35. Answerless questions and quest

It was the third day I had been living in my house in Glasgow. It was almost dinnertime and as I waited for the pizza to be ready and I went to the living room. I turned on the TV and started switching the channels. I found the boys in an interview, so I decided to watch that.

Everything was usual, but then they asked Fruit loop about me. He was quiet, so Liam decided to answer saying that there had been some trouble and that they were taking some time.

I ran to get my phone, I had to call Fruit loop. These last days had been awful. And I didn't just miss him. I missed all the boys. He never answered; he never seemed to get any call. I tried again, but still nothing. I threw my phone into the couch as tears began falling down. Why had I even come here? Oh, right, because everyone who I loved turned out to be dead. My great life. I remembered when I was at the orphanage, when it all had seemed to end with just a few seconds and I thought my life was in slow motion, but with the boys, it was in fast forward. There was always a laugh. I missed them.

There was a break for the commercials, so we went to sit in some couches. I went to get my phone and saw that I had two missed calls from Cupcake, so I called her.

"Hello?" She said.

"You called. Is everything alright?"

"I really want to say yes, but I have to say no." What? Why can't she just say 'yes' or 'no' for once?

"I don't really understand."

"I made a mistake, Zayn." She said and she used my name again. This is important.

"What did you do?"

"I left. I left you."

"You never explained why you left." I said.

"Because all the people I love end up dead."

"That's not true-" I started but she cut me off.

"How can you say that? My entire family died, my friends forgot about me. They never went to visit me, not once in the three months that I was there!" I could hear she was crying.

"Uncle Si loves you."

"He's the only family I have left."

"No, he's not. You have four awesome brothers. And Paul."

"Then you're missing."

"I don't really know what to tell you right now."

"Don't say anything. Good luck in your interview. Tell the boys I say hi. Tell them I'm sorry. And tell Louis that I really appreciate what he did."

"I'll tell them. I wish you were here to tell them yourself."

"I wish I was there too. But I can't. Goodbye." She said and hung up. I felt the tears on my face. I tried to dry my face with my sleeves and went to the lads.

"What happened, Zayn?" Li asked.

"Cupcake says hi, that she is sorry. Lou, she says that she really appreciates all that you did."

"She didn't say anything else?" Ni asked. I shook my head. We went back to the interview, but I wasn't really listening.

"Zayn," the interviewer said, making me listen to that question. "You're not quite the same you were just before the commercials, what happened?"

What had happened? She called. And I still didn't understand why she had left.

"I'm not sure. I'm still thinking about it."

"Do you want to think out loud to help you clear your mind? Maybe we can help." She said as she shrugged. Yeah, like she saw going to make me spill what just happened.

"No, I'm fine." I just answered. The interviewer sighed and rolled her eyes. Maybe she didn't like me. I laughed in my head. Liam noticed and slapped the back of my head.

"Behave." He whispered.

"Cupcake would've laughed." I replied in a whisper.

After the interview, we were heading home. All kinds of questions were shot at me during the ride. "I can't understand a word any of you are saying." I said just as a fact and everyone stopped talking.

Li began to tell me how improper my answer had been and things like that.

After the pep talk Li gave me, I noticed Louis was quiet. "What are you thinking, Lou? You're never quiet, so something's going on."

"I know what you should do." He said with a fake doctor-like voice.

"What should I do?" I asked, thinking it was something really stupid.

"Oh, I don't know." He said, looking down. Really, boat boy?

"Are you serious?" I said as I glared at him.

"Maybe you should ask Jen what to do." He said, shrugging.

"Yeah!" I said sarcastically. "Why don't I just go to Glasgow and-" then it hit me. Louis wanted me to go to Glasgow. "I saw what you did there." I told him.
