9. Stomach Aches

3 weeks after the whole Ace/Chase fight scenario and things were almost back to normal. The middle of the term was taking its toll on Scarlett. Homework, tests and her inexplicable love for her friend were killing her slowly.

She arrived at school, yawning and stretching widely. School had most definitely taken over her life these days, leaving sleep as just a mere daydream. Chase walked up to her as he walked into the gates, and her stomach exploded with butterflies. Now she could understand this was petty, but over the weeks, she had grown so close to Chase, but she avoided admitting it to herself because she thought herself as quite a pitiful girl falling for her two best friends.

"Heyyyyy" he said, grinning widely and stretching the 'ey' bit on the 'hey' for a long time. Scarlett laughed because just seeing him smile made her so happy, even though she was lacking sleep and had a ton of homework to do later.

They both walked off to their lessons together, chatting and laughing freely, as the dull winds blew around them.

"Where's Ace then?" Scarlett asked after the good conversation started breaking up.

"I don't know. He should be here today." Chase all of a sudden looked quite uncomfortable. He didn't like Scarlett to talk about him because he knew she liked him but he wished she didn't for two reasons: a) The whole aim of the plan is to trick her into trusting him and b) Chase kind of liked her too and wished there wasn't competition between Ace.

Scarlett mumbled a quick "okay." under her breath because she knew that for some reason he didn't want her to talk about Ace.

They both approached the classroom slowly, an awkward silence hanging in the air, as Scarlett mentally congratulated herself on being so stupid and talking about Ace.

Suddenly, Chase pulled her back slightly and both hands on shoulders and turned her around fluidly. "Look, I need to kind of tell you something..." He started, full of confidence, but then trailed off slightly, losing the hope he had gathered.

Scarlett smiled at him nervously, hoping to inject some courage back into him. "Yeah?"

"Uhm. Well, I," He spluttered, "Okay look, I-"

"Woo! Hi guys!" Ace zoomed past them, jumping on to the banister of some stairs and sliding down childishly.

Scarlett forgot about Chase. "What the hell are you doing?!" She shouted, laughter evident in her voice.

"Having fun!" He screamed back, "Come try it!" Scarlett giggled and shook her head mockingly at him.

"Silly, silly Ace. Will you never learn?" She said, before she too sprinted towards the banister, and slid down with ease, jumping up and out the door Ace had gone.

Chase frowned to himself, and stared at the window, through which he could faintly see  his own reflection. "What does he have that I don't?" He muttered lightly, deciding to not tell Scarlett what he really had for her.

"I probably don't deserve her anyways." He said, his voice cracking, as he walked to the lesson alone
