill her, you saved her." I replied quietly.

"How the hell did I save her? I killed her, ended her life." He said frustratingly.

"She was already dead, but the illness kept her body alive and used it to kill others. It wasn't her who was doing it, it was the virus in her brain." I explained.

This seemed to win Harry over. I guess he just wanted to believe anything except for him believing he killed possibly the love of his life. Harry moved closer to me and wrapped his arms around me and held me close. I did the same and we stayed like that for a very long time. Every now and then Harry would let out a small cry or I would have a small sniffle, but eventually we both pulled ourselves together and let go of each other. By the time we did that the sun had gone down and it was almost dark.

"Do you just want to go to bed?" Harry suggested.

I nodded and we quietly went downstairs, making sure we didn't wake up Laura. I got changed into some comfy pyjama shorts and a loose top and got under the covers. Harry took his shirt off and got into some grey joggers that slung low on his hips. He got in on the other side and decreased the distance between us and snaked his arms around me, holding me tight. I turned over and looked into his eyes and stroked the tip of his nose until we fell asleep.
Just before I closed my eyes I saw someone walking across the room. I looked next to me and Harry was still beside me lightly snoring. It must've been Laura. What was she doing? I decided to stay in bed, I was too tired to get up. As I dozed off again I heard a crash in the kitchen and a small scream. Harry and I shot up and looked at each other.

I got out of bed and Laura was standing in the corner of the kitchen holding a can of spaghetti and the pots and pans were all over the floor again. Soon I felt the presence of Harry behind me.

"Laura what are you doing?" Harry asked.

Laura just stared at us with wide eyes. I walked over to her and took the tin from her shaking hand.

"Are you hungry?" I asked quietly.

"Y-yes..." She whispered.

I turned around to Harry and mouthed that I had it covered. Harry nodded and yawned. Soon he was out of the room and I heard him flop onto the bed.

"I'll make you something, just wait and I'll give it to you." I said.

Laura nodded her head and walked out of the room. I was starting to worry about that gash on her jaw. Was it from infected? I'd have to treat that soon. I made up a small meal on a plastic plate of tinned spaghetti and a piece of bread. I took the dish in my hand and went into the lounge room and Harry was sprawled out all over the bed. I laughed to myself and went upstairs to get Laura. She was sitting on the windowsill staring out in the street.

"I made something for you downstairs." I said quietly.

She turned her head and gave me a small thankful smile. I went and leant up against the wall next to her. We shared an awkward silence until I asked her a question.

"How did you get that cut?"

Laura looked at me. She wasn't easy to see through, usually I can just look at people's eyes and tell what they're thinking or feeling but with her and Harry it was difficult for me. They hid their feelings a lot.

"Umm, it was from a piece of metal. My uncle threw it and it hit me in the face." Laura replied.

"Where is your uncle now?"

"H-he's dead. He got killed by the zombies." Laura whispered. A tear ran down her cheek but she quickly wiped it away and ate her meal. When she was done I took the plate from her and we went downstairs. She got onto the couch and I put the plate in the bin. I wasn't completely sure what to think of Laura. She seemed like a lovely person, but I could see a streak of Taylor inside of her. A slight stubbornness or something. Maybe I was just being paranoid because her hair looked similar, I probably just needed some sleep.

I came into the lounge room and made Harry move over. He was fast asleep but still didn't resist to move when I pushed him to the side. Laura had her eyes closed but I knew she was awake. I got under the covers and checked the time. 10:00, wow it was starting to get late.

"Goodnight Laura." I said.

"Night." She quietly replied.
