Wouldn't Be A Lie

Her head was in the clouds, and his feet were glued to the ground. Playing like lovers in the moonlight, but never stepping out into the sunlight.

Sydney Holiday

Coming in unannounced

drag my nails on the tile

I just followed your scent

you can just follow my smile

All of your flaws are aligned

with this mood of mine

Cutting me to the bone,

Nothing left to leave behind

You ought to keep me concealed

just like i was a weapon

I didn't come for a fight

but I will fight 'till the end

And this one might be a battle

might not turn out okay

You know you look so Seattle but you feel so L.A.

I swam up to the surface and gasped for air. I got out of the pool, and began shivering. Eli got out and I glared at him. Sam went inside and came back out with towels. I grabbed one and wrapped myself up in the softness of it. I shoved Eli as I walked towards the glass sliding doors. He shoved me back, and Sam punched him.

"Don't make me push you back into the pool again," he threatened as we went inside the house.

"You're not scary," I said.

"You sure looked scared when I jumped into the pool with you," he said laughing.

"I was not," I shot.

"Uhuh, sure you weren't," he said.

Sam and I went upstairs and Eli locked himself in his room. The rest of the night I spent trying to get Sam to let me paint her fingernails pink. I had no luck but we agreed on a sparkly purple. It was soon midnight and we both crawled into Sam's bed and shut off the lights. The next morning I got dressed in distressed jeans and her Ramone's tee. She dressed in shorts and a black T-shirt. We walked downstairs to find Eli eating cereal in the kitchen. Sam and I got bowls and served ourselves Froot Loops. I sat next to Eli and Sam sat next to me. He nudged my elbow and I looked up to find him sticking his tongue out at me. I stuck my tongue out and ate the rest of my cereal. Genevieve needed to go into the office earlier than usual so we were left to walk to school. Sam didn't want to walk so we headed into the garage and she pulled out two beach cruisers, and Eli hopped on a skateboard. We had a race to see who would get to school first and of course Eli won, since it was easier for him to get through crowds of people on a skateboard.

We left our bikes locked up near the front gate and he shoved his skateboard in his backpack and left the top part sticking out. Sabrina ran up to him and she clung on to him. He pushed her away and she looked confused and hurt. I smiled and felt horrible afterwards. I shouldn't be happy that he's rejecting her, but I can't help it. The day was soon over and we took our bikes and rode home. We arrived at Sam's house and left our bikes near the porch and walked inside to find a giggling Sabrina and a very happy Eli. Sam rolled her eyes and walked into the kitchen. I followed her as she was getting water bottles out. She threw one at me and I caught it.

"Why don't you like her?" I asked.

"Cause, look at her. She's a slut, and my brother still fucks her," Sam said.

Eli walked in as she said that.

"She's just a friend. We've never done anything like that. No matter what you think. Sure we kiss and shit, but never have I fucked her," he said.

"Lies," Sam sneered,

"I'm not lying!" Eli said defensively.

Sabrina walked in to find the two siblings staring each other down.

"I should go," she said kissing Eli.

"For once can you leave without throwing yourself at my brother?" Sam said

Sabrina walked out of the kitchen and left, leaving only a pissed off Eli and a stubborn Sam.

"Well we should start getting ready," I said breaking the silence.

"You can't wait to see Austin huh?" she said winking.

I shrugged, and Eli scoffed. I looked at him in confusion, and he only rolled his eyes and went back into the living room.

Sam and I headed upstairs to her room, and I jumped in the shower. I got out and went back into the room to change. I put on the red bandage dress and started to blow-dry my hair when Sam went into the shower. When she came back outside my hair was straight and she began changing into her outfit.

"Straighten my hair will ya?" she asked.

"Of course," I said.

I got the flat iron and began to slip it through her semi dry curls. An hour later her hair was straight and she started to apply her makeup. I went into the bathroom and applied my own. Minutes later we were ready and we walked down to the living room where Eli and his friends were waiting for us so they could take us to the party.

"Damn, you don't look like little sisters tonight," John said.

"We're not supposed to be," I said.

We all walked to Austin's house which was a block away. The party was already in motion, but Austin still showed up at the door and greeted me with a hug.

"You made it," he said smiling.

"I told you I would," I said.

"Come on and enjoy yourselves," he said letting us in.

Sam and I weren't separated, not even once. Where ever she went I did too. Minutes later, Austin took hold of my hand and we went outside to walk around the block, Sam cam with Austin's friend Guillermo. The night air was fresh and I inhaled a big breath.

"You look beautiful tonight," Austin said pushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear.

"Thank you, you don't look to bad yourself," I said.

In fact, he didn't. He was wearing a crew neck dark gray sweater with a red and white plaid shirt peeking out of the sweater. and dark jeans slung low on his hips, and sneakers. His hair was a perfect mess as always.

