12. Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Niall and i sat in silence as we drove down the road. I was a little too mad to talk and he looked a little too confused to talk. So, we stayed in silence as I fumed.

As much as I love my mum, we get into too much arguments and I’m always the one to storm out in the end. Ever since we moved towns, she’s been breathing down my neck for every little action I do. Don’t you have homework to do? Where are you going? Are you going to school? Did you skip any classes? Why are you on your phone? Why are you doing this? Why are you doing that? It just frustrates me that she has to know every little detail.

That’s one thing. But another thing was assuming that Niall was a bad guy? Are you serious? She shouldn’t go around judging people. She was probably just stereotyping all guys to be bad guys.

Then she goes and calls me a slut. Well, indirectly of course. But what kind of mother would do that to their child!? That was rude and insulting. Is that what she really thinks of me? A whore that sleeps with every guy she sees. I don’t do that. I’ve only ever slept with one guy and it was a mistake.

After a few minutes of cooling down I sighed and looked out the window. My eyebrows furrowed when I looked at the unfamiliar scenery flying past. I sat up straighter in the seat and tried to get a better view but Niall was driving a little too fast for me to see.

“Where are we going?” I asked him, still looking out the window.

“A place where you will most definitely relax and forget about what just happened.” Niall answered, slowing down the car and turning on to a dirt road.

I sat in silence as we drove down the dark road, the rocks crunching under the tires. We pulled up to a building after a few metres. There were a few cars parked outside on the dirt. The building looked gray under the setting sun. Its windows were high up on the walls and it was fully made of cement. The door was dark tinted glass and there was no way seeing through it.

I got out once Niall parked the car, my eyes trained on the building before me. Then I said, “Niall, if we’re at one of your gang meetings, you’re dead.”

He chuckled before throwing an arm around my shoulders and moving me towards the door. “Wouldn’t give you the satisfaction, sweetheart.”

He let go of me and pushed the dark glass door open. We didn’t get two steps in before someone stopped us. He was at least in his late twenties. He would’ve been more scarier if it wasn’t for his bright smile and happy blue eyes. He was a little attractive but his buff arms flexed every time he moved them making him look bigger.

“Niall, man! I haven’t seen you here for a while.” He greeted Niall with a hand. Niall took it and did the shoulder bump thing that guys always did.

“Yeah, I know.” Niall laughed. “Mick, this is Georgia. Georgia, this is Mick.”

Mick held out his hand and I took it, shaking it with a pleasant smile on my face. He gave me a kind smile before turning around to face Niall. “Everything’s still the same so just go ahead.” He gestured to the black curtain to the side.

Niall nodded and waved before taking me through the black curtain.

To be honest, I was expecting some kind of club. A strip club, a bar, whatever. I expected alcohol, loud music and some dancing. But what I saw when i walked in wasn’t what I was expecting.

We were at an arcade. Yes, the place with video games, and tickets and prizes for the tickets and all that. There were mostly teenagers since the place was more of a hidden place and not at all recommended for kids at first look.

“An arcade?” I asked Niall, shocked.

“Of course, what did you think i’d take you to?” He laughed but he didn’t let me have time to answer his question. He just grabbed my hand and pulled me to the air hockey table.

“Come on, I want to beat your ass.” Niall said, sliding me one of the mallets. I caught it and sent him a smirk.

“What happened to chivalry?” I said, watching him place the puck in front of his mallet.

“Haven’t you heard, sweetheart?” He smirked and leaned over the railing in a stance, “chivalry’s dead.”

He sent the puck my way with a hard hit and I hit it out of my slot back to him. We continued to play until I finally won. 10-9. I smirked when we walked away from the table.

“In your face, bitch!” I laughed.

“Whatever, I let you win.” He contradicted. “It’s called being chivalrous.”

“Oh, yeah,” I smirked, “what happened to chivalry being dead?”

He grinned. “I brought it back to life.”

He took my hand and pulled me to the cars. “Now, this I will definitely beat you in.”

“Okay, sweetheart. But if I win don’t go crying.” I joked and sat down in one of the seats with him on the other side of me.

We continued to banter all night, moving from station to station. We versed each other in almost every game. We went into the photo booths at which I kept the photos we took. By the time we walked out, laughing our heads off, it was 9:00 and I was starving.

“You hungry?” He asked once we got into the car. I nodded my head and he pulled out of the place and drove down the road.

He pulled up at a diner on a deserted road. There were a few shops and cafes on this road but they were all closed. Niall pulled me into a diner called “In The Middle” and sat me down at one of the booths next to the wall.

It was a cute place and it was rather empty. There were hardly anyone. The floor was tiled and white. The booths had red leather and the tables were gray. There were chairs seated next to the window which were made out of wood. There were stools on the counter and they were the same colour as the booth seats.

A waitress in her 40s came out to us once we were settled and smiled. “Niall, you haven’t been here for a while. I missed you.”

Niall smiled. “I sure missed you too, Bertha.”

“Ah, I see you’ve brought a girl with you.” She winked at me. “Replaced me already?” She teased.

“Of course not, Berth. You’ll always be my favourite.” He grinned.

“Now, now Niall. Remember, I’m like 20 years older than you.” She laughed.

