1. The Only Direction Is Down

"Hello?" I answered my phone from the unknown caller.

"Hi, is this...Er...Paul Higgins?" I heard papers rustling from the other line.

"Yes, and who is this?" I questioned.

"Hi, my name is John McGarry and I am Mrs. Margaret Pointe's lawyer. Have you heard of Mrs. Pointe?" He questioned.

I racked my brain, trying to remember the name. It sounded awfully familiar but I couldn't put a face to the name so I decided to ask who it was.

"Mrs. Pointe is the mother of a girl named Eloise Point who is 17 years old. She currently lives in Sacramento, California, in the US. She is-or was-living with her grandmother Isabelle."

I stopped him right there, "Okay Mr. McGarry I'm kind of in the middle of something and I would like to know how all of this pertains to me?" The boys of One Direction were starting to get all worked up as they were waiting for me to take them in for their interview.

"Well Mr. Higgins, you see, Eloise's grandmother has just passed away. She was only living with her because her mother was in a car crash when Eloise was ten and didn't make it. Now Eloise has no blood relatives except for you."

"Hold up one second, don't you think I would have known if I was related somehow to these people?"

"I have Eloise's birth certificate right in front of me right now and it has you listed as the father. Since Ms. Eloise doesn't turn 18 for a few months now, she has to either be taken in by an orphanage or by any remaining blood relative, which would be you."

My mouth dropped. How could I have never even heard of my own 17 year old daughter? 17 years ago...oh no. The memories started flooding back to me of all the one night stands that I had during my rough patch. "Are you sure the girl is mine," I asked, hopeful for one last exit.

"Well the only way to know for sure would be to take a blood test where both of you are present. Would you like me to arrange that?"

"No, no." I replied. I knew that if I made her do that it would seem like I didn't want her.

"Okay, well currently Ms. Eloise is with social services so we would need to know a decision as soon as possible."

"I'll take her," I replied. I couldn't just let my own daughter go on without a family. "When will she be coming?"

"She will be arriving in three days time, hopefully that will be enough time for you to make sleeping and housing arrangements and prepare to be a father."

"Thank you...Goodbye." I let out as I hung up. I excused myself to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.

I'm going to be a father.
