The Ultimate Talent Show

Set 300 years in the future, planet Earth is wrecked. With basic supplies long gone, things are getting desperate. The human race is taking drastic measures to preserve the once-powerful species. But when scientists create an emergency escape shuttle, things take a turn for the worse- if that's possible...

8. Post

Nearly two weeks had passed, with no news of my audition. After the first few days, I began to lose hope. By the end of the first week, I was getting desperate. The government were abandoning us completely. If I didn't get chosen, mum and Sarah would be left with me, on this polluted planet, with dwindling food electricity and water supplies. The government were going to turn everything off, leaving us to die.

Finally, thirteen days after my audition, a single letter fell through the letter box, landing gently on the worn, faded welcome mat. The first letter to go through that letter box in almost three years. Picking it up, I read my name in neat, spiralling letters on the envelope. As I slid my thumb under the fold, my hands began to shake. My family's life was resting on the contents of this envelope. After brief reflection, I ripped open the letter, discarding the envelope on the floor. Unfolding the letter, I began to read.

Dear George,

Thank you very much for your audition. It has been reviewed by a panel of expert judges, and they have come to the conclusion that you are to be granted up to six places on the 'pod'. Please fill out the form enclosed with the details of the people you wish to take with you, and return to the address as stated on the form.

Congratulations, and we await your letter by no later than the 15th May.

Again, well done, and we are looking forward to making your acquaintance on the day of the launch. Good luck in beginning your new life.

Your sincerely,

Margaret Lioney

Head Judge of Placement Management

I read the letter a second time, then a third to be sure. After reading it slowly for a final fourth time, I dropped it on the envelope and walked slowly over to Sarah's room. I rapped gently on the door, before opening it a crack.

"Sarah?" She didn't respond. I walked into the room, and drew up a chair next to her. "Sarah." I whispered in a sing song voice, twisting her hair round my finger. "Sarah, we're going to Venus. We are going to start a new life. It will be much better. We can get help for you, make you better." Then I noticed she wasn't moving at all. I didn't need to search for her pulse to know I was too late.
