4. Tears of Pain

I put the report card back in it's case and sprawled across my bed. My eyes were just about to drift off when I remembered something: Rascal.

Rascal is my adorable tuxedo cat. I love him so much!!!! I always sleep with him and I cant imagine sleeping without him. Talk about pain!!! He is always sleeping in his bed by the window in our basement. But how could I possibly get downstairs without getting caught by father? Oh well, I have to at least try.

I quietly crept down the stairs and peeked around the corner. Father was sitting in a rocking chair reading Art of  War. He was facing the opposite wall that I had to go to get Rascal so if I was quite enough I could go and get him. I slowly crept behind him until I finally reached Rascal. I scooped him up in my arms and headed back for the stairs. I was literally inches away when  I heard my father say,"I thought I sent you to your room." "You did, I'm going upstairs now." I hurry to the stairs but my father stops me."No, come here. We need to talk." And to think I was so close to escaping!!!

"Look dad, I'm sorry I lost the necklace. I'll pay for it the rest of my life. What can I d-" "Where is the necklace?"he spatters and looks completely calm "I don't know, I know, I'm so disappointed that I lo-" I try but he interrupts me "Oh, I think you know what I mean. I know you didn't lose that necklace." I'm confused. What is happening here? How does he know?" I don-" "Save it, Katarina. You are my child and I know you well. That necklace isn't 'gone' you hid it somewhere. Where is it?

How could he possibly know that. And to think all of these years I thought he was to wrapped up in his own life to care about about me. My mouth opens but then I quickly shut it. "So you aren't going to tell me? Well you are grounded until it is found. If you don't want to be punished just tell me where it is. Until then........" I stand up and race back towards the stairs but father stops me yet again. "Oh and don't think I'm not going to be searching the house for it. If it is found before you tell me where it is, then there will be.......consequences."

I raced up the stairs to my bedroom. I reclined in my bed, snuggling next to Rascal. What was I going to do if he ever found it? How will I manage? Tears were falling from my cheeks, and this time they were real.