"I love how you look in the moonlight," he said.

"Thank you," I said blushing.

"And I like how you blush," he continued.

"Oh gosh, Austin. Anymore complements and my face might catch on fire," I said. Did I really just say that? I mentally face palmed myself.

He laughed and took hold of my hand. The breezed picked up its speed and I began to shiver.

"Are you cold?" he asked.

"No I'm fine," I said rubbing my hands over my bare arms.

Austin pulled off his sweater and handed it to me. I pulled it on and he took my hand in his once again. Sam was being given a piggy-back ride by Guillermo. I smiled and Austin and I sat down on the curb. In the glow of the street lamp I saw a group of people and smoke around them. I saw Eli, and then I saw Sam walk over to him. Sam didn't look happy, and she began to yell at him. I stood up and Austin followed me.

"What the hell are you doing getting high in the middle of the street?" Sam yelled.

"Why are you with him?" Eli said gesturing towards Guillermo.

"He's my friend. What are you doing getting high with this slut?" Sam shot back.

I took hold of Sam's arm before she started swinging.

"Sam, let's go, leave him here," I whispered.

"Yeah, go," Eli said pushing us.

"Don't touch her," Austin said.

"No, You don't touch her," Eli said.

The group Eli was with had started to leave, and I tried to pull Sam away. I handed her to Guillermo, and walked towards Austin.

"Let's just go," I said to Austin.

"We're leaving, not him," Eli said taking my arm.

"Let me go. I can walk on my own. Besides I have to give Austin his sweater back," I said pulling my arm away from Eli.

Eli raised my arms over my head and roughly pulled the sweater off me, and threw it at Austin.

"She doesn't need your shit," Eli said.

"I'm sorry. Thank you," I said to Austin.

"Do you really have to go?" Austin asked.

"Yeah, I do," I said.

"Maybe we can go out some other time?" he asked.

I opened my mouth to respond, but Eli decided he would.

"No," he said taking my arm once more and pulling me away from Austin.

"Hey, what was that for?" I asked angrily.

"You don't know who Austin is. I do," he said.

"Well you had no right no answer for me," I said.

"No, but I did it anyways," he said walking to Sam who was saying goodbye to Guillermo.

We left and when we arrived at the house Sam and I headed to her room. I switched my party clothes for pink cotton shorts and a white tank top. I ran my hands through my hair, and crawled into bed next to Sam. She turned out the lights and we just laid there.

"Why is he like that?" Sam asked me bitterly.

"You should know. He is your brother," I said.

"Well I don't," she said softly.

"Let's not worry about him, let's go to sleep," I said.

"Okay. Goodnight Holly baby," she said sleepily.

"Goodnight, baby cakes," I said.

Soon we fell asleep, but I woke up at around 3 in the morning. I slipped out of bed and headed out the door to the bathroom in the hallway. A soft glow came from under Eli's bedroom door. I stopped in front of his door, wanting to demand what his problem was, but instead kept walking on to the bathroom. I opened the door and turned on the light and stood in front of the mirror. I filled a paper cup with water and took a drink. I spit out the water in the sink and threw out of the cup. I turned out the light and headed back into the hallway. I stopped in front of Eli's door again, and got the nerve to open the door. I stepped inside his room and closed the door behind me softly.

"What do you want Sydney?" he asked flipping through the channels on his TV.

"Holly, call me Holly. I can't sleep," I said.

"What do you want me to do about it, Holly," he said.

"Nothing," I said sliding down the door and sitting on the floor.

"Do you wanna watch TV or something?" he asked after a few minutes.

"Sure," I said walking to his bed and sitting on the end.

He threw me the remote and I started to flip through the channels, and settled on some random show on Disney Channel.

"You're such a kid," Eli said.

"You're only a year older than me," I said.

"Either way," he said.

We sat on his bed in silence and soon I laid myself across the end of the bed and minutes later I fell asleep. Hours later I was woken up to the stream of light coming through the window, and I flipped over to see that Eli's clock read that it was only 5 in the morning. I was moved to the top right side of Eli's bed while he was snoring on the left side. He flipped over and saw me there.

"Oh, hi," he said still half-asleep.

"Thanks for letting me stay here while I couldn't sleep," I said.

"Yeah, no problem," he said rubbing his eyes.

"I'm gonna go," I said getting up.

"Okay," he said scooting himself to the middle of the bed and closing his eyes once more.

I slid off the bed and made my way to the door. On the floor I saw Sabrina's black braided bracelet and I kicked in to the corner behind the door. I closed the door behind me and headed back into Sam's room. She was still fast asleep as I crawled back under the covers with her. I closed my eyes and tried to have a few more hours of sleep.
