The Fire Games

One hundred years ago, there was a time known as the Dark Days, a war that began the Hunger Games. Twenty five years ago, a change happened. The Games turned around. Capitol children are Reaped now. There is now a new name for the Games. The Fire Games.

6. The Bloodbath

I am surrounded by rocks. It takes me a moment to realize why. I am on a mountain! In front of me is the Cornucopia. To all other sides, mountain. Mountain over here. Mountain over there. Mountain, mountain everywhere. (Did I mention I am on a mountain?)

I hear Fira Filckerman bellow over the loud speakers.

"Let the 25th Annual Fire Games begin!"

The sixty second timer begins. No one can move. If they do, they'll be blown sky-high. Whether or not Sabella knew this, was a mystery to me, but she tried to run away from the Cornucopia. Little bits of flesh, blood, and guts spray my face, although I'm the furthest from her.

     Time slowly passes.

     Then the gong sounds.

I run right towards the Cornucopia. I grab a backpack, then a knife that is thrown at me. It beats me how I caught it, mid-flight. Survival instincts, perhaps?

Once at the mouth, I realize this was stupid. I should have ran off, died without being bludgeoned. Why am I even fighting?

I see Primus lunge for a crossbow, but I snatch it first. Then, I run.

But Ysanne grabs my legs and trips me. She flips me over, and gets on top of me; I try to push her off, but she is too heavy. She is pulling her hand back, with a spear clutched, ready for a death blow, when a rock shoots her in the eye. The work of a well-aimed slingshot.

She is shocked, but then goes right back to me. Another rock takes out her left eyeball, leaving  her blind. She is raging, swinging the spear around. There are several near misses. But she stabs the spear into my palm, then my wrist, then my forearm, leaving my left arm injured and immobile.

My blood is pouring out, as is Ysanne's. But a kid, I think named Kade, kicks her off me, and steps on her skull. He pulls the spear out my arm, throws it carelessly, then disappears.

I get up, and run away, dodging the bodies of Primus and Fulvia. I know the bloodbath is over when I hear five cannons. One for Sabella, one for Ysanne, another for Primus, a cannon for Fulvia, and one last shot for a mystery. I hope it's not Kade. Not that I care.

The blood from my arm is draining me. I sit down. I open my pack to find a water flask, full to the brim. There is a blanket, a container of hand sanitizer, matches, and a bag of fruits and nuts. Inside is also ammo for my crossbow. I guess I'm luckier than I thought. Then again, look where I am.

The blood from my wounds is making me woozy. But I get up anyway, to find shelter. I walk for a while, leaving a crimson red trail behind. Blood drip drip dripping.

I've lost too much. I pass out, tumbling down the rocky mountain.
