The Ultimate Talent Show

Set 300 years in the future, planet Earth is wrecked. With basic supplies long gone, things are getting desperate. The human race is taking drastic measures to preserve the once-powerful species. But when scientists create an emergency escape shuttle, things take a turn for the worse- if that's possible...

7. The view from the judges' panel

The talent show had caused quite a stir in the general public. The amount of applicants streaming through the doors daily showed just how desperate people were to show off their talents-even if they didn't possess any. Hours of talentless displays had been endured by the three judges. Of the 70,000 contestants in the first three weeks of the contest, only 400 had recieved the news they longed to hear.

So when George Limewall, 15 from London walked onto the stage, the exasperated judges were not expecting anything special. In fact, two of the judges barely looked up from their slouched positions as George nervously cleared his throat to get their attention. Three pairs of eyes settled on him, one of which looked back down almost immediately.

George could barely make out the judges faces, blinding stage lights blocking anything from arms length from his view. Probably a good thing actually, as the penetrating stares of the remaining two judges would probably have knocked the little confidence he had.

"So," a female voice echoed from behind the lights. "What's your name?" Silence. The oppurtunity George had to save his family, and he couldn't even say his name.

"Stay calm." A voice in his head said. "Stay calm and think of Sarah."

"My name is George." Despite the noticeable tremble in his voice, hearing it aloud gave him a burst of confidence.

"Ok George. Why are you here, and what are you going to do for us today?" The woman asked.

"I'm here the same reason as everyone else- to get another shot at life."

"And how exactly are you going to do that?" A slurred male voice questioned. Slightly shaken at his sudden confrontation, George continued.

"I think I could make quite a good electrician, so I'm going to show you by controlling these lights with this." The judges noticed the box in his hand as he raised it slightly.

"Well, by all means, go ahead." The slurred voiced said, with a hint of sarcasm. Hands trembling, George rested the box on the floor and knelt down beside it. Hands shaking, he began to fiddle with the wires. After nearly three minutes, an uneasy laugh rose from the judges.

"I can do it, really." George stammered desperately. "I can, I swear."

"Look, this is just a waste of time. We have lots of other people to see, so-" The judge was cut off by a small flickering of the stage lights. All three judges fell silent as all the lights turned on and off slower. Turning off the stage lights, George looked hopefully up at the woman in the middle. She smiled back.
