31. Chapter 31

As I opened my eyes the next morning there was instantly a knot in my stomach. The thought of going outside worried me and I regret finally agreeing to leave with Harry. I looked over the other side of the bed to see if he was asleep. I saw his familiar brown curls tousled out over his pillow and his mouth was slightly agape, his breathing steady as he slept. I checked the clock on the bedside table and it read 5:30am. I decided not to wake Harry from his slumber yet because I could feel him tossing and turning a lot last night, he would probably be tired when he woke up. I hoped that his sleepiness would stop us from leaving today and maybe we could postpone our trip. The more time I have alone with Harry, the better.

I got out of bed and padded into the kitchen. The tiles were cold and I felt the tingling in my feet as my toes went numb. If we leave today it's going to be a cold drive. I opened the cupboard to find that we had no food left. I cursed under my breath knowing that we'd have to make a pit stop to get supply's, I didn't want to be in the open where we were vulnerable. I closed the cupboard door as quiet as I could without waking Harry. I walked up the stairs and looked out the window at the sunrise, it was beautiful. I had a hard time letting it soak in though while I thought of all the worst possible scenarios that could happen while we're outside. We would be in danger and in the open, I suppose when we get out into the countryside we will be more safe, there's not much life out there so the more isolated we are, the less infected.

As I was drowning in my own thoughts I felt a warm arm snake around my hips. I looked behind me and Harry was stood there in nothing but a pair of joggers slung low on his hips. My lover wrapped his arms around my waist and he rested his chin on my shoulder. I placed my hands over his and leant more into his body.

"Good morning beautiful." His raspy, morning voice said.

"Good morning." I mumbled.

Harry turned his face to me and kissed me on the cheek. His touch sent shivers down my spine but warmed my body at the same time. His touch was all I needed to bring the feeling back to my limbs as the heat of his body radiated off of me.

"We're going in about half an hour." He declared.

I frowned and looked at the floor, I didn't want to leave here. We've had so many memories in this house and I have grown quite attached to it. I sighed and looked back out the window, observing the beauty of the morning.

Harry rubbed circles in my slightly swollen belly and hummed in my ear, calming my nerves a little.

"I didn't think you'd have a baby bump yet to be honest." He said quietly.

I looked down and couldn't see my stomach through the sweater I wore, it looked normal. But when I put my hands on it I feel the small life inside of me. I smiled and look up at Harry.

"I guess they're just growing quickly then." I reply.

Harry chuckled and kissed me in the crook of my neck. I close my eyes and take a deep breath as butterflies erupted in my stomach.

"Let's get ready to go now." He said after pulling away.

I sighed and nodded my head. Soon I felt Harry's presence leave me and he headed downstairs. I moved some hair out of my face and turned around to join him on the bottom floor of the house. This was going to be a long day.

"Are you all ready?" Harry asked me as I looked at myself in the mirror.

"Yeah I guess so." I said, shrugging my shoulders.

Harry nodded his head and looked frantically around the house, hoping not to have forgotten something. He had driven the car closer to us so we didn't have to carry our supplies far down the alleyway. We'd packed our suitcases, blankets and pillows, weapons such as guns and a knife, and we were yet to get food.

I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear and picked at my fingernails. Waiting for Harry to give me instructions on what to do next.

"I suppose all we have to do is get going now." He said, breaking the silence.

I nodded and walked to the back door to the car. Harry soon followed and locked the door behind us. I don't know why he bothered but I guess it's just become a habit of his.

We sneaked out the back fence to the car parked in the alleyway behind the house. It was just the start of the day so we didn't have to worry much about walkers but we still had to be weary of them, they could be lurking anywhere.

"We'll go to the petrol station and see if there's any gas and we can stock up on food there, there's not much stuff left but it will have to do us for now. Hopefully when we get to the supermarket the other survivors will be there. If not, we'll just hang out there until they come or we can just find them ourselves." Harry explained.

I nodded my head and stayed quiet. If I spoke my voice would probably betray me as I tried to hold in tears. I didn't know why I was sad, I guess it was just the hormones that came with pregnancy.

I got in the passenger side of the car in the front and Harry closed the door for me. I watched him jog over to the other side and get in the drivers seat himself. He cleared his throat and put the keys into the ignition. The car roared to life and I forced a smile onto my face as he grinned at me, pleased with the engine of the vehicle.

We drove off down the street and tried to stay off the main roads. Harry turned a few corners and within minutes we were parked outside the petrol station beside one of the gas pumps. We got out of the car and Harry checked if there was any fuel.

"There's just enough, this neighbourhood wasn't that busy before the outbreak so there's still a bit of gas left." He stated.

I nodded my head again and closed the car door. I had an empty bag slung over my shoulder to put food and supplies in when I raided the shop.

"I'm just going to go inside and get some stuff, I'll be back in a minute." I squeaked.

Harry raised an eyebrow at me and then nodded his head, turning back to what he was doing. I stood there for a moment awkwardly before turning to go into the store. I hoped nobody would be in there.

I walked through the broken door and shattered glass cruched underneath my vans. I tiptoed through the rubble down the aisles and took everything I could see that would be useful. I hurried over to the fridges and took out bottles of water and cool drinks of any kind. I needed everything I could see. Soon the bag I was carrying became overloaded with food and torches and drinks that I could barely carry it, I should've got a bigger bag.

I stopped in front of the counter and looked at the candy arranged in front of me. It was all messed up due to the lack of care to the shop but it didn't matter, no one was here except for me anyway. I grabbed a heap of toffees and lollipops and stuffed them into anywhere I could fit them. Suddenly I heard a crash of shelves at the back of the shop behind the door on the other side of the counter. I stood still and heard a strange noise from the other side. Within a second a zombie crashed through the door and lunged itself over the counter. I screamed and turned away as fast as I could and ran. Things were falling from the bag but I didn't care, I had to get out of there.
