8. A New Mountain To Cross?

They walked slowly to their next lesson together, reminiscing about their times as best friends which felt like such a long time ago for Scarlett. They got on to the topic of Ace and what their agreement was. Scarlett hadn't asked about that immediately as they left the scene because she knew that sometimes people weren't willing to share their secrets and she was no one to pry into someone's life.

"The thing is..." Chase spoke slowly, clearly to avoid saying something he'd regret. He may be completely against what Ace was saying, but he was still his best friend and he knew he would definitely not let Ace do that to her.

"Ace has a few problems."

"What kind of problems?" Scarlett questioned, a little scared of what was to come.

"Well. Let me put this in simple terms," He suggested, "He had this love before, for a thing, but this thing didn't want him. So he let this thing go. But later, he returned and the thing wanted him. So he figured he'd gain the trust of this thing and then later break this thing's heart..." He trailed off, a little uncertain whether he had revealed too much.

"I see." Scarlett said thoughtfully, thinking what this 'thing' could be.

"Yeah..." Chase trailed awkwardly.

"Cool, I guess." Scarlett concluded to Chase, pretending it was the end of the matter, but the 'thing' running circles in her mind.

Chase eyed her for a second. He knew Scarlett and knew that she was not one to let go of this so easily, but let it slide anyways, to avoid causing a scene.

"So how come you weren't in school for the morning?" Scarlett asked, the question having poked her mind repeatedly before.

"Oh, well I overslept." He said with a sheepish grin.

Scarlett burst into laughter for the first time in a long time and shook her head in mock disappointment. "What are we going to do with you Chase?" Chase stood there, mesmerized for a second in the beauty of Scarlett as her head swung back and her almost perfect teeth revealed.

Wait what? Chase reeled back in shock as he realised what he had just thought. This couldn't possibly be true- he didn't have a crush on Scarlett! He couldn't! It would jeopardize their friendship.

Scarlett had now noticed something was wrong with Chase and frowned. "What's wrong? Are you okay?" She asked, a little alert and nervous.

Chase pulled himself out of his thoughts and vaguely nodded at Scarlett. "I'm fine, but hey, I have to go. Okay, see you later, bye!" He hadn't even given her a chance to say bye as he zoomed down the corridor, surprised about his new-found feelings for this girl.

Scarlett shook it off as tiredness, though something haunted her thoughts, as she went to her next lesson.

If that was the first day of school, she thought dully, what was the second day going to be like?