“It’s 25 but I don’t care.” He winked. “Bertha, this is Georgia. Georgia, meet the best pancake maker in town.”

“Hi, Bertha.” I greeted her with a slight laugh and a hand out. She gave me a motherly smile and gripped my hand.

“Hi there Georgia.” She greeted me back. “So Niall, the usual? And what about you, dear?”

“Yes, I’ll have the usual.” Niall said.

“If Niall says you’re the best pancake maker in town, i’ll have the blueberry pancake short stack with vanilla ice cream on the side.” I told her.

“Coming right up, dears!” She grinned and turned to go to the kitchen.

I turned to Niall and he gave me a small smile. “So what’s in your usual?”

“A short stack with extra syrup and a large chocolate milkshake.” He answered.

I giggled. “That is such a childish thing to order.”

“Ah, but it’s Bertha’s pancakes.” He winked.

“So, what’s the story here?” I asked, putting my elbows on the table and resting my chin on my interlaced fingers.

“What do you mean?” He sounded a little confused.

“Like why do you come here? When did you start coming here? and all that.” I said, waving my hand carelessly.

“Well, I started coming here when I was 15. That was when I first got into the gang and I was just tired of everything. It was hard to sleep at night when you know that you have a lot of enemies who know where you live. So I started wondering around in the middle of the night.

I found this place on one of my nightly expeditions and I liked it. I started coming here every night for the past three years. Bertha helped me a lot when my mum died.” He answered.

“Oh.” I said, “what about the arcade?”

“I’ve been going there since I was little. My mum took me there all the time up until I was 12. That was when i started getting into the whole adult gang stuff and i started following my dad around. But I still go every now and then. The last time i went was a few months ago.”

Bertha came up to us with a tray. It had both our meals on it. “Here you go.” She grinned and placed the tray on the edge of the table and handed our plates over.

“Thanks Bertha. Looks amazing!” I said politely as I looked down at my 2-pancake short stack and creamy vanilla ice cream in a bowl.

“Thanks, dear.” She smiled. “Go on, try it.”

I took my knife and fork and cut a small piece and popped it into my mouth. My taste buds exploded. My eyes widened. I never knew pancakes could ever taste this good! I mean, i was too keen on pancakes but this totally turned me back on on pancakes. It was the right kind of flavour and it was just beautiful.

“Nothing like watching someone try their first Bertha Pancake.” Niall grinned.

I put another piece in my mouth and moaned, “Whatever you put in this, keep putting it in. My god, it’s amazing!”

She chuckled. “Sure, dear. I’ll leave you guys to it.” She walked away.

“This is like an orgasm in my mouth.” I moaned again, putting another piece in my mouth.

“Shh, I’m eating.” Niall said and put a massive piece in his mouth.

We ate in silence, having our shares in moans. I kept looking over at him and just mouthing wow whenever I can. It was that good.

When we finished our pancakes (which was in less than 5 minutes, yes that was how amazing it was) I moved on to my sort of melting ice cream and he moved on to his milkshake. After a moment of silence, Niall looked up to me and opened his mouth as if he was going to say something but then he closed it.

“Well?” I inquired, “spit it out.”

“Wait, I’m trying to word this in a way that you won’t get offended.” He said.

I rolled my eyes. “Just say it.” I demanded.

“Why was your mum acting like a-” He started.

“-a raving bitch?” I finished for him.

“I was going to say unpleasant woman but that works.” Niall shrugged.

I laughed a bit then said, “she’s been like that ever since she found out about me getting arrested and stuff. We used to be heaps close and she treated me like an angel. Now she just thinks I’m a devil’s spawn. Plus it wasn’t even that bad, al I did was stole a few things from shops and got into fights with some people but that’s it. And I only got arrested like 5 or 6 times.

Okay, maybe 10 but still, it’s not that bad if you really think about it. But it is sort of my fault. I’m being a bitch to her too. Like, i ignore her and I snap at her a lot more than I usually do and I always call things on her whenever argue. But that’s the thing. I moved towns to get away from all that. Ventor was just a bad place, Bane is so much more better.

I don’t want to screw up here. I don’t want to have a criminal record here. I don’t want to be like I was in Ventor here. I just want to be normal again.”

“You won’t be like you were in Ventor. You’re such a good person, Georgia. You won’t screw up.” He murmured, covering my hands with his. “I won’t let you screw up.”

I smiled at him and turned my hands over so that my palms were touching his. I wrapped my hands around his hands and gave them a squeeze. “Thanks, Niall.”

He grinned then got out of the booth and grabbed my hand. “Let’s go, Georgia. Your mother hates me enough as it is, I don’t want her hating me even more because I didn’t bring you home earlier. It’s 11 and it’s a school night.”

“I don’t see why you bother. She already hates you, it won’t hurt letting her hate you even more.” I joked.

“Ah, but sweetheart remember she’ll be seeing me a lot more. It’ll be nice for her to be a little less hostile.” He winked.

“She’s always hostile.” I whined as I got into the car.

“And I feel sorry for you.” He joked and sped away from the diner after waving to the window where Bertha was.

“Whatever, let’s go back home to the monster and my dad.” I huffed.
