3. Chapter 3.

I was awoken by a smash outside. I got off the couch and slipped my old vans on and walked to the window. I peeped through the crack and saw that a zombie was outside and it had fallen over the trash can and sent rubbish everywhere. I heard footsteps upstairs and soon coming down the stairs. "Ah dammit, won't these things learn how to walk?" Harry said angrily. He trudged down the stairs and retrieved the small hand gun from his belt and went outside. I watched through the boarded window as he aimed at the zombie struggling to get back on its feet and he fired. I walked over to the door as Harry came inside. "Morning." He nodded to me and went into the lounge room. He still had bed hair but he still had that same beauty as he did when we first met. I walked into the lounge room and started folding up the blanket I slept with on the couch while Harry made his bed. "How long have you's been awake?" I asked. "Not that long, about half an hour or so." He replied. I was struggling to fold up the blanket, I'd never really been good with chores. Mum would always make my bed. "Here I'll do that." Harry moved over next to me and took the blanket from my hands and folded it with ease. "What was your life like before this?" I asked. Harry stopped and stared into space for a moment and then stood up right."Let's just say it wasn't pleasant." Harry answered.

I walked into the front room and up the stairs, Taylor was sat on the windowsill in a girls old bedroom. It had a doll house and teddies in there, with a pink rug on the floor. It reminded me of when I was little. I walked into the room and sat in the bed. "Good morning." I said as Taylor stared out the window. "Morning..." She replied. It was like her head was in another world. "Why don't we use these rooms? They have beds in them and stuff." I asked. Taylor returned to reality and looked at me and got up and sat beside me. "Say the zombies broke into the house downstairs and we were all asleep in different rooms. We would all be split up so we wouldn't stand a chance at taking them all down. Coz it's easier to be all together at once and if we need to make a quick escape we all need to be together." She explained. "That makes sense, but why don't we just move these mattresses downstairs and make them proper beds?" I asked, if we were going to be here for a while we might as well make it comfortable to live in. "Too much unnecessary hard work, we need to keep our energy." She replied. I understood now.

We were interrupted by a tall boy with dark, curly hair. Harry. Taylor smiled and went and stood beside him as if he'd saved her from being tortured by having me as company. I'd sensed that she didn't like me much. I was starting not to like her too. But we all had to tolerate each other in order to survive.

"Today we're going on a little expedition." Harry explained. "We're going to the shops to get   some stuff." "Sounds good." Taylor replied cheerfully. "Now, we only have 2 guns, so the first and last person in line get one. Which would be me at the front and Taylor in the back, seemings as we know how to handle a gun. You okay with that Bo?" Harry asked. "Yeah that's fine, but do you think you's could teach me soon? In case I have to go out on my own." I asked, I always wanted to fire a gun. I don't know why. "Yeah sure, but for now we'll have to manage with just me and Taylor as the firing squad." Harry joked. Taylor punched his arm. "Harry I don't wanna feel like someone who's just out to kill people. Whether they are dead or alive." Harry grinned showing his dimples. He really was beautiful. "Are you's ready to go?" Harry asked impatiently. "Yeah I am, uh..what about you Bo?" Taylor turned to me, it was obvious she didn't want me to come. She probably thought of me as something that would slow them down. "Yah I'm ready, lets go." I was determined to show her that I could be useful to them. Otherwise they might've rejected me and left me on my own.

Harry slowly shut the door and came to join us down under a bush by the front porch. "Everyone stay low, quiet, and follow me." Harry instructed. He crept out an hurried down the road to the next house down and hid behind a rose bush. We could hear something coming. It was big. "Everybody get behind me and duck down really low." Harry hissed. As we became hidden a large truck drove down the street. Who was driving it? As it got directly in front of us I saw an infected man sitting in the drivers seat. He had a light tinge of purple on his face, some sort of disgusting liquid was running down his face from his eye, he looked like he'd been set on fire, his skins was burnt and he had a mangled left arm. I thought I was going to be sick. I think Taylor was too because she made a gagging noise from her throat. "Love it's ok just don't look at it." Harry said while rubbing her back. It looked like it helped. She squeezed her eyes closed and took a deep breath and we continued on.

"The shops are just down the end of the street. Not that far away." Harry explained. The place was completely clear of the infected. Where did they go? They were everywhere the night before. As we got to the corner of the road I saw a gas station across the street. "Is that the place there?" I asked, pointing to the store. "Yeah, we gotta be careful crossing the street though, we might get spotted and if that happens and there's lots around then all hell will break loose." Harry replied. He looked like he was getting uncomfortable in being in the open so much. Taylor was also quite weary too. Had they been attacked here before? What was so bad about crossing the street when it was completely empty. As we got to the middle of the street I saw a figure standing at the next corner about 150 metres from us. It was a little girl. She was wearing a pink night gown stained in oil, brown hair, pale skin, and one eye. Yuck. Harry stopped and stared at her for a second then whispered harshly. "Run." He took off towards the shop. Followed by Taylor and I was left standing there. "Bo get out of the open!" Harry yelled. I ran to them. They were hiding between 2 dumpsters against the shop wall. "Did it see us?" Taylor asked between breaths. "No, don't think so. Bo why didn't you run?" Harry asked frustrated. "Uh, I didn't know. I didn't understand, there's only her. Can't you just shoot her down?" I didn't understand why it was so bad that just 1 zombie saw us. They could just kill it and move on. "I'll explain when we get home. But for now listen to everything I say and do it right when I say it." Harry ordered. I nodded. I realised it wasn't wise to disobey Harry's orders.

