The Ultimate Talent Show

Set 300 years in the future, planet Earth is wrecked. With basic supplies long gone, things are getting desperate. The human race is taking drastic measures to preserve the once-powerful species. But when scientists create an emergency escape shuttle, things take a turn for the worse- if that's possible...

6. My Talent

I sat at the dining table, a blank piece of paper staring up at me. What talents did I have? Something I could use to get out of here. Something capable of taking Sarah with me.

A dim light bulb hung from a thin wire above me, swinging gently as it lit up the thick layer of dust and mould round the room. The swinging of the light cast eerie shadows on the dirty walls.

"Please don't go out." I whispered as the bulb flickered, plunging me into an all too familiar darkness. "Please." My mind raced through every possible 'talent'. I had never even seen a bow and arrow, let alone killed an animal with one, so a hunter was out of the question. The sight of blood made my head reel- I would make an appalling doctor. The state of our table blatantly told me I was no carpenter, and the fact that our water supply was long since gone gave me no hope in the art of plumbing.

The only sound apart from my own thoughts was the creaking of the light as it swayed. Flickering for a final time, the bulb went out. Wearily standing up, I fumbled over to the drawer with the spare light bulb. My hand found the handle in the near-pitch black, wrenching it open. My hand ran over the miscellaneous objects nestling in the drawers until the smooth glass of the bulb came into contact with my fingertips. Grabbing the three-legged stool by the cupboard, I positioned it under the old bulb and steadied it as I stepped on.

By sense of touch alone, I managed to unscrew the bulb and put the new one in it's place. As I flicked the light switch back on, the idea of my possible talent came to me. I had rewired our house when the electricity had gone down the year before; could an electrician be a potential ticket to Venus? Surely they would need people capable of giving the new planet light and energy. Even if they didn't, it would be worth a shot.
