In Our Hearts

I wrote this a few days after my mother died. I couldn't read it for several years, and even now after more than thirty years I still find it difficult.

1. In Our Hearts

   In Our Hearts

   ''In our hearts always''

Black ink on the white card

Lost in a sea of leaves and petals,

Golden flowers grown in the golden summer

When we walked in the woods

   And talked of next year,

When we sat in the garden

   Sipping afternoon tea

Turning the talk from doctors and death

To flowers  glinting gold by the parched grass.

In the autumn we sat by her bed

And talked of the weather, grandchildren and flowers,

And we watched her die slowly with the dying year.

We wrote with black ink on the white card provided

   ''In our hearts always''
