After the books Divergent and Insurgent by Veronica Roth I have decided to write a third novel in the series, called Emergent.
Tris Prior and Tobias Eaton both belonged to a world where there were five different factions: Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Erudite and Dauntless. You could only choose one. Tris and Tobias are Divergent meaning that they belonged in more than one faction. Although now there is a war going on between the factions.
Tris is determined to find what is going on on the other side of the fence that has been guarded for many years but she was not prepared for what she finds.
Tris's older brother Caleb who betrayed her and her family is willing to do absolutely anything to gain control of all factions even if it means destroying them first.

1. chapter 1

I woke up from another nightmare, I was sweating but I still felt so cold. I thought about the video of my mother, telling me to seek what lies beyond the fence. Since watching that video in Erudite headquarters, Tobias (my boyfriend) and I decided that we would follow that advice. Slowly, I stood up and pulled back the old dusty curtains letting in the golden light of dawn. It was just getting quite light so I didn't bother trying to fall back asleep. Instead, I got dressed and walked downstairs into the kitchen, where  I saw Tobias studying a large map. He was so engrossed with the task at hand that he didn't even notice my arrival.

   "You're up early." I noted.

His head snapped towards me and he smiled "I thought it might be a good idea to have some knowledge on how we're going to get to the fence without getting killed in the process."

I nodded "Well you'd better hurry up since we'll be leaving in a few hours."

I poured myself a bowel of cereal and wolfed it down hungrily. My best friend Cristina appeared in the doorway. "So," she said,"when are we leaving?"

"In no more than two hours," I replied.

An hour later, we were ready to leave. I was feeling equally excited and nervous about our mission. Tobias grabbed the keys to the jeep and Cristina and I piled in after him. The car was freezing because it had been snowing last night, and, as Tobias started the car, I switched on the heat. We weren't far down the bumpy road before we heard the deafening roar of gunshots. I groaned, we'd never make it to the fence if we had to go through a battlefield. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw about ten soldiers on motorbikes speeding towards us. I gasped. Tobias noticed them too and put his foot down but the bikes were gaining on us. One of the soldiers started firing at us. The jeep lurched off the road and into a ditch. I screamed as my head slammed into the window and I blacked out. I gained consciousness just as the soldiers reached us but I couldn't think properly as there was an apocalyptic pain in my head. I could also feel blood trickling down my cheek. Tobias and Cristina tried to fight the soldiers but to no avail. I lay half conscious and then I blacked out again. I woke up bound and gagged in the back of a jeep. I could see Tobias and Cristina lying beside me. The journey seemed to go on forever but when we reached our destination I knew where we were.

"Welcome to Erudite," smirked one of the soldiers as we were dragged out of the jeep. We were taken into a large building where the soldiers left us, locking the doors after them. There was a small desk in the center of the room, and standing behind it, was Janine, the leader of Erudite whom I loathe, and my traitor of a brother, Caleb. My eyes narrowed at the sight of him. Janine smiled, or, what could have been a smile, if her eyes hadn't been full of pure hatred. I glared back.

"Tris, Tobias! What a lovely surprise. You've even brought a friend with you." said Janine smirking madly at us."As you probably have noticed, I've decided to have Caleb as my deputy. Isn't that right Cal?"

He nodded "Although," he said slowly, "what I really want is utter control, pure power."

He reached deep into his pocket and produced a small blade and began twirling it around with his fingertips. "Which is why you shouldn't take this personally Janine." And he plunged the blade into Janine's chest. She gasped as her face contorted up in pain and her eyes opened wide in shock and horror. She opened her mouth but, before any words came out, she crumpled to the floor, dead as a doornail. Caleb grinned, and sprinted towards a door I hadn't noticed.