When we got inside the petrol station it looked like an average shop. It didn't have blood on the walls, no boarded up windows, completely normal. "Try and stay away from the windows and back door. If you see something, call out. But no screaming. "Harry demanded. "Taylor and I nodded and split up for supplies. "We can't take lots of stuff because it'll be too much to carry home." Harry added. I decided to get a torch and some batteries for myself. I needed proper survival equipment. I put the batteries in the pocket of my jeans and the torch in my belt. I looked around and got a packet of gum from the front counter and decided to have a nibble on an ice bun that was there for sale too. I was starving. I didn't know how long it had been since I'd eaten something last. I took a bite into the bun, it was sweet and creamy. I didn't know I could appreciate food like that. The bun rolled around on my tongue making my mouth water. I sneaked along the aisles and picked up a mini pocket knife and some wire. I didn't know what I would need it for but it's better to have something we didn't need instead of something we needed but didn't have. I continued my search for things and walked into Harry. "What you got there?" He asked staring at my creamy hand. I realised that I had icing all over my face and my hand was as sticky as honey. "Oh, um..and iced bun." I replied embarrassed. I tried to wipe the icing off my face with my free hand but I was only making it worse. I let out a few frustrated mumbles before Harry stepped in. "Here let me help." He chuckled. He walked back down the aisle and returned with a packet of wipes. He pulled a sheet of the cloth out and started gently wiping my face. While he did so all I could do was stare into his eyes. Once he'd finished he did the same. It was almost like a staring competition, except we weren't trying to win. Harry awkwardly coughed and looked at the ceiling. The ground soon seemed very interesting to me. "Thanks." I mumbled. "Uh, no problem."

Harry continued past me and stopped at the fridges and picked up a red bull. "Forgot the fridges didn't work." Harry sighed. He put it back and disappeared around the corner. You could see his back muscles flex when he walked. There were so many questions I had about him that we're still unanswered. While I was lost in my own thoughts Harry quickly turned back around the corner and bumped into me. "Oh sorry. Uh, I forgot to ask. How old are you?" He asked scratching the back of his head. "18, you?" I smiled. "20." Harry answered. "You looked younger then 18, I thought you were around 16." Harry exclaimed. "Well, looks can be deceiving." I sighed. That happened a lot before this nightmare. It was annoying but I got used to it.

"Everyone ready?" Harry called out. Taylor and I returned to the front of the shop where Harry was standing. "I'm good to go, what about you Bo?" Taylor asked. "Yeah let's go." I was worried about leaving the safety of the petrol station. What if there were more of the infected what if they took one of us? I never felt safe anymore. Well, not very often.

We crept outside into the street and hid behind a old truck. Taylor stuck her head out and check whether the coasts as clear. "All good, lets go." Taylor announced. She quickly sneaked across the street. Harry and I hurried after her. We sped around the corner and stopped to a halt. There was a silence as we watched an elderly woman turn to us. She wasn't infected, she was one of us. She stared at us and looked down the other turn and turned pale. "Run." She mouthed. We stayed there for a bit confused before we saw a ginormous herd of zombies run towards her. I screamed for her to run before Harry covered my mouth like when we first met. Luckily I didn't phase them, they all ran to the woman who stood there and she was engulfed in a wave of the dead. We all heard her shriek. She was continuously yelling at us to run, we couldn't see her but we could hear her. "Quick guys, lets go." Harry whispered. "Go, go, go!" He yelled while us 2 girls ran before him. We didn't know where we were going, but we had to find somewhere safe. That poor old lady wouldn't satisfy the infected for long. Soon they would be after us.

We ran down an alleyway that reminded me of my dream, I was sobbing between breaths due to the memories of my family. I was still petrified that they were dead. But I had to push that aside while I tried to survive for the moment. I turned my head and saw Harry concentrated for a ladder further up. I looked behind him and just entering the alleyway was the pack of zombies coming after us. "Taylor stop at that ladder up there!" Harry demanded. She stopped and let me go up first. "Go bo, go!" She hurried. I clambered up the ladder as fast as I could and Harry followed after me. Taylor came up last, as she was getting up an infected man in a suit grabbed hold of her leg. "Harry!" She shrieked and held onto the bars for her life. The man started biting the bottoms of her legs, hungry for flesh. Harry grabbed hold of her forearms and attempted to pull her to safety. "Bo help me for gods sake!" He shouted. I looked around and pulled some bricks out from the roof and threw them at the infected man who was feasting on Taylor. One of the brick landed straight on his face, he let out a cry and fell to the floor. Harry pulled a sobbing girl to safety and wrapped his arms around her. "Shhhhh it's alright love, it's alright." He soothed her as she wept in his arms. "I don't want to die Harry, I don't want to die." She said between sobs. "I'm not going to let that happen. You hear me? I'm not losing you." Harry replied. I know that he knew what was going to happen in the days to come. It was just a matter of time before she became a flesh eater. I stood before them, staring at their embrace in each others arms. Taylor was a wreck, ripped up shins and watery face. Harry's curls were tousled all over his head, dirt all over him, and tears slowly running down his face. Soon it would end up being just me and him. I know I didn't like Taylor, but it was still horrible to watch her die.
